Abstract
Long term evolution (LTE)-advanced aims the peak data rates in excess of 3 Gbps for the next generation wireless communication systems. Turbo codes, the specified channel coding scheme in LTE, suffers from a low-decoding throughput due to its iterative decoding algorithm. One efficient approach to achieve a promising throughput is to use multiple Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) cores in parallel, resulting in a large area overhead, a big drawback. The scaled Max-log MAP algorithm is a common approach to implement the MAP algorithm due to its efficient architecture with its acceptable performance. Although many works have been reported to reduce the area of the MAP unit, an efficient VLSI...

Abstract
Long-term evolution (LTE) is aimed to achieve the peak data rates in excess of 300 Mb/s for the next-generation wireless communication systems. Turbo codes, the specified channel-coding scheme in LTE, suffer from a low-decoding throughput due to its iterative decoding algorithm. One efficient approach to achieve a promising throughput is to use multiple maximum a posteriori (MAP) cores in parallel, resulting in a large area overhead. The two computationally challenging units in an MAP core are α and β recursion units. Although several methods have been proposed to shorten the critical path of these recursion units, their area-efficient architecture with minimum silicon area is still missing....
A low-complexity fully scalable interleaver/address generator based on a novel property of QPP interleavers
, Article Proceedings - IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 28 May 2017 through 31 May 2017 ; 2017 ; 02714310 (ISSN) ; 9781467368520 (ISBN) ; Shabany, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
5-th generation mobile networks aim the peak data rates in excess of few Gbs, which may appear to be challenging to achieve due to the existence of some blocks such as the turbo decoder. In fact, the interleaver is known to be a major challenging part of the turbo decoder due to its need to the parallel interleaved memory access. LTE uses Quadratic Permutation Polynomial (QPP) interleaver, which makes it suitable for the parallel decoding. In this paper, a new property of the QPP interleaver, called the correlated shifting property, is theoretically proved, leading to a fully scalable interleaver and a low-complexity address generator for an arbitrary order of parallelism. The proposed...

Abstract
A structure is suggested for spasing. The presented surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of Radiation (SPASER) is made up of a graphene nanosphere, which supports localized surface plasmon modes, and a quantum dot array, acting as a gain medium. The gain medium is pumped by an external light source. Since all the plasmons are carried on a graphene platform, the structure features coherent surface plasmons with high confinement and large life time. All the structures are analyzed theoretically using full quantum mechanical description. The main advantage of the proposed SPASER is its simple tuning capability of changing graphene's Fermi level, which is performed by either...
On the rate of oxidation of co on La2O3 doped NiO/Al2O3 catalysts: An artificial neural network approach
, Article Reaction Kinetics and Catalysis Letters ; Volume 85, Issue 2 , 2005 , Pages 347-353 ; 01331736 (ISSN) ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology
2005
Abstract
The rate constants of the oxidation of CO on a number of pure and La 2O3 doped NiO/Al2O3 solid catalysts were correlated with the mole percent of dopant, calcinations temperature, surface area, pore volume and pore mouth diameter by an artificial neural network simulator. The cross validation method had to be used due to the scarcity of the data. A three-layer network with 3 nodes in the hidden layer was found to simulate the system well. © Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest. Performance evaluation of thyristor-based static transfer switch with respect to cross current
, Article IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exhibition 2002 : Asia Pacific, Yokahama, 6 October 2002 through 10 October 2002 ; Volume 2, Issue ASIA PACIFIC , 2002 , Pages 1326-1331 ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Providing clean, continuous and reliable power to many industrial customers has become a necessity. Where possible, sensitive customers are supplied by two medium-voltage utility feeders one of which is used as back up. Thyristor-based Static Transfer Switches (STSs) are able to provide the loads with a fast transfer to the back up feeder when the main one fails. In addition to being fast, the transfer must be performed with no source paralleling which creates a cross current flowing between the main feeder and the back up one. Due to practical limitations, however, in some cases, cross current cannot be avoided. This paper investigates the performance of thyristor-based STSs with respect to...

Abstract
Long Term Evolution (LTE) supports peak data rates in excess of 300 Mb/s. A good approach to achieve such rates is by parallelizing the required processing in turbo decoders. An interleaver is an important part of a turbo decoder. LTE uses the Quadratic Permutation Polynomial (QPP) interleaver, which makes it suitable for parallel decoding. In this paper, we propose an efficient architecture for the QPP interleaver, called the Add-Compare-Select (ACS) permuting network. A unique feature of the proposed architecture is that it can be used both as the interleaver and deinterleaver leading to a high-speed low-complexity hardware interleaver/deinterleaver for turbo decoding. The proposed design...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Asgari, Sirous (Supervisor)
Abstract
Many Investigations have been carried out on high work hardening, strengthening and secondary hardening of MP35N superalloy. In this study, behavior of MP35N under uniaxial hot compression at 600 °C with true strain of 0.05, 0.10, 0.16 and 0.22 was investigated. After calculating on stress- true strain curve, work hardening rate versus strain come out. Serrated flow has been seen in all mentioned strains. In TEM investigation on these samples, dislocations array with extended faults and micro twinning have been seen. According to Suzuki mechanism with solute partitioning and diffusion of solute, stacking fault extended. Uninterrupted separations and combinations of partial dislocations lead...
A Critical Reading of Russel on Causation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
Causation is one of the most old and difficult problems of Metaphysics which is also important in Science and Philosophy of Science. There are three different views in the Ontology of Causation—Eliminativism, Fundamentalism and Reductionism. Also we know that the Ontology of Causation can be equated with the question of the difference between Causal and Non-Causal series of events, such that the answers to this question are correspondent to the mentioned views: 1)Eliminativism: There is not any difference between those two series and the concept of Causation does not have any objective or external being. 2)Primitivism: There is a difference between them but it can not be explained in any...

Analysis and Simulation of a Graphene Based Plasmon Laser
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Faez, Rahim (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the present thesis, the SPASER is investigated, from theory to structure design. SPASER is a counterpart of laser in 3D subwavelength dimentions. In other words, SPASER does not suffer from the diffraction limit of photons which is a drawback in laser technology. It potentially can generate intense coherent dark and bright surface plasmon modes. The small size of SPASER gives it the capability of being integrated with electronic chips. So, the electronic technology will become faster if the SPASER is realized. In this thesis, we intend to use the unique plasmonic properties of graphene in our designs. Plasmons on graphene platforms have longer propagation length and larger lifetime in...
Genco's Bidding Strategy in Day-Ahead Energy Market Considering Demand Response
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Since 1980s the electricity market has been gradually evolving from a monopoly market into a liberalized one for encouraging competition and improving efficiency. This brings the opportunity for generation companies (Gencos) to make more profits while embracing more risks of not being dispatched. Therefore, it has become a core interest for the Gencos to develop optimal bidding strategies to maximize the profits and minimize the risks while participating in such a competitive market. Error of determining day-ahead electricity price is one of the sources of the risk. Energy price has a high impact on bidding strategy optimization process. So it should be determined with low error which is not...

Abstract
Losses are unavoidable in any parts of power systems, from generation to receiving nodes and occur in transmission and distribution networks. However, the main loss component is produced in distribution networks. Energy losses in distribution networks are about 70% of technological transport energy losses.
Energy losses in distribution networks are an important indicator for the planning and operation of the system. A fast, reliable and accurate energy loss calculation method is required for optimal operation of the distribution networks.
Energy loss depends on network's operating conditions. Loads values and loads factors are time variables; therefore, methods based on probability...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ehsan, Mahdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
This thesis addresses the problem of dynamic security assessment in power sys-tems with an emphasis on its application in restructured power systems and issues arising in its applications. The new electric utility environment has an immedi-ate consequence of emphasis on reliability and secure operation of power systems. This requires faster and more precise methods to assess the dynamic aspect of se-curity. On the other hand, this issue is becoming challenging when the determined dispatch might not be accommodated due to violation of the limits. This thesis addresses the problem of dynamic security assessment in power sys-tems with an emphasis on its application in restructured power systems...
Optimal Sizing and Operation of CHP Based on Stochastic Programming
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
CHP (Combined Heat and Power) generates electricity and thermal energy simultaneously from input fuel. Since it has high energy efficiency and low installation time, it is an appropriate approach in energy management of residential complexes. In this project, stochastic programming based on Monte Carlo approach is used to handle uncertainties in the optimal sizing of CHP for residential complexes. Availability of CHP, boiler and AC bus as well as the electrical and thermal load forecast errors are considered as stochastic variables. Minimizing system total cost considering the probability of each scenario obtained from the scenario reduction algorithm is the objective function. The system...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Uncertain fuel prices and also global climate changes are accompanied by some state initiatives such as renewable portfolio standards (RPS). This has caused a fast growth in the amount of renewable energy installed worldwide especially wind energy over last decades. However, the intrinsic characteristics of wind farms output power, i.e. intermittency and volatility of wind speed along with being non-dispatchable in output generation of wind turbine raises many new technical and financial challenges for power system operators and planners. Up to these issues, large level of wind power penetration causes a growing concern in wind energy curtailment issue which the wind farm’s operator may be...
