Co-planning of Transmission System and Merchant Energy Storage
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Dependency of human life to supplying of electricity energy, leads to different challenges for power system operators and planners. Demand growth and development of renewable energy sources have caused heavy investment costs to the transmission system. High price of construction of new transmission lines make planners to investigate effective factors on transmission expansion planning in order to make better decisions. On the other hand, the different amount of energy consumption during a day and the uncertainty of renewable energy result in transmission line congestion which cause electricity price gap between peak hours and off-peak hours. This price gap, also, necessitate the development...

, Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 2 B , 2010 , Pages 93-101 ; 10263098 (ISSN) ; Ghodsi Hassanabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2010
Abstract
The sloshing phenomena in a partially filled tank can affect its stability. Modifications of tank instability due to the movement of the tank carrier, are key design points for the stability of a carrier. Even though the sloshing phenomenon has already been investigated using the BEM-FDM technique, the research in this paper covers this phenomenon in a porous media, which is new in 2-D coordinates. For this purpose, a Laplace equation has been used for potential flow, and kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions have been applied to the free surface. Also, a formulation has been developed for a free surface in porous media. BEM has been used for solving the governing equation and FDM...
Effect of Electromagnetic Stirring on GTAW Weld Solidification Structure of AA5052
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ashuri, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Conventional defects in GTAW welding of Aluminum 5052 alloy are the decrease in weld zone strength because of grain growth, formation of columnar grains in the fusion line, solidification cracks and porosities. In this work, effect of strong field electromagnetic stirring on solidification structure of 5052 alloy and elimination of GTAW defects have been investigated. For arc welding processes (especially tungsten inert gas welding), a process called magnetic stirring was proposed, patented, and investigated in the 1970s. The essential aim was to improve weld quality and they indicated that the the Lurentz force is cause of weld stirring. In the earlier researches, alternating magnetic field...
Applying Zoning Method for Solving 3D Fluid Flow Problems with Free Surface and Common Boundary Between Two Fluids by Using BEM (Case Studies: OWC Power Plant and Open Ended Storage Tank)
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Analysis of hydrodynamic model of sea wave problems has very good conformity with boundary element method (BEM). Because, the governing equation of many sea wave problems is potential equation which is the base of BEM. In this research, after some explanation about BEM and its application in fluid mechanics, a new composition of elements on the discretized boundary is introduced in favor of increasing the precision. In this method, the constant elements are used in corner elements and the linear elements are used in other elements. This issue is validated by comparing with analytical solution. In addition, free surface flow with porous medium in the fluid is investigated in sloshing 2D...

Abstract
Providing clean, continuous and reliable power to many industrial customers has become a necessity. Where possible, sensitive customers are supplied by two medium-voltage utility feeders one of which is used as back up. Thyristor-based Static Transfer Switches (STSs) are able to provide the loads with a fast transfer to the back up feeder when the main one fails. In addition to being fast, the transfer must be performed with no source paralleling which creates a cross current flowing between the main feeder and the back up one. Due to practical limitations, however, in some cases, cross current cannot be avoided. This paper investigates the performance of thyristor-based STSs with respect to...

Abstract
Graphene is a one layer atom thickness and zero energy gap so for using it in nano electronic and transistors baised on graphene it's energy gap should be opened.one of the methods for opening graphene band gap is creating nano scale boundaries or synthesize graphene nanoribbons. One of the new methods for graphene nanoribbon synthesize is longitudinal opening of carbon nanotube. In this thesis graphene nanoribbons synthesize with this method and analyze with AFM and Raman spectroscopy. Carbon nanotubes also have energy gap and IR absorption recently they used for living cell destruction. In this thesis we synthesize graphene nanoribbons and analyzing their optical absorption and use it for...

Fabrication of Graphene-WO3 Nanocomposites as Photocatalyst in the Visible Light Region
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akhavan, Omid (Supervisor)
Abstract
WO3 is known as a photocatalyst in the visible light region, but with lower efficiency compared to more interesting semiconductor photocatalysts such as TiO2 and ZnO. Many attempts have been done to increase the efficiency of this photocatalyst by incorporating metal and metal oxide nanoparticles or recently carbon nanotubes. On the other hand, application of graphene, as an unrolled carbon nanotube, for increasing the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 and ZnO has shown positive results. Furthermore, it was reported that such semiconductor photocatalysts (and very recently WO3) can photocatalytically reduce the chemically exfoliated graphene oxide sheets under UV-vis irradiation.

Synthesis of Graphene Oxide and Study of its Fluorescence Properties
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akhavan, Omid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Graphene oxide is a single sheet of Carbon atoms which has been arranged on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Functional groups such as epoxy, carboxyl and carbonyl are located on basal plane and at the edges of graphene oxide and they localize electrons on the surface of graphene oxide and open band gap in its band structure. Pure graphene has zero band gap, so existence of fluorescence properties is unlikely; but graphene oxide has fluorescence properties due to band gap in its band structure. Fluorescence properties of graphene have been used in live cell imaging and drug delivery, so study and increasing of fluorescence properties is significantly important. The purpose of this...
