    Abstract
The accessibility of broadband Internet to home users has pushed video broadcasting applications up, in the list of most favorite applications in todays Internet. Such applications involve delivering the data which generated in a single sender to a set of users which are scattered around the world. While it was formerly believed that the IP-Multicasting is the mean to provide this kind of services, the trend has altered to the use of Application Layer Multicasting techniques due to their deployment simplicty. Since their advent, Peer to Peer applications has mitigated many problems previously unsolved in the field of communication. File sharing, distributed file systems, distributed data...

    Abstract
Ternary nanocomposites of polypropylene/polyamide 6/layered silicate were prepared through three different processing procedures. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the nanostructure of the samples, and tensile and impact strength measurements were conducted to assess the mechanical properties. It was shown that processing route has a significant effect on the delamination of clay platelets. Fully exfoliated nanostructure was achieved through a certain two-step processing route. Compatibilization of the blends affected microstructure as well as nanostructure. Mechanical properties were affected by changing the processing route, to a great degree....

Criteria in the Holistic and Analytic Rating of EFL Learners' Production of Agreement and Disagreement Speech Acts among Non-native English Teachers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motamedi, Mohammad (Author) ; Alemi, Minoo (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Conveying a successful message within a language profoundly stems from not only a linguistically appropriate utterance, but also a pragmatically appropriate discourse too. Broadly considering various facets of pragmatics, pragmatic assessment has not been potentially brought into perspective, and, as a result, the literature deserves more comprehensive attention. This study, guided by the principles of mixed methods design, pursued three purposes: to inspect the matches and mismatches, to explore rating variations, and to assess the rater consistency between the holistic and analytic rating methods of agreement and disagreement speech acts in L2 by non-native English teachers. To address...

Study of the scratch resistance criteria and their relationship with mechanical properties and microstructure in a ternary thermoplastic blend

    , Article Wear ; Volume 386-387 , 2017 , Pages 118-128 ; 00431648 (ISSN) Motamedi, P ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
Polymeric materials generally suffer from a low resistance to various types of surface mechanical damage, among which scratch is a prominent example. While several attempts have been made to assess the scratch resistance and its relationship with the bulk mechanical properties in simple polymeric systems, the available research on the polymeric blends is scarce. This study attempts to fill this gap by studying the link between the scratch resistance and mechanical properties in a ternary polymeric nanocomposite, which has proved to feature superior and tunable mechanical properties. For this aim, blends of polypropylene and polyamide 6 were prepared using melt blending with two different...

Design and Synthesis of Heterogeneous Nanocatalysts Based on Immobilized Metals on Polymeric Substrates and their Applications in Organic Reactions

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Motamedi, Anahita (Author) ; Pourjavadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, catalysts have shown the growing applications in chemical industries especially for drug synthesis. Using immobilized heterogeneous catalysts is a sensible way to benefit from advantages of both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. In this regards, homogeneous catalysts are immobilized on to a solid support through various methods. However, low loading amount of homogenous part and subsequently insufficient catalytic activity are main limitations of immobilized heterogeneous catalysts. For this reason, polymeric supports have been introduced to immobilize metal ions or nanoparticles. These polymeric supports not only possess advantages such as anti-corrosive properties, simple...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motamedi, Sadegh (Author) ; Sheikhzadeh, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Outsourcing is currently a challenging issue in the auto industry. On one hand, outsourcing has be-come a competitive imperative for automakers due to its significant benefits. On the other hand, it involves many aspects of risks that could potentially hurt core competencies of a firm. As such, in the auto industry, it is highly critical to make optimal outsourcing decisions for which an integrated framework offering a holistic view seems quite necessary. In this thesis, based on four fundamental research questions of “Who?”, “What?”, “Whom?” and “How?”, an integrated framework for outsourcing in the auto industry is developed in order to identify effective outsourcing factors and associated...

    Abstract
Ancillary services are generally referred as those services other than energy that are essential for ensuring reliable operation of electric power systems. This paper discuses different approaches for procuring required ancillary services for power system security. Furthermore, various design options for ancillary service markets are studied. Such markets are typically operated by an independent system operator (ISO). Different characteristics of each design option are also explained in this paper. The two most important factors which will be discussed for each design option are the price reversal phenomenon and total procurement cost. © 2007 IEEE

Optimum simultaneous clearing of energy and spinning reserve markets using cost/benefit analysis

, Article IEEE Power and Energy Society 2008 General Meeting: Conversion and Delivery of Electrical Energy in the 21st Century, PES, Pittsburgh, PA, 20 July 2008 through 24 July 2008 ; 2008 ; 9781424419067 (ISBN) Motamedi, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Zareipour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Considering the high level of interactions between energy and reserve markets, simultaneous clearing of these markets has been shown to provide more efficient solutions, than a sequential market clearing process. In addition, determining reserve requirements based on probabilistic approaches results in more economical efficiency, while maintaining an acceptable level of reliability, compared to deterministic approaches. This paper proposes a new method for clearing energy and spinning reserve markets simultaneously, while at the same time, spinning reserve requirements are determined based on a cost/benefit analysis as a probabilistic-based approach. This cost/benefit analysis considers both...

These lenses are fabricated through conventional IC fabrication methods (lithography, etching, …) and have an acceptable performance and small aberration with proper design. Different scalar and vectorial methods for the analysis of finite aperture diffractive optical elements have been investigated and advantages and disadvantages of each one have been discussed....

Investigation of the fracture resistance in hoop wound composites modified with two different reactive oligomers

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 30, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 3048-3055 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Abadyan, M ; Bagheri, R ; Haddadpour, H ; Motamedi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Rubber modification of hoop filament wound epoxy composites was investigated using amine-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (ATBN) and carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) oligomers. Both mechanical and physical properties of modified composites were investigated and the morphology of the samples was studied via scanning electron microscopy. Results indicated that, when added to the epoxy matrix, ATBN effected a superior increase in toughness, yet a more severe decline in compressive and flexural strength, compared to CTBN. In contrast, in the case of composite samples, incorporation of ATBN led to more favorable mechanical properties, from the viewpoint of both toughness and...

Facile synthesis of extremely biocompatible double-network hydrogels based on chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) with enhanced mechanical properties

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 135, Issue 7 , 2018 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Tavakoli, E ; Motamedi, A ; Salimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An easy and ecofriendly method for designing double-network (DN) hydrogels based on chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with high mechanical performance is described. When covalent bonds in the networks are used as crosslinking agents in the achievement of a higher mechanical strength, the irreversible deformation of these hydrogels after a large force is applied is still one of the most important obstacles. To overcome this problem, we used physical crosslinking for both networks. The mechanical strength, surface morphology, and cytotoxicity of the films were studied by tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy analysis, and an MTT assay. The synthesized chitosan–PVA DN hydrogels...

    Abstract
To achieve high rate of data transfer, tape mechanisms must be able to transport the tape with a constant velocity for scanning. During this process, it is desired to make the rise time minimized without timing and data transfer errors. In this paper, three servo systems including the take-up and supply reel servos for tape tension control and capstan servo for speed control are considered. So, tape transport mechanisms can be described with a nonlinear multi-input multi-output system (MIMO). After state-space representation of the problem, feedback control is designed for tracking objective. It should be mentioned that an increase in the speed of time response of system corresponds to an...

Control, Scaling and Stability Analysis of Teleoperated One-Dimensional Micro/Nano-Manipulation Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Motamedi, Mohammad (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Vossoughi, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this paper, a novel control approach for one-dimensional bilateral teleoperated nanomanipulation system is proposed. While manipulating objects with a nanomanipulator, real time visual feedback is not available. So, force feedback is used to compensate for the lack of visual information. Since nanometer scale forces are dominated by surface forces instead of inertial forces as in macro world, scaling of nanoforces is one of the major issues of teleoperation system. The Hertz elastic contact model is used to model the interactions between the slave robot and the environment. The proposed framework uses the simple proportional derivative control, i.e., the master and slave robots are...

Transparency enhancement of haptic systems based on compensation of device dynamics

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings, 13 November 2009 through 19 November 2009 ; Volume 10, Issue PART A , 2010 , Pages 103-110 ; 9780791843833 (ISBN) Tajaddodianfar, F ; Ahmadian, M. Abstract
Transparency is a measure of performance in haptic devices. In order to improve transparency and reduce the difference between the impedance transmitted to the user and the target impedance it is necessary to compensate for the dynamics of the haptic device. Due to stability reasons improvement of transparency is limited. Passivity as a stability criterion has been used widely in design and analysis of haptic devices, Since passivity is a conservative criterion, it acts as an obstacle in improving transparency of the haptic interfaces. In this paper instead of passivity, robust stability of the interaction is studied in the presence of parametric uncertainties due to variations in user hand...

    Abstract
During drying processes, moisture control of food products, such as dried tea, is of great importance. Improving dryer control, results in consistent production and reduction of energy consumption. However, the dryer is a complex system associated with model uncertainties. In this paper, a realistic uncertain model of a fluidized tea bed dryer is considered. Moisture content and temperature of tea leaves (or other products) are controlled at desired values by manipulating tea leaves heating rate. Developing a code by Robust Control Toolbox of MATLAB and modeling uncertainties, a robust controller is designed based on ′-synthesis with DK-iteration algorithm. Results show that in the presence...

Adaptive sliding mode control of a piezo-actuated bilateral teleoperated micromanipulation system

    Abstract
Piezoelectric actuators are widely used in micro manipulation applications. However, hysteresis nonlinearity limits the accuracy of these actuators. This paper presents a novel approach for utilizing a piezoelectric nano-stage as the slave manipulator of a teleoperation system based on a sliding mode controller. The Prandtl-Ishlinskii (PI) model is used to model actuator hysteresis in feedforward scheme to cancel out this nonlinearity. The presented approach requires full state and force measurements at both the master and slave sides. Such a system is costly and also difficult to implement. Therefore, sliding mode unknown input observer (UIO) is proposed for full state and force...
