    Abstract
This paper proposes a new control strategy for the islanded operation of a multi-bus medium voltage (MV) microgrid. The microgrid consists of several dispatchable electronically-coupled distributed generation (DG) units. Each DG unit supplies a local load which can be unbalanced due to the inclusion of single-phase loads. The proposed control strategy of each DG comprises a proportional resonance (PR) controller with an adjustable resonance frequency, a droop control strategy, and a negative-sequence impedance controller (NSIC). The PR and droop controllers are, respectively, used to regulate the load voltage and share the average power components among the DG units. The NSIC is used to...

    Abstract
This paper presents an effective control strategy for autonomous operation of a multi-bus medium voltage (MV) microgrid (MG) consisting of several dispatchable distributed generation (DG) units. Each electronically-coupled DG unit supplies the loads which can be unbalanced due to the inclusion of single-phase loads. The proportional resonance (PR) and droop controllers are, respectively, used to regulate the load voltage and share the average powers among the DG units. The virtual negative-sequence impedance controller (VNSIC) is proposed to effectively compensate the negative-sequence currents of the unbalanced loads. Moreover, the VNSIC minimizes the negative-sequence currents in the MV...

    Abstract
Control strategies of a microgrid which includes both synchronous generators and converter-based distribution generation (DG) units must be designed such that effective operation of the microgrid is achieved. The main objective of this paper is to develop a high performance control strategy for an islanded medium voltage (MV) microgrid consisting of inverter and non-inverter interfaced DG units. A new control method for the synchronous generator in an islanded microgrid is proposed based on a virtual droop scheme. The proposed strategy can effectively manage the real and reactive powers of the microgrid among the inverter and non-inverter based DG units. The steady state and dynamic...

    Abstract
This paper presents a novel flexible control strategy for Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC), which achieves more flexibility in compensation of power quality disturbances as compared to the existing methods. The proposed control strategy provides priority-based compensation as well as full and standard-based compensation considering the rating of series and shunt parts of a UPQC. The priority-based compensation is done based on the compensation priority among different power quality disturbances. In this control strategy, an on-line estimation of different voltage and current disturbances is required. For this purpose, a Unified Adaptive Power Quality Estimator (UAPQE) has been...

Active power management of multihybrid fuel cell/supercapacitor power conversion system in a medium voltage microgrid

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 3, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 1903-1910 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Ghazanfari, A ; Hamzeh, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Karimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper proposes a hierarchical active power management strategy for a medium voltage (MV) islanded microgrid including a multihybrid power conversion system (MHPCS). To guarantee excellent power management, a modular power conversion system is realized by parallel connection of small MHPCS units. The hybrid system includes fuel cells (FC) as main and supercapacitors (SC) as complementary power sources. The SC energy storage compensates the slow transient response of the FC stack and supports the FC to meet the grid power demand. The proposed control strategy of the MHPCS comprises three control loops; dc-link voltage controller, power management controller, and load current sharing...

A new control method of three-phase PMSG wind turbine connected to single-phase network through a Back-to-Back converter

    , Article Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference, APPEEC ; 2011 ; 21574839 (ISSN) ; 9781424462551 (ISBN) Shamsnia, A ; Hojabri, H ; Mokhtari, H ; Chang, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed to improve the performance of a wind generator system composed of a three-phase PMSG and a Back-to-Back three-phase to single-phase converter. With the use of the large inductance of the synchronous generator, the control method minimizes the generator torque ripple when the system supplies a single-phase load. The problem arises from the fact that the instantaneous power of a single-phase load is pulsating at the double of the system frequency. This paper tries to minimize the effect of this pulsating power on the PMSG torque without using a large capacitor on the DC link. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. ©...

    Abstract
This paper presents a control strategy for an islanded medium voltage microgrid to coordinate hybrid power source (HPS) units and to control interfaced multilevel inverters under unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions. The proposed HPS systems are connected to the loads through a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter. The CHB multilevel inverters increase the output voltage level and enhance power quality. The HPS employs fuel cell (FC) and photovoltaic sources as the main and supercapacitors as the complementary power sources. Fast transient response, high performance, high power density, and low FC fuel consumption are the main advantages of the proposed HPS system. The proposed...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new unified power-quality conditioning system (MC-UPQC), capable of simultaneous compensation for voltage and current in multibus/multifeeder systems. In this configuration, one shunt voltage-source converter (shunt VSC) and two or more series VSCs exist. The system can be applied to adjacent feeders to compensate for supply-voltage and load current imperfections on the main feeder and full compensation of supply-voltage imperfections on the other feeders. In the proposed configuration, all converters are connected back to back on the dc side and share a common dc-link capacitor. Therefore, power can be transferred from one feeder to adjacent feeders to compensate for...

A decentralized control method for a low-voltage dc microgrid

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion ; Vol. 29, issue. 4 , Dec , 2014 , p. 793-801 ; 08858969 Khorsandi, A ; Ashourloo, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
DC microgrids (DC-MGs) are becoming popular as an effective means to integrate various renewable energy resources. Conventionally, the droop control is adopted as a decentralized control strategy for proper power sharing without using any communication link. However, the conventional droop control often deteriorates due to the effects of unequal line resistances. In this paper, a control strategy is proposed for a DC-MG to achieve perfect power sharing considering the effects of line resistances. The DC-MG under study consists of a photovoltaic system, two energy storage systems, a grid-connected converter system, and dc loads. The control strategy of the converters is addressed under...

An adaptive droop control method for low voltage DC microgrids

    , Article PEDSTC 2014 - 5th Annual International Power Electronics, Drive Systems and Technologies Conference ; December , 2014 , p. 84-89 Khorsandi, A ; Ashourloo, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of technology

    Abstract
DC microgrids (MGs) are becoming popular as effective means to integrate different energy resources. Conventionally, the droop control is adopted as a decentralized control method for power sharing in DC MGs. However, current sharing accuracy or voltage regulation deteriorates due to the effects of line impedances. In this paper, a new adaptive control strategy is proposed for DC MGs. In low load conditions, the output currents of the DGs are far from their maximum acceptable limits. Therefore, current sharing accuracy is not important. As load increases, the output currents of the DGs approach their maximum acceptable limits. Therefore, at high load conditions, accurate current sharing is...

Reactive compensation investigation of TSC systems based on different power factor definitions

    , Article IECON Proceedings (Industrial Electronics Conference) ; 2012 , Pages 1393-1398 ; 9781467324212 (ISBN) Ebrahimi, S ; Najmi, V ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Accurate power factor definitions are of great importance for industries due to the fact that they affect the billing strategy. They also considerably affect the generation and distribution losses of the power system. At the moment, there are some ambiguities in power definitions to be used for this purpose. In recent years, because of a rapid growth in industry and the use of variable loads such as electrical furnaces and variable speed motors, there is a need for fast compensators that are capable of tracking load changes. One of these facilities is TSC, a capacitor bank that is controlled by static switches (thyristors). In this paper, the performance of these compensators in power factor...

    Abstract
High penetration of constant-power loads (CPL) in dc microgrids may cause a destabilizing effect on the system that can lead to severe voltage oscillations. This paper addresses stability problems of the CPLs and proposes a simple active damping technique to damp the oscillations caused by CPLs. The particle swarm optimization algorithm has been used to find the best values of the parameters of the proposed active damper to achieve maximum damping of the oscillations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by simulations

    Abstract
Harmonic producing loads, which are increasingly used in industries, cause power quality problems as well as increase in system losses. To deal with the problems associated with harmonics and to reduce their effects on power networks, study of the effects of non-linear loads on distribution networks is essential. In this paper, the non-linear loads of residential consumers are modeled and simulated. A typical residential consumer and a simplified short feeder are simulated in order to make an estimation of the power and energy losses and their corresponding costs. The simulations are verified using practical measurements from real customers. ©2013 IEEE

    Abstract
This paper depicts a new configuration for modular hybrid power conversion systems, namely, multi-hybrid generation system (MHGS), and parallel connection at the output, such that the converter of each unit shares the load current equally. This is a significant step towards realizing a modular power conversion system architecture, where smaller units can be connected in any series/parallel grouping to realize any required unit specifications. The supercapacitor (SC) as a complementary source is used to compensate for the slow transient response of the fuel cell (FC) as a main power source. It assists the FC to meet the grid power demand in order to achieve a better performance and dynamic...

    Abstract
Modeling of hybrid systems using mixed logical dynamical (MLD) systems is an art. The MLD framework often introduces numerous constraints and auxiliary binary and continuous variables, which, in turn, increase the computational complexity of the optimization problems. This paper presents an automaton-based realization for discrete-time hybrid automaton (DHA) with both controlled and uncontrolled switching phenomena by which it is attempted to develop efficient translation techniques to MLD systems and reduce the total number of decision variables in the MLD model. Based on this DHA model, a modified version of MLD systems, which is called extended MLD (EMLD) is formally defined and...

    Abstract
Damping characteristics of three-layered sandwich cylindrical shells with the focus on mode switching phenomenon are investigated in the present study. All layers of the sandwich cylinder are formulated based on the first-order shear deformation theory. Considering the von Karman strain displacement relations, the nonlinear equations of motion are derived through Hamilton’s principle. By separating the displacement components into previbration and vibration states and substituting in the obtained nonlinear equations of motion, the previbration equilibrium equations and vibration equations of motion are obtained. The acquired equations are solved by applying the generalized differential...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new compensating system, which consists of a shunt active filter and passive components for mitigating voltage and current disturbances arising from an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). A novel control strategy is presented for the shunt active filter. An extended method based on instantaneous power theory in a rotating reference frame is developed for extraction of compensating signals. Since voltages at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) contain low frequency interharmonics, conventional methods cannot be used for dc voltage regulation. Therefore, a new method is introduced for this purpose. The passive components limit the fast variations of load currents and mitigate...

    Abstract
Supply Chain (SC) coordination, quality requirements, and environmental issues are the main areas of interest within the field of inventory management. Few studies have integrated these concepts into an inventory problem despite its overwhelming necessity. In this direction, this paper deals with a vendor-buyer SC under the Vendor-Managed Inventory with Consignment Stock (VMI-CS) agreement. According to the agreement, the vendor bears the buyer's financial holding cost in return for the storage of products in the buyer's warehouse. Further, each shipment involves a random fraction of repairable items, which need to be withdrawn from the inventory system. Unlike the existing literature, when...
