    Energy Reduction in GPGPUs

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Falahati, Hajar (Author) ; Hessabi, Shahin (Supervisor) ; Baniasadi, Amirali (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The number of transistors on a single chip is growing exponentially which results in a huge increase in consumed power and temperature. Parallel processing is a solution which concentrates on increasing the number of cores instead of improving single thread performance. Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are parallel accelerators which are categorized as manycore systems. However, recent research shows that their consumed power and energy are increasing. In this research, we aim to propose methods to make GPGPUs energy effiecient. In this regard, we evaluated the detailed consummed power of GPGPUs. Our results show that memory sub-system is a critical bottelneck in terms of performance and...

Aging Based Cache Policy for The Network of Caches

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafaei, Shayan (Author) ; Rezazad, Mostafa (Supervisor) ; Ghahramani, Amirali (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The basis of the current IP-based networking architecture is on addressing locations (IP addresses). This way of locating and searching content does not meet the existing applications’ demands for generating and consuming larger data. In order to confront this problem, Named Data Networking (NDN) has been proposed that allocates names to data instead of the location. This fundamental change improves the functionality of the network in terms of various aspects such as smoother mobile routing, higher security, intrinsic multicast, broadcast system, and enables caching at the network level. As data directly receives an address in NDN, it can reside anywhere in the network. Furthermore, content...

Shear-rate dependence modeling of gelcast slurries: Effects of dispersant content and solid loading

    , Article Ceramics International ; Vol. 40, issue. 1 PART A , 2014 , pp. 123-128 ; ISSN: 02728842 Nojoomi, A ; Faghihi-Sani, M. A ; Khoshkalam, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Gelcasting, as a ceramic forming technique, is getting worldwide attention, in that it can be used to make high-quality, complex-shaped ceramic parts with a wide range of powders. However, a model, which can appropriately describe the shear rate dependence behavior of the slurry in casting process simulation, is limited. Therefore, this study mainly sought to investigate the best model representing the behavior of as-prepared gelcast slurry. A premix solution was prepared with monomer/cross linker of AM/MBAM with ratio of 25:1. In this procedure, ammonium polyacrylate sodium (NHPANa) was used as the dispersant and the solid load included Al2O3/20 vol% ZrO2 powder mixture. Series of slurries...

Effect of Zirconia Content and Powder Processing on Mechanical Properties of Gelcasted ZTA Composite

    Abstract
Addition of fine zirconia particles in the alumina matrix in order to produce ZTA composite is a well-known method for improving the mechanical properties of alumina ceramics such as flexural strength and fracture toughness. Increasing homogeneity and reducing alumina grain size are two key factors for achieving proper mechanical properties in this ceramic matrix composite. In this work two batches of ZTA powder precursor were prepared through mixing of alumina and zirconia by ball milling and in situ synthesis of ZTA composite via solution combustion method. The bending strength testing samples were fabricated through gel-casting process. The effects of different powder processing methods...

Injectable polyethylene glycol-laponite composite hydrogels as articular cartilage scaffolds with superior mechanical and rheological properties

    Abstract
In this study, injectable PEG-based hydrogels containing Laponite particles with mechanical and structural properties close to the natural articular cartilage are introduced. The nanocomposites are fabricated by imide ring opening reactions utilizing synthesized copolymers containing PEG blocks and nanoclay through a two-step thermal poly-(amic acid) process. Butane diamine is used as nucleophilic reagent and hydrogels with interconnected pores with sizes in the range of 100–250 µm are prepared. Improved viscoelastic properties compared with the conventional PEG hydrogels are shown. Evaluation of cell viability utilizing human mesenchymal stem cells determines cytocompatibility of the...

Studying the Influence of Laponite Silicate Nanoparticles on the Mechanical and Structural Properties of Poly (Ethylene Glycol) Hydrogels, Synthesized under Mild Condition

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nojoomi, Amirali (Author) ; Simchi, Abdolreza (Supervisor) ; Maddah Hosseini, Hamid Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Hemophilia is a group of hereditary genetic disorders that impair the body's ability to control blood clotting due to the lack of coagulation factors. Frequent joint and soft tissue bleeding is one the most common problems amongst these patients which can become progressively destructive for cartilage tissue in case of the late treatment. In this work, injectable PEG-based hydrogel nanocomposites with mechanical and structural properties close to cartilage tissue were fabricated. First, primary copolymers with PEG blocks of 600 g.mol-1 and 900 g.mol-1 without and with 2.5 wt.% Laponite nanoclay were synthesized by two-step thermal poly (amic acid) process. After polymer purification,...
