, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vaghar-Mousavi, Danial (Author) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, modification of Polyvinylidene fluoride membrane in order to reduce membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors is investiged. To achieve this goal, chemical modification and grafting methods were used. Initially, by chemical modification, the reaction was made to make hydroxyl groups on the membrane surface. The hydroxyl functional groups were used as a site for connecting of subsequent monomers. Finally, the lysozyme enzyme was used as the main modifier to improve the hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties of the membrane surface. To evaluate the performance of the modified membrane in comparison with the pristine membrane, different tests, such as water contact angle...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Safaeifakhr, Alireza (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reverse osmosis membranes are one of the most common methods of desalination of water in the world today. In the meantime, aromatic polyamide thin-film composite reverse osmosis membranes have one of the best performances and can be widely used in industry. This project aims to make surface modifications on the made raw membranes and increase the degree of crosslinking to improve the functional properties of the membrane, such as the percentage of salt rejection and the flux of permeate, and the reduction of fouling. For this purpose, polyvinyl alcohol and l-arginine along with maleic anhydride as the crosslinking agent and hexamethylene diisocyanate were used for surface modification of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebadi Rad, Benyamin (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the current situation of energy, gas storage is one of the basic needs. Different methods have been used in order to storage gases. One of these methods is the adsorption of gases on solid materials, which are called as adsorbents. In recent decades, different gas adsorbents, such as silica gel, zeolite and activated carbon, have been studied. Most of these adsorbents are nonorganic materials. Recently, many researchers have tried to apply polymeric materials as gas adsorbents. In this regard, the obtained results on the different polymers showed that it is possible to achieve the proper gas adsorption. In this study, different samples were prepared from polysulfone by phase inversion...

Fabrication of a Polymer Compound to Increase the Earthquake Resistance of the Building

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalali Khales, Ali (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Every year hundreds of thousands of lives are taken away worldwide by natural disasters such as earthquakes. Walls made of concrete blocks or bricks, are amongst the most vulnerable type of walls, which tend to collapse during an earthquake. Due to their good sound and thermal insulation properties, unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are widely used in partitioning many of the commercial and residential buildings worldwide. URM is considered one of the most common types of partition wall systems in many of the school and hospital buildings and commercial buildings.URM partition walls are known to have very low drift capacity in seismic events and the failure mechanisms are known to be mostly...

Synthesis of Polyurea for Use in the Coating Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rouzbahani, Amir Reza (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
To produce polyurea, a secondary or higher amine must be combined with a diisocyanate. For this purpose, we first combined diethylenetriamine, and hexamethylene diisocyanate, which did not have good mechanical properties due to the aliphatic nature of the molecules. Then, instead of hexamethylene diisocyanate, we used MDI, which was mixed using a mechanical mixer but became a paste that was not suitable for coating applications. To reduce the viscosity of MDI, propylene carbonate was added to improve mixing, but the gel time also increased. Because the solvent was non-polar and the amine was polar, it was decided to add the solvent, amine, and polyvinyl alcohol as surfactants to allow faster...

Synthesis of Ultra-Low Pressure Reverse Osmosis (ULPRO) Membrane

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi, Hossein (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this project is to achieve a semi permeable high flux membrane with a reasonable salt rejection for the treatment of low osmotic pressure water. A thin film composite membrane consists of three polymeric layers was studied in this project. These layers were polyester support, polysulfone sub layer and polyamine selective layer. The polyester support provides the mechanical resistance against the operating pressure. The polysulfone sub layer provides the suitable area for polyamide synthesize, and the polyamide layer is the selective active layer of membrane.
The resistance to water penetration in sub layer was reduced first and then, the pores in the polyamide layer refined by...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mollavaysi, Pouya (Author) ; Frounchi, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer produces flexible products and is compatible with many polymers and additives, the reason is that it has Vinyl group which is polar and Ethylene group which is nonpolar. In fact, it consists of two parts. One is a hard and semi-crystalline Polyethylene region and the other is soft, flexible, polar, and amorphous Vinyl Acetate. Improving the properties of this copolymer can broaden its application. For this purpose, Ethylene Vinyl Acetate with 18 and 28% Vinyl Acetate was used as a matrix and nano-alumina as reinforcement in this project. The spherical structure and chemicallu active surface, along with significant mechanical properties, suggeats Alumina...

    Abstract
Today reverse osmosis (RO) is the dominant technology for desalination. Most of commercially available RO membranes are polyamide thin film composite (TFC) types which exhibit good performance. However, the major obstacle for application of polyamide TFC RO membranes is fouling which can be mitigate by surface modification. In this research, surface modification of fabricated aromatic polyamide TFC RO membranes was carried out using UV-initiated graft polymerization at different irradiation times (15, 30, 60, and 90 s) and various acrylamide concentrations (10, 20, and 30 g/L). Also, coating of membranes surface with various concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (10, 20, 30, and 50 ppm)...

The obtained results showed more than 30% increment in CO2 permeability, along with slight growth and reduction in N2 and CH4 permeabilities, respectively for 30wt% zeolite content membranes. Permeability...

Reducing the Environmental Impact of Waste Brine from Desalination Plant

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hormati, Hossein (Author) ; Farhadi, Fatollah (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Water is essential for human life and other organisms. Increasing population and consequent increase in water consumption has made freshwater scarcity a global problem. Desalination of saline water sources is a long-term solution to this problem. One of the most challenging issues in desalination is the management and disposal of brine. Disposal of brine into the sea and surface waters is the primary solution for brine management. Due to the environmental problems caused by the discharge of brine into the sea and surface waters, the concept of zero liquid discharge has recently been considered. In this research, an economic study of reverse osmosis-electrodialysis-crystallization structure...
