Development of an Analytical Code for Simulation and Design of Spiral Wound Heat Exchanger in Cryogenic Applications

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mostafazadeh Abolmaali, Ali (Author) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research aims to develop a numerical tool for design and performance evaluation of spiral wound heat exchanger (SWHE) in the cryogenic temperature range. This type of heat exchangers are used in gas liquefaction cycles due to their compact structure and ability to achieve high effectiveness values. High sensitivity of liquefaction cycles yield to heat exchanger effectiveness, effect of some physical phenomena in cryogenic temperature range, and complicated shell-side flow structure of SWHEs, turns the design and performance evaluation of cryogenic SWHEs into a challenging issue. Consequently, first of all, the geometrical parameters of SWHE were introduced and made dimensionless. In...

Development of Nusselt number and friction factor correlations for the shell side of spiral-wound heat exchangers

    , Article International Journal of Thermal Sciences ; Volume 139 , 2019 , Pages 105-117 ; 12900729 (ISSN) Mostafazade Abolmaali, A ; Afshin, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Masson SAS  2019
    Abstract
This research aims to investigate the thermo-hydraulic characteristics of flow in the shell side of spiral-wound heat exchangers with consistent shell geometry. To achieve this end, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics is employed. Geometrical configuration of spiral-wound heat exchangers can be completely determined by knowing six primary parameters including start factor, tube outside diameter, number of tubes in the first layer, number of layers, longitudinal pitch, and radial pitch. Dividing the longitudinal and radial pitches by tube outside diameter, the six primary geometrical parameters reduce to five non-dimensional parameters. The effects of number of tubes in the first...

    Abstract
Heat transfer between heat exchangers and the surrounding environment, referred to as heat-in-leak, is a crucial phenomenon in the cryogenic applications which can substantially degrade the heat exchanger performance. Present research is organized to investigate the mechanism of heat transfer between the shell-side fluid and the shell wall of spiral wound heat exchangers (SWHEs) to determine the heat transfer coefficient used in the heat-in-leak calculations. The heat transfer characteristics are studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools. First, 20 dissimilar SWHE models with respect to the geometrical parameters are built and then numerically simulated at different Reynolds...

    Abstract
Spiral Wound Heat Exchangers (SWHEs) can be a good and reliable choice for serving as the main heat exchanger in the cryogenic gas liquefaction cycles using throttling process such as the Linde-Hampson cycle. In this application, a high-pressure hot gas stream has to be cooled down via transferring heat to a low pressure cold gas in a high-effectiveness heat exchanger. Present research has been organized to develop a design model, which is able to find the optimum SWHE configuration for gas liquefaction cycles. The model has to be capable of considering the important physical phenomena in the cryogenic temperature ranges, including variation of fluid properties with temperature, longitudinal...

Generative Software Development through Emergence-based Transformation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mostafazadeh, Mahdi (Author) ; Ramsin, Raman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the ever-increasing demand for larger and more complex software systems, generative software development has become an attractive alternative to traditional approaches. Generative software development is in fact a transition from one complexity space to another; the higher the ratio of the complexity of the destination space is to the complexity of the source space, the more ideal the level of generation will be. In the ideal case, generative software development becomes equivalent to fully-automated software development. Despite widespread research on generative software development approaches–such as Model-Driven approaches, Software Product-Lines, Generative Patterns, and...

    Abstract
This paper presents a novel method for answering complex temporal ordering questions in the context of an event and query-based text summarization. This task is accomplished by precisely mapping the problem of "query-based summarization of temporal ordering questions" in the field of Natural Language Processing to "verifying a finite state model against a temporal formula" in the realm of Model Checking. This mapping requires specific definitions, structures, and procedures. The output of this new approach is promisingly a readable and informative summary satisfying the user's needs

    Abstract
In this study, a new mathematical programming approach for solving the joint timetabling and train stop planning problem in a railway line with double-track segments is proposed. This research aims to design an optimized train timetable subject to the station- capacity and time-dependent dwell time constraints. The objective function is to maximize the railway infrastructure capacity by minimizing the schedule makespan. The problem is formulated as a particular case of blocking permutation flexible flow shop scheduling model with dynamic time window constraints. Due to the combinatorial nature of the problem, heuristic algorithm and bound tightening methods are proposed that generate...

Introducing a Heuristic Approach to Solve Euclidean Traveling Salesman Problem and Evaluating the Accuracy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mostafazadeh Davani, Yalda (Author) ; Mahlouji, Hashem (Supervisor) ; Qasemi Tari, Farhad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The traveling salesman problem consists of a salesman and a set of cities in which the salesman has to visit each one of the cities only once, starting from an arbitrary city and returning to the same city. The challenge of the problem is that to find a trip to minimize the total length of the tour. The Travelling Salesman problem is a well-known and important combinatorial optimization problem. Despite this simple problem statement, solving the TSP is difficult since it belongs to the class of NP-complete problems. Due to its computational complexity, recent researches suggest that meta-heuristic approaches can be the best solution approach for the general form of this problem. This thesis...
