DeFining and Critical Sets of Graphs and Latin Squares
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahmoodian, Ebadollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
Since critical and defining sets have been examined in various fields of combinatorics, including Latin squares and different branches of graph theory, we aim to present a portion of the obtained results con-cerning defining sets in diverse fields of graph theory, and provide a survey on them.In the present dissertation, we examine defining sets of vertex coloring, edge coloring, total coloring and forcing sets of orientation of graphs, perfect matching, hull and geodetic sets. Since complete graphs’ col-oring defining sets and Latin squares’ critical sets are closely related,we shall discuss them in a coloring framework. Furthermore, for dif-ferent graph families, including regular graphs,...

Abstract
Taxonomy learning is one of the major steps in ontology learning process. Manual construction of taxonomies is a time-consuming and cumbersome task. Recently many researchers have focused on automatic taxonomy learning, but still quality of generated taxonomies is not satisfactory. In this paper we have proposed a new compound similarity measure. This measure is based on both knowledge poor and knowledge rich approaches to find word similarity. We also used Neural Network model for combination of several similarity methods. We have compared our method with simple syntactic similarity measure. Our measure considerably improves the precision and recall of automatic generated taxonomies. ©...

Abstract
In this paper, we propose an optimization framework to retrieve an optimal group of experts to perform a multi-aspect task. While a diverse set of skills are needed to perform a multi-aspect task, the group of assigned experts should be able to collectively cover all these required skills. We consider three types of multi-aspect expert group formation problems and propose a unified framework to solve these problems accurately and efficiently. The first problem is concerned with finding the top k experts for a given task, while the required skills of the task are implicitly described. In the second problem, the required skills of the tasks are explicitly described using some keywords but each...

Abstract
In this paper, we propose an optimization framework to retrieve an optimal group of experts to perform a given multi-aspect task/project. Each task needs a diverse set of skills and the group of assigned experts should be able to collectively cover all required aspects of the task. We consider three types of multiaspect team formation problems and propose a unified framework to solve these problems accurately and efficiently. Our proposed framework is based on Facility Location Analysis (FLA) which is a well known branch of the Operation Research (OR). Our experiments on a real dataset show significant improvement in comparison with the state-of-the art approaches for the team formation...
On dynamicity of expert finding in community question answering
, Article Information Processing and Management ; Volume 53, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 1026-1042 ; 03064573 (ISSN) ; Fallahnejad, Z ; Beigy, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Community Question Answering is one of the valuable information resources which provide users with a platform to share their knowledge. Finding potential experts in CQA is beneficial to several problems like low participation rate of the users, long waiting time to receive answers and to the low quality of answers. Many research papers focused on retrieving the expert users of CQAs. Most of them are taking expertise into consideration at the query time and ignore the temporal aspects of the expert finding problem. However, considering the evolution of personal expertise over time can improve the quality of expert finding. In many applications, it is beneficial to find the potential experts...

Abstract
Taxonomy learning is a prerequisite step for ontology learning. In order to create a taxonomy, first of all, existing 'is-a' relations between words should be extracted. A known way to extract 'is-a' relations is finding lexicosyntactic patterns in large text corpus. Although this approach produces results with high precision but it suffers from low values of recall. Furthermore developing a comprehensive set of patterns is tedious and cumbersome. In this paper, firstly, we introduce an approach for developing lexico-syntactic patterns automatically using the snippets of search engine results and then, challenge the law recall of this approach using a combined model, which is based on...
Expertise finding in bibliographic network: Topic dominance learning approach

Abstract
Expert finding problem in bibliographic networks has received increased interest in recent years. This problem concerns finding relevant researchers for a given topic. Motivated by the observation that rarely do all coauthors contribute to a paper equally, in this paper, we propose two discriminative methods for realizing leading authors contributing in a scientific publication. Specifically, we cast the problem of expert finding in a bibliographic network to find leading experts in a research group, which is easier to solve. We recognize three feature groups that can discriminate relevant experts from other authors of a document. Experimental results on a real dataset, and a synthetic one...

Abstract
In this study, the anticorrosive effect of dodecylbenzenesulfonicacid-doped polyaniline nanoparticles [n-PANI (DBSA)] as a conductive polymer was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Initially, the n-PANI (DBSA) were successfully synthesized via inverse microemulsion polymerization leading to the spherical nanoparticles with an average diameter less than 30 nm. Two coating systems including 1 wt% n-PANI(DBSA) blended epoxy ester (n-PANI(DBSA)/EPE) and neat epoxy ester (EPE) were coated on the carbon steal substrate. The anticorrosion performance of the prepared coatings was studied using EIS measurement in 3.5%...
A joint classification method to integrate scientific and social networks

Abstract
In this paper, we address the problem of scientific-social network integration to find a matching relationship between members of these networks. Utilizing several name similarity patterns and contextual properties of these networks, we design a focused crawler to find high probable matching pairs, then the problem of name disambiguation is reduced to predict the label of each candidate pair as either true or false matching. By defining matching dependency graph, we propose a joint label prediction model to determine the label of all candidate pairs simultaneously. An extensive set of experiments have been conducted on six test collections obtained from the DBLP and the Twitter networks to...

Abstract
Measuring semantic similarity of web services has several benefits and most of the proposed service discovery algorithms are based on measuring the similarity of the requested service with each of the advertised services. In this paper, we propose a method for measuring the similarity of web services which are annotated with OWL-S ontology. First, a semantic similarity measure for determining the similarity of OWL concepts is discussed and then based on this measure, the functional similarity of services is defined. Then it is showed that the precision of algorithms that only take into account the functional properties of services for measuring their similarity are low. Therefore the textual...

Abstract
Local scouring at the downstream of sluice gates in the erosive beds is one of the main concerns of hydraulic engineers because of the significant damage that it can cause to the hydraulic structures. It is important to control the local scour depth at downstream of hydraulic structures to ensure safety operation of these systems. Many researchers have conducted various studies to predict the maximum depth and diameter of scour hole and develop new methods in order to control this phenomenon. One way to overcome this problem is the use of apron, or non-erosive bed. In order to shorten the apron length or decrease the effect of the...
Experimental Study of Pressure Fluctuation in Two Phase Slug Flow In a Tunnel with Rectangular Cross Section with an Expansion Transition and Horizontal Slope
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghie, Mahmood (Supervisor)
Abstract
Air enterance in to flowing water is something that is commonly seen in the water conveyance systems. The mixture of Air and water that flow together create a kind of flow that is called two phase flow. This kind of flow is often seen in culverts and water conveyance systems. There are different flow patterns in two phase flow. Considering pressure fluctuation, pressure drop and pressure recovery, slug flow pattern is the most complicated pattern among all.
Sometimes a singularity is used in a tunnel; one of the singularities that are frequently used in water conveyance system is expansion transition. In this study an experimental setup is used to model two phase slug flow, which passes...

Performance Analysis and Optimization of Optically Steered Arrayed Antennas with Gratings
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari, Mahmood (Supervisor)
Abstract
It is well known that arrays of antennas make it possible to steer the radiation pattern without steering a physical structure. For the past few decades this has been considered for many civil and military communication systems. Recently, ultra-short pulses are considered for high resolution radars and ultra-wideband communication systems. Systems with short pulses and large antenna arrays may benefit from high resolution in both temporal and spatial domains. But the implementation of the ultra-wideband feeding circuits for such antenna arrays is a hard job even with state of the art electronics. Optical technology has been applied, successfully, to a number of radio applications such as...
Laboratory Investigation For Unsymmetric Rectangular Weir
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mahmood (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sharp crested weirs are one of the main and oldest means of measuring discharge in water conveyance systems. Many studies have been done on sharp rectangular weirs and have provided many relationships regarding the effect of geometric parameters and various factors on discharge coefficient of the weirs. In some places, due to existence of obstacles or barriers in the channel, it is impossible to create a symmetrical continuous weir some other cases, multiple or asymmetric weirs should be used, which is the main concept of this project.Since it seems unlikely that a purely mathematical model can review the impact of the multiplicity and asymmetry of these weirs without using empirical...
Optimization of Maximum Frequency and Power, Extraction of Parameter Data and Final Publication Design of High Power Microwave Pulse Generation Using nonlinear Transmission Line with the Periodic Structure of the Gas Switch
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari, Mahmood (Supervisor)
Abstract
High-power (108 – 109 W) RF pulses with a carrier frequency of C band and a duration of several oscillation periods can be produced through direct energy conversion of a travelling high-voltage pulse with the use of nonlinear elements.
Nonlinear transmission lines consist either of lumped nonlinear elements and provide spatial dispersion of excited oscillations or of elements uniformly distributed on a certain line segment. The first type of NLTL’s can be referred to NLTL’s with spatial dispersion. The second type of NLTL’s is ensemble of nonlinear oscillators with a characteristic natural frequency and temporal dispersion. In the first case, the duration of electromagnetic pulses is...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mahmood (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the most important methods of controlling discharge in water industry which is widely used in irrigation, water distribution, waste-water engineering, drainage, flood control and other water related projects, is side weir. The hydraulic behavior of flow over side weir is spatially varied flow with decreasing discharge. Various investigators have related the weir discharge coefficient as a function of main channel upstream Froude number and the fraction of weir height to upstream depth . Performance of sharp crested side weirs with extended length (as labyrinth side weir with asymmetric geometry) has been studied in this thesis. The variables for this study are height of weir ,...
Analysis and Design of Nanoantenna Arrays
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari, Mahmood (Supervisor)
Abstract
If the size of the conventional telecommunication antennas -that are widely used in transmitting broadcasted radio and TV messages- is reduced by a nanometer size these antennas can be used at optical frequencies. Dimensions of these optical nanoantennas -that made of nanoparticles with highly permittivity- can be smaller than half of the wavelength. Based on this capability, optical nanoantennas have some important applications such as optical communication, photovoltaic devices, non-classical light, and optical sensing. After studying on optical nanoantennas and their features, in this project, we present distinctions between optical NAs and MW antennas and then investigate about different...
