Simulation and Design of Solar System for Liquid Fuel Production with the Approach of using Industrial Emissions
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Roshandel, Rramin (Supervisor)
Abstract
The long-term storage of solar energy presents a significant challenge in satisfying energy demands. Given the frequency and magnitude of solar radiation, this abundant and free energy source can be primarily stored in liquid fuels and utilized as needed, particularly in the long-distance transportation sector. Concurrently, the absorption and utilization of CO2 emissions from energy-intensive industries represent steps towards establishing a zero-carbon cycle to mitigate emissions. This study initially presents a thermodynamic analysis of synthesis gas fuel production via the reduction and oxidation cycle of ceria in a solar reactor under isothermal cycle conditions. Under radiation, ceria...
Structural Health Monitoring Using an Integrated Digital Twin in the Time-Frequency Domain
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
This study presents a novel framework for structural health monitoring (SHM) using a digital twin, capable of early damage detection, localization, and severity assessment. System identification is performed through online operational modal analysis, utilizing frequency response function (FRF) data across different time windows. The monitoring system employs two approaches: a data-driven approach for detecting the presence of damage and a model-based approach for determining its location and severity. In the data-driven approach, a Hankel matrix is constructed from FRF data, and the subspace angle is computed on principal components to identify damage. In the model-based approach,...
Measuring Dielectrophoresis Force Excerted on Polystyrene Micro-Beads using Optical Tweezers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Seyyed Reihani, Nader (Supervisor)
Abstract
The base of dielectrophoresis(DEP) technique has been demonstrated through electro-dynamic interactions between an applied non-uniform AC electric field and induced distributed dipoles within a polarized. In particle manipulation and/or separation using the DEP method, knowledge of precise DEP force of a particle is essential in designing a DEP device and improving its separation efficiency and accuracy. In most DEP studies related to particle manipulation and/or separation, however their absolute DEP forces remain unknown[2]. Insufficient information regarding the DEP behavior of particles can result in preventing a strategic maneuver for efficient particle manipulation and/or separation...

Abstract
Earlier, we engineered a wireless power transfer (WPT) system whose key element is a self-activating and self-decoupling transmitting (Tx) antenna called the high-impedance coil (HIC) that grants a high efficiency for a receiving (Rx) antenna with a free position in front of the Tx array. When the Rx antenna is located in front of the Tx one, the input impedance of the last one drastically decreases, which results in efficient power transfer. This impedance is initially so high that the Tx antenna in the absence of the Rx one does not accept power, which implies negligible open-circuit losses. This feature grants the automatic activation/deactivation of the WT system. In the present work, we...

Abstract
In the area of life assessment, none-destructive methods of inspection and evaluation (NDI/NDE) play important role to ensure if astructure is still healthy enough to get used of. Using ultrasonic stress waves is one of the easiest and cheapest methods of NDI. Accordingly, different modes of lamb wave are mostly of interest..There are various methods for generating lamb waves. One of these methods is using piezoelectric wafer actuator/sensors (PWAS). Accordingly, one of the most important parts of this method is to generate right mode via an appropriate choose of actuating frequency. In this text using a new method for finding tuning frequencies of different lamb wave modes proposed. For...

Abstract
TiO2 nanotubes were synthesized using a modified autoclave-free thermal method from as-prepared initial powders. The size of initial powders (IP) was found to be critical in determining the morphology and crystal structure of the final product. Oleylamine (OA) was used as the polymer agent in the preparation of initial powders with different mol ratios of OA/Ti: 1, 5, and 10. X-ray diffraction analysis depicted that the increase of mole ratio up to 10 resulted in smaller nanoparticles with the sizes of about 8 nm. It was also deliberated that low temperature thermally treated IP showed the characteristic diffraction pattern of titanate phase of nanotubes. Scanning electron...

Abstract
The force experienced by a neutral dielectric object in the presence of a spatially non-uniform electric field is referred to as dielectrophoresis (DEP). The proper quantification of DEP force in the single-cell level could be of great importance for the design of high-efficiency micro-fluidic systems for the separation of biological cells. In this report we show how optical tweezers can be properly utilized for proper quantification of DEP force experienced by a human RBC. By tuning the temporal frequency of the applied electric field and also performing control experiments and comparing our experimental results with that of theoretically calculated, we show that the measured force is a...

Abstract
Net fluid flow of soap films induced by (ac or dc) electric fields in asymmetric frames is presented. Previous experiments of controllable soap film flow required the simultaneous use of an electrical current passing through the film and an external electric field or the use of nonuniform ac electric fields. Here a single voltage difference generates both the electrical current going through the film and the electric field that actuates on the charge induced on the film. The film is set into global motion due to the broken symmetry that appears by the use of asymmetric frames. If symmetric frames are used, the film flow is not steady but time dependent and irregular. Finally, we study...

Abstract
Comparison of the traditional linear heating method of TPD with an original stepwise heating scheme was reported for the first time. Stepwise heating TPD was carried out by keeping the temperature constant as soon as ammonia desorption signal rises until the signal returns to the baseline. More ammonia desorption peaks on a SAPO-34 catalyst were identified using TPD with stepwise heating. The effect of temperature ramp on desorption peak broadening in TPD curve was also addressed. The more distinct ammonia desorption peaks in stepwise TPD indicates that ammonia adsorbs in about five or six different ways on SAPO-34, and attribution of different adsorptions may be explained considering some...

Abstract
Hydrocracking is one of the most versatile petroleum refining processes for production of valuable products including gasoline, gas oil, and jet fuel. In this paper, a five-parameter continuous lumping model was used for kinetic modeling of hydrocracking of vacuum gas oil (VGO). The model parameters were estimated from industrial data obtained from a fixed bed reactor operating at an average temperature of 400°C and residence time of 0.3 h. Product distributions were obtained in terms of the weight fraction of various boiling point cuts. The model parameters were estimated using the Nelder-Mead optimization procedure and were correlated with temperature. Comparison of experimental and...

Abstract
In this letter, we propose a method for real-time high density impulse noise suppression from images. In our method, we first apply an impulse detector to identify the corrupted pixels and then employ an innovative weighted-average filter to restore them. The filter takes the nearest neighboring interpolated image as the initial image and computes the weights according to the relative positions of the corrupted and uncorrupted pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the best existing methods in both PSNR measure and visual quality and is quite suitable for real-time applications
Kinetic modeling of pyrolysis of scrap tires
, Article Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis ; Volume 84, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 157-164 ; 01652370 (ISSN) ; Farhadi, F ; Khorasheh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The disposal of used tires is a major environmental problem. With increasing interest on recovery of wastes, pyrolysis is considered as an alternative process for recovering some of the value in scrap tires. An accurate kinetic model is required to predict product yields during thermal or catalytic pyrolysis of scrap tires. Pyrolysis products contain a variety of hydrocarbons over a wide boiling range. A common approach for kinetic modeling of such complex systems is lumping where each lump is defined by a boiling point range. Available experimental data for thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of scrap tires from the literature were used to evaluate two types of lumping models; discrete and...

Abstract
Compared with flat linear structures, tubular linear machines do not face edge effects, making their performance better than their flat counterparts. In this article, a novel linear variable-reluctance resolver with tubular configuration is proposed. To optimize the design of an electromagnetic structure, modeling methods are used. Thus, in this article, an analytical model for the proposed resolver is presented. This model is based on the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) method and is considerably less time-consuming than finite element analysis (FEA), yet provides accurate results. A conformal mapping is employed to compute the permeance of the air-gap. The proposed model is then utilized...
Information and the Brukner-Zeilinger interpretation of quantum mechanics: A critical investigation
, Article Foundations of Physics Letters ; Volume 19, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 1-20 ; 08949875 (ISSN) ; Safinejad, F ; Naqsh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In Brukner and Zeilinger's interpretation of quantum mechanics, information is introduced as the most fundamental notion and the finiteness of information is considered as an essential feature of quantum systems. They also define a new measure of information which is inherently different from the Shannon information and try to show that the latter is not useful in defining the information content in a quantum object. Here, we show that there are serious problems in their approach which make their efforts unsatisfactory. The finiteness of information does not explain how objective results appear in experiments and what an instantaneous change in the so-called information vector (or catalog of...
