Abstract
This research numerically and experimentally investigates a small turbocharger radial flow compressor with a vane-less diffuser and volute. The geometry of the compressor is obtained via component scanning, through which a 3D model is prepared. The flow inside this model is numerically analyzed by using a Navier-Stokes solver with a shear-stress transport turbulence model. The characteristic curves of the compressor and the contributions of its components to total pressure drop are acquired by measuring the static and total pressures at different cross sections of the compressor. Numerical results are verified with the experimental test results. The model results exhibit good agreement with...
Modifications in Commercial Diesel Engines to Perform Under Difficult Respiration Conditions
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Durali, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this project we are about to adopt a method for implementing commercial diesel engines (truck and bus engines) in applications with difficult respiration condition like what happens in a submarine. To this end, working conditions of such engines are introduced and standard constraints are explained. Then the structure of already manufactured submarine engines is presented. At this point an engine from known manufacturers was selected for calculations to be performed on it. Since test and measurement equipments were not yet ready, simulation using computer software (GT-POWER v6.1) was selected as the solving method. First, the engine was modeled in its nominal working conditions. After...

Abstract
In this research, multi-level optimization of the profile of the splitter blades of a turbocharger compressor is performed using genetic algorithm in order to improve its performance. Successive corrections of the profile at hub, mid-span, and shroud of the splitter blades, with the objective of decreasing the incidence losses at the leading edge and adjustment of the blade loading at the shroud, result in an impeller having improved splitter blades. The impeller flow field analysis shows that the optimization has been successful in reducing the flow leakage at the shroud region as well as the losses in the leading edge region. Although numerical simulations predict a decrease by 0.5% in...

Abstract
This paper presents how can teach complicated problems in electrical engineering subjects (electrical machines) by using simulators such as MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation of direct vector control of induction machine (IM) drive on the rotor flux direction with composite model flux observer can improve electrical machine teaching-learning procedure for graduated and under graduated levels. In the indirect vector control of IM, current reference values are used for estimation angle of the rotor flux space vector (ARFSV), however using current reference values instead of current real values can decrease accuracy of ARFSV. In the direct vector control, current real values (current feedback)...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Talebian, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Ebrahimnejad, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the present study, the factors that affect the IPO underpricing in the Tehran Stock Exchange are investigated. We define the variables of IPO percentage, age and size of companies, dummy variable for rounded IPO prices, market return in a month before the initial public offering, average return of IPOs that had been done during one month before the IPO of each ticker and the dummy variable for industrial group in which the company is located. We had to calculate the initial return of 246 companies that were offered in the years 1380 to 1395. In this study, due to the existence of a daily stock price volatility constraint, a new algorithm was introduced to calculate the dependent...

Abstract
Design of centrifugal compressors can be accomplished using methods provided in text books and open literature. In this general approach, after determination of dimensions in meridional plane, blade profiles are designed using aerodynamic methods. Then, some blades are trimmed at the beginning to avoid inlet blockage. But there is no clear guidance on how this trimming must be performed. With this widely implemented method, splitter blades have the same profile as main ones. In this research, blade profiles and dimensions of the compressor impeller are not changed while the effect of changes in the position and angle of splitters leading edge are investigated. An optimization scheme is...

Efficient Management of River Water Quality Based on Pollution Trading Approach
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Shamsai, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
Abstract
“Sustainable development” is a frequently used phrase, but the idiom has been experienced little since it was coined by the Brundtland, due to its intrinsic complications. The issue is going to compromise two key components; economy and ecology. One of the solutions based on concept of sustainable development that has been proposed for maintaining water quality at acceptable levels is to cap pollutant emissions at a sustainable level, then establish an economic market in which the right to discharge pollutants is traded according to market supply and demand mechanisms. Water quality trading or pollution trading is one such kind of market-based program that has also been described using names...
Assessment of Optimum Environmental Flows Using Economic Evaluation Methods
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shamsai, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the main challenges of Water Resources Planning and Management (WRPM) is to balance water allocation between different uses. Usually, due to political and economic power of other uses, ecosystem receives less attention. Environmental flow is the allocated flow to ecosystem. Ecosystem provides a wide range of services to humanity. Therefore, environmental flow is not exclusively a matter of sustaining ecosystem but also a matter of providing humans with better life. Several methods have been developed to determine the environmental flow but only a few consider its socio-economic aspects. Consideration of these aspects could assist decision-makers with determining the optimum flow and...

Abstract
Entrance of air to close water conduits occurs in many ways. This phenomenon makes displeasing effects on water transport structures. Two-phase flows in closed conduits are studied experimentally, numerically and theoretically. Even after decades, due to the complexity of the subject, these studies still require development and reformation. Numerical and theoretical two-phase models are often limited to a special regime of flow."Volume Of Fluid"(VOF) is a model for non-mixing two-phase flows. "Fluent" software uses this model in this field of flows. Volume of fluid is used successfully in some problems like dam break or rising bubbles. Main disadvantage of this model is distribution of the...

Semi-supervised Breast Cancer Subtype Clustering Using Microarray Datasets
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Motahhari, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
Abstract
Gene expression microarrays can be used for precision medicine and targeted therapies. The data generated by microarrays are high-dimensional causing statistical inference of any parameter a daunting task. In this thesis, it is shown that regardless of high-dimensional datasets produced by microarrays, the inference can be robust in the sense that random selection of features results in the same conclusion as far as the number of selected features are chosen appropriately. Stratifying patients with breast cancer based on their gene expression levels shows that patient subtypes are almost independent of the feature selection strategy. Moreover, using less noisy datasets coming from RNAseq...
