Multiuser Interference Mitigation for Performance Enhancement in OCDMA and OFDMA Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Nezamalhosseini, Alireza (Author) ; Marvasti, Farokh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the extremely fast growth in high speed data rate demand in the recent years, it is necessary to make use of the optical technologies in telecommunication access networks. Passive optical networks (PONs) has got much attention compared to other optical access architectures due to some advantages such as low installation and maintenance expenses, and providing more reliable network transmission.
In this thesis, we will study two multiple access techniques, namely optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) and optical orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OOFDMA). Since the system performance of these techniques are mainly limited by multiple access interference, we...

    Abstract
Classifying the modulation type of radio signals plays an important role in current and future wireless communication systems. We present a modulation classification method based on convolutional neural networks that reaches high accuracy in face of various channel characteristics and signal conditions without requiring the network to have a very large depth. Experiment results show that the proposed method reaches accurate classification under different system impairment settings that include sampling rate offset, carrier frequency offset, multi-path fading, and additive white Gaussian noise. For instance, compared to a state-of-the-art method, accuracy is improved up to 25% in classifying...

    Abstract
A novel architecture for efficient time and frequency synchronization, applied to the long-term evolution (LTE) standard, is proposed. For symbol timing, we propose applying a symbol-folding method on top of the sign-bit reduction technique, leading to a novel algorithm for the cyclic prefix-type recognition in LTE. Following the symbol timing, the fractional carrier frequency offset is estimated and compensated using an adaptive gain loop, which allows for a high-accuracy compensation in a short interval. In the frequency domain, for cell search, we propose a sign-bit reduction technique on top of the matched filter method for the primary synchronization signal detection. In addition, we...

    Abstract
In this article, the authors introduce and propose an overloaded Synchronous Optical Code Division Multiple Access (SOCDMA) based on Unipolar Walsh Code (UWC) for fiberoptic communication systems. Given μ as the number of chips, it is shown that 2L - 2 active users can be supported by the proposed system. In this system the users of the network are categorized into two groups. Users of each group transmit at the same power level but different from the level of the other group's users. Using the UWC properties we propose a simple receiver that cancels multiple-user interference (MUI) completely. Moreover, we obtain the optimal power level of each group in order to minimize the probability of...

Interference cancellation in optical CDMA systems via advanced binary optical logic gate elements

    , Article IEEE Communications Magazine ; Volume 50, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 96-101 ; 01636804 (ISSN) Nezamalhosseini, S. A ; Marvasti, F ; Ghaffari, B. M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this article we present an all passive optical iterative interference cancellation method for optical CDMA. We propose the receiver structure based on advanced binary optical logic gates (ABOLGs). Since the performance bottleneck in optical communication systems is the conversion from optical to electronic domains for optical detectors, the interference cancellation has been performed in the optical domain. In incoherent optical communication systems, we have only the positive values for the optical signals. In the proposed system, we bypass the negative values using logic arrays. In the simulations we consider multiple access interference and neglect other sources of noise. Simulation...

A high-throughput low-complexity VLSI architecture for ZF precoding in massive MIMO

, Article IEEE International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks, CAMAD, 19 June 2017 through 21 June 2017 ; Volume 2017-June , 2017 ; 23784873 (ISSN) ; 9781509063024 (ISBN) Mirfarshbafan, S. 2017
    Abstract
In this work we present a high-throughput, low-complexity design for linear precoding in massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Large number of Base Station (BS) antennas in massive MIMO at one hand has caused the performance of linear precoders to be near-optimal and at the other hand has increased their complexity due to the need for the inversion of matrices with large dimensions. To avoid this complexity, approximate inversion methods based on Neumann Series have been proposed. However, in this work, we propose an architecture for Zero Forcing (ZF) precoder based on the Neumann Series approximate inversion that further reduces the complexity by replacing matrix-matrix...

Novel FWM-based spectral amplitude code label recognition for optical packet-switched networks

    , Article IEEE Photonics Journal ; Volume 5, Issue 4 , 2013 ; 19430655 (ISSN) Nezamalhosseini, S. A ; Rezagholipour Dizaji, M ; Fouli, K ; Chen, L.R ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
We propose and demonstrate a novel architecture for four-wave mixing (FWM)-based recognition of spectral amplitude code (SAC) labels in optical packet-switched networks. With a proper code design, a unique FWM idler for each SAC label, referred to as a label identifier (LI), is generated in a nonlinear medium. A serial array of fiber Bragg gratings is then used to reflect the LI wavelengths. Each LI is associated with a unique amount of delay between two optical signals received at two photodiodes (PDs). Label recognition is then achieved by measuring this unique time delay (referred to as the characteristic delay). The main advantages of the proposed method include the following: no...

We theoretically and experimentally evaluate a beat interference cancellation receiver (BICR) for direct detection optical orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing (DD-OFDM) systems that improves the spectral efficiency (SE) by reducing the guard band between the optical carrier and the optical OFDM signal while mitigating the impact of signal-signal mixing interference (SSMI). Experimental results show that the bit-errorrate (BER) is improved by about three orders of magnitude compared to the conventional receiver after 320 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission for 10 Gb/s data with a 4-QAM modulation using reduced guard band single-sideband OFDM (RSSB-OFDM) signal with 1.67 bits/s/Hz SE...

    Abstract
Centralized and cloud computing-based network architectures are the promising tracks of future communication systems where a large scale compute power can be virtualized for various algorithms. These architectures rely on high-performance communication links between the base stations and the central computing systems. On the other hand, massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology is a promising solution for base stations toward higher spectral efficiency. To reduce system complexity and energy consumption, 1-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are leveraged with the cost of lowering the signal quality. To recover the lost information, more sophisticated algorithms, like...

Rcci Curvature for Metric-Measure Space via Optimal Transport

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Abolfazl (Author) ; Bahraini, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Ranjbar Motlagh, Alireza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
One of the important questions in mathematics is generalized. In case of metric spaces, one of the questions is: Can we extend notions of Riemannian geometry to arbitrary metric spaces smoothly? Ricci curvature is one of the most important concepts in differential geometry. Ricci curvature is defined for the Riemannian manifold and has many applications in mathematics and physics like Einstein’s equation in relativity theory. There is a good notion for a metric space having “sectional curvature bounded below by K” or “sectional curvature bounded above by K”, due to Alexandrov. Can we define the concept of Ricci curvature in metric space? A motivation for this question comes from Gromov’s...

    Abstract
Seismic design codes reduce loads by using response modification factor. Because of the reserved strength in structural elements and capacity of structure to dissipate energy, structures can be designed for lower seismic loads. This factor has modified over time. In this thesis, the effect of the reduction in behavior factor on the response of two kinds of reinforced concrete systems were evaluated. Moment resisting frames and dual systems with different heights and regularity in plan, heve been design according to the behavior factor which is recommended in the 3rd edition of the Iranian codes of practice for seismic resistance design of buildings (Standard No. 2800). Drift and...

The aim of the current research is to demonstrate that a Meta-heuristic algorithmis capable of solving complex inventory problems and with future improvements it is able to achieve...

Reduction of Residual Displacement of Concrete Structures by use of High Strength Rebars

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tazarv, Mostafa (Author) ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reinforced concrete bridge columns located in regions of high seismicity are designed with large ductility capacity for adequate protection against collapse. This type of design tends to result in large permanent displacements. To maximize post-event operability and to minimize repair costs, new design strategies to reduce these residual displacements are necessary. Even though seismic codes ensure life safety for bridges, large residual displacement after severe earthquake may make the bridge useless. For example, after 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake (Japan), more than 100 reinforced concrete bridge columns experienced a tilt angle of more than 1 degree (1.75% drift). These columns had to...

Experimental Investigation of the Behavior of Squat Composite Corrugated Shear Walls Under In-Plain Shear

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehrsoroush, Ali (Author) ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The new lateral load resisting system introduced in this dissertation is a kind of squat composite shear wall consisting of a concrete core as filler and two steel corrugated sheets as cover. Reinforced bars are not used in this kind of construction. Load resisting process of the walls is provided by 3 factors: concrete core, steel corrugated covers on both sides of the central core and shear-friction interaction between the core and covers. There is not any specific formula for their design because of their novelty and few researches on this kind of walls and absence of code provisions. In this project, squat composite walls were constructed with dimensions of 106.8×90 (cm2) from corrugated...

Identification and Abnormal Condition Detection of a Cement Rotary Kiln

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadeghian, Masoud (Author) ; Fatehi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important parts of a cement factory is the cement rotary kiln which plays a key role in quality and quantity of produced cement. In this part, the physical exertion and bilateral movement of air and materials, together with chemical reactions take place. Thus, this system has immensely complex and nonlinear dynamic equations. These equations have not worked out yet. Only in exceptional case; however, a large number of the involved parameters were crossed out and an approximation model was presented instead. This issue caused many problems for designing a cement rotary kiln controller. In this thesis, we employed a nonlinear system identification method for identification,...

    Abstract
Because of absence of adequate studies, design of deep beams with web openings has not yet been covered by most codes of practice. The most studies have been on simply supported deep beams with web openings and have been set up experimentally. There are very few tests of continuous deep beams available in the literature. So it was decided in this thesis the behaviour of concrete continuous deep beams with web openings using finite element software ANSYS to be investigated. Primary purpose of this thesis has been evaluating the use of finite element analysis method for analysis of concrete continuous deep beams with web openings. The next target of this thesis has been assessment of...

Exploring of Influence of Boron on Acidity of Organic Functional Groups by DFT Calculation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehrpajouh, Sima (Author) ; Fattahi, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Acidity values of some compound (e.g., alkanes, alcohols, carboxylic acids and amines) with or without boron substitute have been studied theoretically to evaluate the influence of boron on acidity of organic functional groups. We have derived the unoccupied reactive orbital that show the maximum localization on the boron pπ atomic orbital overlapping with the lone-pair orbital of an electron donor. Localization of unoccupied reactive orbital on the boron pπ atomic and the polarizability of the boron center are two factors which affect acidity values of functional groups. Conformational searching was performed using MM (Molecular Mechanics). The most important conformations were optimized at...
