    Abstract
Peridynamics is a nonlocal reformulation of solid mechanics which can reproduce the solution of classical continuum mechanics as its horizon approaches zero. Taking this idea into consideration, we proposed a new coupling approach between meshfree peridynamics and finite element method. An intermediate variable horizon element called “morakkab” is introduced to transfer force and momentum between peridynamic and FEM regions. In the original peridynamic formulation, artificial ghost forces will arise if the horizon varies with position; The creation of these artifacts is avoided by utilizing a modified peridynamic equation of motion based on the concept of co-family. The accuracy of the...

On the validity of peridynamic equation of motion in variable horizon domains

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 195 , 2021 ; 00207403 (ISSN) Nikpayam, J ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Peridynamics is a nonlocal theory of solid mechanics which is suitable for modeling discontinuities and fractures without requiring external theories. In the original peridynamic equation of motion, the internal forces are integrated over the entire domain of the body. Although this equation complies perfectly with physical principles, its heavy calculations make it practically impossible to use. To avoid this difficulty, we can benefit from a special case of the peridynamic equation of motion in which the integration domain of the internal forces is limited to the family of particles. A limitation of this special equation, which is the most common equation in the peridynamic literature, is...

Development of an Adaptive Model for Coupling the Meshfree Peridynamics to the Finite Element Method

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Nikpayam, Jaber (Author) ; Kouchakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The presence of spatial partial derivatives in the equations of classical continuum mechanics has led to the fact that methods based on this theory are not valid in displacement discontinuities (such as cracks). The peridynamic theory is a nonlocal formulation of solid mechanics which is most suited to model discontinuities and dynamic fractures in continuous or discrete media. By substituting integral expressions instead of partial differentials in the equations of motion, peridynamics provides an integrated model that is valid and the same in continuous, discontinuous, and discrete media. The capability of the peridynamic theory in modeling discontinuities and cracks has been demonstrated...

Torsional Flexural Stability Analysis of Narrow Section Beam Subjected to Moving Mass

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikpayam, Jaber (Author) ; Dehghani Firouzabadi, Roohollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Long thin rectangular beams are used in many industrial engineering including railways, aerospace and etc. Beam subjected to moving mass is one of the classic problems in mechanics and vibrations of beams and have been studied by many researchers. In most of done works, the moving mass was assumed to be small compared to beam mass and only acceleration effect of mass was considered. Also in many of researches only bending of beams was studied. Moving mass imposes 2 type of force in the supporting beam, first one is weight and the other is due to motion of mass and contains lateral, coriolis and centrifugal acceleration effects. In addition, due to the particular geometry considered (narrow...

Investigation of Flow Rate and Cooling Water Temperature Effects on the Process Parameters in Centrifuge Machine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghaei, Majid (Author) ; Otukesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Safdari, Jaber (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Centrifuge is a method in which great gravitational-like forces are used. Gravitational forces which cause molecules to move and are relevant to molecular weight; can cause isotope separation. The separation of light isotope from heavy one is done with a centrifugal field which produces a pressure gradient for the gas mixture. Pressure gradient is different for each of the isotopes due to the dependence of pressure gradient to the mass of the materials. But the separation in this way is very limited. The capacity of separation can be brought up by producing an additional axial flow in the rotor. This rotational flow can be produced with internal or external incitement. Rotational flow with...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rashidi, Abbas (Author) ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Supervisor) ; Safdari, Jaber (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this work, bioleaching was used to extract valuable uranium from a low grade ore. Bioleaching experiments were carried out in batch cultures using a native strain of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of rotation speed, initial redox potential, initially added Fe concentration, particle size, pH, temperature, pulp density, and culture type. In the shake flask systems, over 99% of the uranium was bioleached in 48 hours at some conditions. Uninoculated flasks gave only around 25% leaching. At each study, uranium and iron concentrations, solution oxidation– reduction potential and pH were measured. The results showed that 150 rpm, d80=100 ...

Peak load and energy absorption of DP600 advanced steel resistance spot welds

    , Article Ironmaking and Steelmaking ; 2016 , Pages 1-8 ; 03019233 (ISSN) Jaber, H. L ; Pouranvari, M ; Salim, R. K ; Hashim, F. A ; Hoveida Marashi, S. P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2016
    Abstract
The paper aims at investigating the microstructure, failure mode transition, peak load and energy absorption of DP600 dual phase steel during the tensile-shear test. It was found that the welding current has profound effect on the load–displacement characteristics. In the low welding current, welds failed in interfacial failure mode. Increasing welding current resulted in sufficient weld nugget growth to promote double-sided pullout failure mode with improved mechanical properties. Further increase in the welding current caused expulsion and failure mode was changed to single-sided pullout with reduced energy absorption capability. It was found that the fusion zone size is the key parameter...

    Abstract
Zirconium has attracted considerable attention in the biomedical field owing to its biocompatibility and desirable tribological and mechanical properties. In this study, we anodized pure zirconium in an ammonium fluoride and ethylene glycol electrolyte, which produced a coating of ZrO2 nanotubes (NTs). The ZrO2 coated samples were annealed at different temperatures, and the morphology and structure of the coated substrates were studied using XPS, SEM, TEM, EDS, and SAED. The micro/nanomechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the samples were evaluated. Wear tests performed on bare and coated substrates revealed that the coated samples annealed at 400 °C had a significantly lower...
