Wind Harvesting via Vortex Induced Vibration for Electricity Generation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi Gharghani, Farshad (Author) ; Behshad Shafii, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There is a need for renewable energy sources to be more feasible. The purpose of this project is to develop a compact device that is able to harvest wind energy and transform it into electrical energy using the concept of vortex shedding. When calibrated correctly, the vortex shedding will induce resonant oscillation. Electricity would be collected from this oscillation using a magnet and coil assembly. This method was proven to work in water, but has not been applied to air currents. Our group designed and built a small-scale prototype to be tested in closed circuit wind tunnel. The wind harvester works at a moderate wind range of 3 to 5 m/s. Data was collected on the amplitude and...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Siyamak (Author) ; Rashtchian, Davood (Supervisor) ; Dabir, Bahram (Supervisor) ; Emadi, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nitrogen injection is a promising enhanced oil recovery process. Asphaltene precipitation during miscible gas injection is a common problem in oilfields throughout the world. In this work, a comprehensive study is conducted on effect of gas injection on phase behavior and asphaltene instability of live oil samples. Effects of oil API, gas type and concentration, pressure and temperature are studied under natural depletion and nitrogen injection processes by means of high pressure filtration and a photographic procedure coupled with image analysis. Filtration results show that nitrogen destabilizes asphaltenes more compared to methane and the problem is more severe for heavier crude samples....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tabatabaee Moradi, Haniyeh (Author) ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Sepehrian, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Yadollahi, Ali (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
As nuclear energy continues to be used as a useful energy resource, waste management, especially management of high-level nuclear waste (HLW), will always be a major concern, as the future generations should not be deprived of the valuable benefits of this energy. Vitrification of liquid high-level radioactive waste (HLW) has received greater attention, worldwide, than any other high-level waste solidification process. The high solubility of HLW in borosilicate glass, the controllable temperature of this type of glass and its low leaching rate in repository environment, have introduced borosilicate glass as a suitable host for HLW immobilization. In this project, the immobilization of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Fazel (Author) ; Kazemeini, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, the global environmental restrictions as well as; energy problems have directed researchers toward developing ideas of producing a clean liquid fuel from coal or natural gas as a major research topic. In this regard, a special attention is paid to the dimethyl ether (DME) as a clean material containing 34.8% oxygen possessing enough positive potential to replace the diesel and LPG fuels. One of the most economic routes for producing the DME is known to be the direct conversion of the synthesis gases and carbon dioxide first to the methanol and then its dehydration to the DME. Moreover, the DME is not limited to a particular country or resource area since small reservoirs of natural...

Investigating the Effect of Electric Fields on the Efficiency of Phase Micro Separator Using Simulation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Mehdi (Author) ; Mohammadi, Ali Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, the performance of electrocoalescence in a microfluidic device was investigated through numerical simulations. The microfluidic device consisted of two immiscible fluids, a continuous phase, and a dispersed phase, which were modeled as incompressible Newtonian fluids. The interface between the two phases was tracked using a phase-field model. A flow-focusing geometry was employed to crate water droplets in oil. The dispersed droplets were then pass over a set of electrodes. The merging of two adjacent droplets in the microfluidic device was observed by applying a constant electric field. The voltage of 60 V is the lowest voltage at which the regular merging of pairs of drops...

Combination of SAR & ISAR Techniques

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Nayebi, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a microwave imaging radar that achieves high resolution while taking advantage of pulse compression technology and the Doppler effect. In typical radar systems, in order to obtain a good azimuth resolution, one should use an antenna with big aperture. However this is not possible in many cases. SAR has overcome this problem by moving the antenna and so making a synthetic aperture. In inverse SAR (ISAR) the radar antenna is static and synthetic aperture is created by the movement of target. Typical SAR imaging aims at the static targets and when the target is moving, it does not operate well. When detecting moving targets by SAR, both radar and target are...

Vibration-Based Fault-Diagnosis of Rotating Machinery Relying on Frequency Transforms Time -

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Davood (Author) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis presents several methods time-frequency based approach for classifying the vibration signals of rotatery machine. It uses the features extracted from the time-frequency distribution (TFD) of the vibration signal segments. Results of applying the method to a database of real signals reveal that, for the given classification task, the selected features consistently exhibit a high degree of discrimination between the vibration signals collected from healthy and fault machine. A comparison between the performances of the features extracted from several TFDs shows that the STFT slightly outperforms other reduced interference TFDs.

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi Pari, Ehsan (Author) ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A group of vehicles are contributed to follow static or dynamic targets in a cooperative target tracking problem. The vehicles estimate the future location of dynamic targets based on the information they receive from other vehicles and targets. Noting to these estimations, the vehicles are able to decide the best movement toward the targets. Various control methods have been presented to solve different problems of target tracking which the majority of them proposed optimal control solutions. A new approach to the problem of tracking dynamic targets via cooperative multi-vehicle systems under the receding horizon control of the vehicles is proposed in this dissertation. A receding horizon...

Model Predictive Based Cooperative Search and Target Tracking With Dynamic Constraints

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi Pari, Hossein (Author) ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this Thesis, a new algorithm is presented to cooperatively guide a set of robots, modeled as dynamic vehicles, toward a moving object while their heading angles variation are limited and collision avoidance is also required. The trajectory of object has unknown behavior, such that, at each moment in time, during the mission period, the available information about the object's trajectory is merely its position and instantaneous velocity. Due to this situation, vehicles are supposed to determine their movements, based on the predicted object's trajectory. To meet the goals of the algorithm, a time-decreasing reward is associated with the object, such that vehicles can collect the reward...

Conflict-free Chromatic Art Gallery Covering with Vertex Guards

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarei Moradi, Somayeh (Author) ; Ghodsi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The visibility is one of the most important problems in computational geometry. Two points are said to be visible to each other, if the line segment that joins them does not intersect any obstacles. The art gallery problem is a well-studied visibility problem in computational geometry. It originates from a real-world problem of guarding an art gallery with the minimum number of guards who together can observe the whole gallery. In many of applications, the “guards” are “landmarks” deployed in an environment to help provide navigation and localization service to mobile robots. The mobile device communicates with these landmarks through wireless, or other “line-of-sight” signaling...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Sepehr (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Heat sources with temperatures less than 100 °C are available in various processes in the form of waste heat and from renewable sources such as solar energy. One of the methods of gaining benefit from these ubiquitous and abundant heat sources is using thermal harvesters that convert low-temperature heat into electrical energy without the need for the power grid. Portable harvesters can be a reliable and low-cost option for providing stable energy for low-power electronic devices such as wireless sensors. Many studies have been conducted at the global level to design and develop efficient low-temperature heat harvesting mechanisms. However, each of them is associated with fundamental...

    Conformal Prediction and Its Extensions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Alishahi, Kasra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, machine learning is used to solve various problems, and different machine learning models have increasingly become a part of our daily lives. This raises the importance of a more detailed examination of the models' outputs. In sensitive areas such as medical uses, this issue becomes even more critical, and using these models without having a framework to quantify the uncertainty of the outputs can lead to significant challenges and hinder their broader application. Conformal prediction is one of the frameworks that can help quantify the uncertainty of outputs. This framework is model-agnostic, meaning that we can use it for any model, including black-box models. The outputs of this...

Modification of carbohydrate polymers via grafting in air. 1. Ceric-Induced synthesis of starch-g-polyacrylonitrile in presence and absence of oxygen [electronic resource]

    , Article Starch - Starke ; Volume 54, Issue 3-4, pages 140–147, April 2002 Pourjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Zohurian Mehr, Mohammad J
    Abstract
Monomer grafting, a unique technique for polysaccharide modification, is always performed under inert (e.g., N2) atmosphere. This work is the first report related to evaluating the possibility and efficiency of the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) onto starch in presence of oxygen. Thus, corn starch (in both granular and gelatinized states) as well as soluble starch were grafted by AN using a ceric-carbohydrate redox initiating system. Graft copolymerizations were performed under nitrogen, air, and oxygen atmospheres at similar conditions. Grafting occurrence was verified using chemical and spectral proofs. The polymerization mechanism and kinetics were investigated by recording the...
