Observable/Unobservable Distinction in Philosophy of Science
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Mousavi Karimi, Mirsaeid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In an official announcement during the inaugural speech in 2012, where Hempel Award presented on behalf of the Philosophy of Science Association to Bas van Fraassen for “a lifetime scholarly achievement in the philosophy of science”, it was said that, “van Fraassen advocates a semantic approach to scientific theories and, on that basis, urges skepticism regarding laws of nature, anti-realism regarding unobservables, and pragmatism regarding explanation” (Gonzalez 2014, 5). van Fraassen’s approach to unobservable entities has a crucial role in his philosophy of science and also in this dissertation. The aim here is to defend van Fraassen’s claim based upon the distinction he makes between...
Critical Realism and Futures Studies: the Influence of Roy Bhaskar on Sohail Inayatullah
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mousavi, Mirsaeid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sohail Inayatullah is one of the most successful futurists of the last decade. His proposed method for futures studies, which is called Causal Layered Analysis (CLA), has attracted a lot of attention and has won futurists’ admiration. Although, Wendell Bell counts the study of epistemological foundations of futures studies as one of the major purposes in this field, unfortunately, no significant attempt has been made to clarify the epistemological foundation of CLA, up to this time. The primary purpose of this thesis is to relieve this weakness. Inayatullah calls his approach, in developing CLA, “critical”. On the other hand, Wendell Bell claims that Roy Bhaskar’s “critical realism” is an...
An Aalysis of Epistemological Justification of Inference to the Best Explanation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mousavi Karimi, Mirsaeid (Supervisor) ; Azadegan, Ebrahim (Supervisor)
Abstract
By “Analysis of Epistemological Justification of Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE)” I mean to examine whether the IBE argument can increase the probability of the truth of belief to the outcome of the argument or not. According to the Strong Version of IBE, this increase shows that the best explanation is more likely to be true, whereas according to the Weak Version the best explanation is more probable than its available rivals. The most influential arguments against these positions are: (1) The bad lot objection (BLO) according to which the idea that the best available explanations will be more likely to be true, presupposes that the truth is already more likely to be found among...

Abstract
In this paper, the relation between gain and resolution of an ideal analog optical differentiator in two different cases and their fundamental limits are investigated. Based on this relation, a figure of merit for comparison of the designed differentiators in recent papers is proposed. The differentiators are optimized using this figure of merit, and they are compared with each other to determine the best one. Also, a new differentiator is presented based on the dielectric slab waveguide in which the trade-off between its gain and resolution is easily controllable, and its best operating point is determined. © 2020 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
The aim of this project is to achieve a semi permeable high flux membrane with a reasonable salt rejection for the treatment of low osmotic pressure water. A thin film composite membrane consists of three polymeric layers was studied in this project. These layers were polyester support, polysulfone sub layer and polyamine selective layer. The polyester support provides the mechanical resistance against the operating pressure. The polysulfone sub layer provides the suitable area for polyamide synthesize, and the polyamide layer is the selective active layer of membrane.
The resistance to water penetration in sub layer was reduced first and then, the pores in the polyamide layer refined by...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mousavi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Sadrhosseini, Hani (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, water desalination is a widely-used method for producing clean and fresh water. Recent researches in this area have mostly focused on Reverse Osmosis technology which is one of the most efficient technologies in water desalination. A new idea to increase the efficiency of a recently-designed reverse osmosis membrane called “Honeycomb Carbon Nanotube Membrane” is presented through molecular dynamics simulation. Although in this study only the inlet area of the honeycomb structure which is a Y-shaped entrance, is modeled and studied, but obviously, any improvement in the membrane inlet, equals better results at outlet which means a more efficient desalination process. Present thesis...

Abstract
Heat curing was devised in temperature-controlled steam and water environments to synthesize reverse osmosis (RO) polyamide (PA) membrane. The effect of new curing media on the physicochemical properties and RO performance of the synthesized polyamides was fully investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and water drop contact angle. The results show a reduction in amide linkage content on the surface of the steam-cured polyamide and surface and bulk of the water-cured polyamide. Additionally, it was revealed that heat curing in the humidity-controlled environment...
Design and Simulation of Xenon Gas Collection System
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Otukesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Karimi Sabet, Javad ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
Abstract
In this thesis, desublimation (deposition) of xenon gas has been studied. Through the past decades, desublimation, became one of the important methods of separation. High purity products and applicability when common methods of separation, as distillation, are not applicable, make desublimation more efficient. Heat transfer phenomenological study of direct phase change of gas to solid (desublimation), evaluation of variation of different parameters during the phase change and finally comparison of experimental results of desublimation and mathematical modeling data are the main considerations in present thesis. Because of low cost and accessibility and heat transfer phenomenological study...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, modification of Polyvinylidene fluoride membrane in order to reduce membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors is investiged. To achieve this goal, chemical modification and grafting methods were used. Initially, by chemical modification, the reaction was made to make hydroxyl groups on the membrane surface. The hydroxyl functional groups were used as a site for connecting of subsequent monomers. Finally, the lysozyme enzyme was used as the main modifier to improve the hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties of the membrane surface. To evaluate the performance of the modified membrane in comparison with the pristine membrane, different tests, such as water contact angle...
An Investigation into the Hot Tensile Properties of a Heat Resistant Steel
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi Taheri, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
The microstructures of stainless steels consist of an austenitic matrix with almost continuous network of primery carbides. This class of steel had replaced the traditional super alloys with a reduction in costs and has similar properties under conditions of creep, which is one of the principal degradation mechanisms leading to failure in service at elevated temperaturs , therefore, their mechanical properties such as tensile strength and creep resistance are particularly important in hot deformation. Recently the effects of temperature and aging time on static strain aging in worked stainless steel have been investigated. In this study the deformation behavior of HP-series austenitic...
Optimal Design of Partial State-Feedback Controllers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Karimi, Houshang (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Masoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Design of optimal controllers for nonlinear systems and even for linear systems is one of the most important parts of the control science. In optimal controller design, our aim is to maximize or minimize some kind of cost function associated with that particular problem. Such cost functions are usually combining the overall control effort, system’s energy, or some other important specifications of the system. Explicit solution for linear quadratic controllers exists under some mild conditions such as stabilizability of the system. The solution is in the form of a full state-feedback law. But in practical problems, we may not have access to all of the system state variables. The problem can...
Decentralized adaptive control of large-scale affine and nonaffine nonlinear systems
, Article IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement ; Volume 58, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 2459-2467 ; 00189456 (ISSN) ; Menhaj, M. B ; Karimi Ghartemani, M ; Saboori, I ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper presents a decentralized adaptive control design for a class of large-scale nonlinear systems with unknown subsystems. When the subsystems are modeled by affine equations, a direct adaptive controller is devised based on the Lyapunov theory, so that the stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed by introducing a suitably driven adaptive rule. A neuro-based structure is proposed when the subsystems are nonaffine, and the stability analysis is also performed based on the Lyapunov theory. Moreover, the unknown interactions among the subsystems are considered as having a nonlinear function against the simple form considered for the affine case. The proposed controllers are...

Abstract
Rapid and selective detection of biomarkers at trace levels is a highly coveted objective in the early diagnosis of cancer. Herein, we disclose the design and synthesis of a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) substituted perylene diimide. This compound is fully characterized in solution by multi nuclear NMR, as well as in gas state by ESI-MS. Surprisingly, solid-state characterization revealed an unusual cubic morphology with particle dimensions of 80–160 nm. Fluorescence studies indicate that the bulky POSS units effectively prevent perylene's aggregation caused quenching, yielding quantum yields as high as 92%. Exposing the sensor droplet-cast on quartz to anline and o-toluidine,...
