Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a major cause of coronary artery disease leading to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Currently, coronary angiography is considered to be the most accurate technique to diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD). However, this technique is an invasive and expensive procedure with risks of serious complications. Since the symptoms of CAD are not noticed until advanced stages of the disease, early and effective diagnosis of CAD is considered a pertinent measure. In this paper, a non-invasive optical signal, the finger photoplethysmogram (PPG) obtained before and after reactive hyperemia is investigated to discriminate between subjects with different CAD conditions. To this end,...

Abstract
Flow mediated dilation (FMD) is a non-invasive method for endothelial function assessment providing an index extracted from ultrasonic B-mode images. Although utilized in the research community, the difficulty of its application and high cost of ultrasonic devices prevent it from being widely used in clinical settings. In this study we show that substituting the ultrasonic device with more easily handled and low cost photoplethysmography and electrocardiography is possible. We introduce new indices based on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) and show that they are correlated with the ultrasound-based FMD Index. To this end, a conventional ultrasound FMD test was carried...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movahedian, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
The goal of this project, has been designing a downhole camera, which captures images from environment of a well and transmits that to the surface. High temperature and pressure of well environment and corrosion and limitation in data transmission rate which is because of mono conductor cable, are the challenges of designing this system. For doing that, first, the principles of image compression are explained. Then, based on that, an image compression system based on wavelet transform has been designed. Its components are examined too. For making the introduced system resistant to the high pressure and temperature, using an isolated case is suggested. For implementation, an...

Abstract
In this paper, a new method for automatic cancellation of mismatch-induced errors in folding ADC is introduced. Using "Trimmable MOSFET's" for input transistors, this method results in considerable reduction of the size of speed-determining transistors while keeping integral non-linearity (INL) arbitrarily low. Using this technique, an 8-bit folding ADC is re-designed and its performance is compared to the original work.©2005 IEEE
Performance Analysis and Design of Spectral Noise Logging Tool
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movahedian, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, one of the most important concerns of oil and gas wells is to increase the efficiency of wells. To increase efficiency, well integrity must be monitored. One of the factors that destroy the integrity of the well is the creation of hydraulic fractures inside the oil and gas wells, which is one of the main factors that reduce the efficiency of the well. Hydraulic fractures cause water, gas and other materials to leak into the well or oil and gas to leak out of the fracture, which in both cases reduces the efficiency of the well. One of the most important technologies for identifying hydraulic fractures is the use of SNL tools from oil and gas wells. The oil and gas well SNL tool listens...

Abstract
Direct discharge of high-strength industrial effluent often upsets municipal wastewater treatment plant processes. This pilot study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of a UASB system in pre-treating effluent from a medium-size traditional slaughterhouse. Experiments were conducted in a continuous flow 500-1 pilot plant initially inoculated with 200 1 municipal anaerobic digested sludge. With an influent COD concentration of 3000-5000 mg/l, the system was started with a loading of 1.8 kg COD/m3.d (F/M of 0.24 kg COD/kg VSS.d) at 25°C. The granules formed after 4 months of operation were dark brownish with a diameter of 1-4 mm and a settling velocity of 20 m/hr. Once granules were...

Abstract
A new technique for improving the performance of low-voltage folding ADC's by extending the input range is presented. It is shown that by using both PMOS and NMOS differential pairs in the folding blocks, the overall input voltage range of the ADC can be increased to rail-to-rail. A novel self-adjustment method is also introduced to compensate for the different input-output characteristics of PMOS and NMOS differential pairs. A low voltage 8-bit 80 MSample/s folding/interpolating ADC is then designed and fabricated in a 0.18 μm CMOS process. Operating with a supply voltage as low as 1.2 V, measurements show an INL below ±0.55 LSB, SNDR of 43.5 dB at 80 MHz Sampling Frequency and power...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movahedian Attar, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sonic and ultrasonic measurements are used for checking status of wells. Well logging is used to estimate well specifications like borehole diameter, casing thickness, cement bond quality and cement sheath thickness. In this thesis, some reported works in field of sonic/ultrasonic measurement of oil wells are reviewed and results of software implementation of ultrasonic measurement with pitch-catch arrangement, pulse-echo arrangement and phased array arrangement are presented. ultrasonic measurement with pitch-catch arrangement uses one transducer for transmitting ultrasonic waves and two transducers (in different distances) for receiving ultrasonic waves. Ultrasonic measurement with...
Density Measurement in Oil and Gas Wells using Ultrasonic Sensors
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movahedian Attar, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Production logging consists of running measurement instruments called logging tools into an oil or gas well to measure various parameters such as temperature, flow velocity, pressure, density, etc. The primary purpose for production logging is to allow enhancing production profits and decreasing costs. Nowadays the common way for fluid density measurement as a part of these tools depends on radioactive source. Special considerations must be taken upon the use of this principle due to its radioactive character. This thesis is focused on a non-radioactive method of determining density. The subject of this thesis is to consider methods for measuring density based on principle of acoustic...

Abstract
This paper investigates the performance of a MOS track-and-hold circuit as the front end of a wide input range and high-speed single-sided ADC. In order to reduce charge injection and clock feedthrough errors, a new technique for employing a dummy transistor in the bootstrapped switch of the track and hold circuit is introduced. Performance of the proposed circuit for the two cases of constant and non-linear hold capacitor is studied. It is also shown that how and when dummy switch and bulk switching method can improve the accuracy of theT/H. © IEICE 2007
Study of Methods and Design of the Electronic Section for Detection of Fraction of Different phases (Water, Oil and Gas) in Deviated Wells and Flow Measurement for each phase
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movahedian Attar, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Most of the time there are three different materials in oil wells; Oil, water and gas. Measuring volume percentage and flow of the individual materials (phases) is an important issue, due to their critical role in extraction process control. Measuring tool should be able to measure flow and percentage of each phase in a case that they are separated (in deviated wells due to gravity). In addition, the measurement should be carried on in a high temperature and high pressure environment and in presence of corrosive substances. Most of previous researches on Multi-Phase Flow Meter (or MPFM) led to mechanical methods to measure flow and they usually use electrical impedance or permittivity for...

These methods include collecting various audio databases, extracting efficient features from speech signals, using feature selection algorithms, designing different classifiers, as well as combining...
Fully Digital Implementation and Optimization of Openhole Oil Well Surface Modem
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movahedian, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Gholampour, Iman (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Once a well has been drilled before it is cased with the steels (open-hole well), some logging must be done to record information’s about layers, geologic formations, geophysical and petrophysical properties of well. All the information’s that gathered from sensors and tools transmitted to the surface by a down-hole modem. This information is corrupted during the transmission by the communication channel. The most notable influence of this channel is noise, attenuation and interference between successive data bits. On the other hand, the characteristic of channel changes with the length of the cable, temperature, connections and so on. So using a set of fixed filters is not effective. The...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sattari, Sourena (Supervisor) ; Moeini Aghtaie, Moein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electric vehicles due to their higher energy density and longer life cycle compared to other storage systems. However, safety concerns about catastrophic risks like fires exist, caused by thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries. This study aims to provide an accurate electrochemical thermal model for predicting the phenomenon of thermal runaway. In recent years, researchers have conducted many numerical models that generally estimate input parameters. Accurate modeling of thermal runaway is challenging due to the wide range of physical properties and conditions. Therefore, understanding the importance of uncertainty in input parameters,...

Abstract
Four 5-, 10-, 20- and 30-story moment frames, representing low-, mid-, and two high-rise structures, were subjected to a great number of idealized directivity pulses. The amplitudes and periods of pulses vary from 0.02 g to 1.0 g and 0.5 to 12 sec, respectively. Over 1400 nonlinear dynamic analyses of low- to high-rise moment frames were performed which were feasible through using modified fish-bone model. The distribution of interstory drift along the height was studied and two applied contours were proposed: (i) the maximum interstory drift contour, and (ii) the critical story contour. These contours were demonstrated versus the ratio of natural period of the structure to the pulse period...

Abstract
In this article singular points of a parallel manipulator are obtained based on a novel geometrical method. Here we introduce the constrained plain method (CPM) and some of its application in parallel mechanism. Given the definition of constraint plane (CP) and infinite constraint plane (ICP) the dependency conditions of constraints is achieved with the use of a new theorem based on the Ceva geometrical theorem. The direction of angular velocity of a body is achieved by having three ICPs with the use of another theorem. Finally, with the use of the above two novel theorems singularities of the 3UPF_PU mechanism are obtained. It should be emphasized that this method is completely geometrical,...

Abstract
An analytical model is proposed to study the effect of particle size on melting enthalpy and entropy of metallic nanoparticles (NPs). The Mott's and Regel's equations for melting entropy in the combination of core average coordination number (CAC) and surface average coordination number (SAC) of freestanding NPs are considered. Clusters of icosahedral (IC), body centered cubic (BCC), and body centered tetragonal (BCT) structure without any vacancies and defects are modeled. Using the variable coordination number made this model to be in good agreement with experimental and molecular dynamic (MD) results of different crystal structures. The model predicts melting entropy and enthalpy of...

Abstract
Grinding is widely used for manufacturing of components that require fine surface finish and good dimensional accuracy. In this study a thermo-mechanical finite element analysis is conducted to find out how grinding parameters can affect temperature and residual stress distribution in the workpiece. Results of parametric study presented in this work indicate, by carefully selecting the grinding parameters, minimum thermal and mechanical damage can be achieved. Higher workpiece velocities produce higher surface residual stress. By increasing depths of cut, depth of tensile residual stresses increases. Convection heat coefficient does not have any considerable effect on surface residual stress...
