Preparation and Characterization of Polyamide 66 / CNT Nano Composite

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Noorbakhsh Jafary Dehkordy, Pooyan (Author) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polyamides have found great attraction in the wide variety of application due to their desireable and tribological properties and appropriate processability. Due to their low mechanical strength reinforcing of these types of polymers has always been one of the important academic and industrial issues. In order to improve mechanical properties of such polymers, different kinds of reinforcement particles such as titaniom diaoxide, Nano clay, glass fibers (Short or long glass fiber), etc were used. Carbon nano tubes have high thermal and electrical conduction and mechanical properties; they are widely used as a reinforcement particle for polymer matrix. In this study, carbon nano tube and...

Phase Separation in Binary Liquid Crystal Mixtures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Noorbakhsh, Javad (Author) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Phase separation of a 50:50 binary system composed of two prolate ellipsoids with different axis ratios is investigated through molecular dynamics simulation. The system can be considered as a coarse-grained model of a binary liquid crystal mixture. Phase separation has been detected in the system by changing the density as the control parameter. The system goes through two different phase changes, one being the phase change due to phase separation and the other one due to orientational phase transition. In the latter case coexistence of the two particles results in simultaneous phase transition

A unified approach to detect and distinguish hardware trojans and faults in sram-based fpgas

    , Article Journal of Electronic Testing: Theory and Applications (JETTA) ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2019 , Pages 201-214 ; 09238174 (ISSN) Ranjbar, O ; Bayat Sarmadi, S ; Pooyan, F ; Asadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In recent years, confrontation with hardware Trojans has become a major concern due to various reasons including outsourcing. Such a growing threat is more pronounced in reconfigurable devices as they are used in widespread applications due to low design cost and short time-to-market. Besides their vulnerability to hardware Trojan attacks, SRAM-based reconfigurable devices are also significantly susceptible to faults originated by particle strikes. There have been various methods to mitigate either hardware Trojan attacks or faults. To our knowledge, however, no method has been presented that can integrate detecting, distinguishing, and mitigating faults and Trojans. In this paper, we...

In-band radar cross-section reduction of the slot array antennas by RAM-based frequency selective surfaces

    , Article IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation ; Volume 15, Issue 5 , 2021 , Pages 457-463 ; 17518725 (ISSN) Noorbakhsh, B ; Abdolali, A ; Janforooz, M ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Inc  2021
    Abstract
A method for reducing radar cross-section (RCS) of the slot array antenna by utilising the radar absorbing material, while preserving the radiation performance simultaneously, is proposed and discussed. The scheme is based on the implementation of the multilayer frequency selective surface-radar-absorbing material (RAM) capable of operation over a wide frequency band. The use of radar absorbing material on an antenna’s radiation screen causes a change in surface current, resulting in the radiation pattern of the antenna. Therefore, by designing the coating pattern of the radar absorbent material as a substrate and a capacitive patch as a unit cell on the antenna board, the reduction of 19 dB...

    Abstract
In the present work, the mechanical properties, in particular, the Poisson's ratio of four two-dimensional silica structures, called here α,β,γ and δ are studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The α structure has been synthesized experimentally and the others have been reported as the most stable low-energy structures that reveal in-plane negative Poisson's ratio based on the first principles calculations. Among these structures, β-silica exhibits the largest in-plane negative Poisson's ratio which is 2–4 times higher than penta-graphene. Our results illustrate that the classical molecular dynamics simulation reproduces results in agreement with those of the first principles...

    Abstract
Urban rail planning is extremely complex, mainly because it is a decision problem under different uncertainties. In practice, travel demand is generally uncertain, and therefore, the timetabling decisions must be based on accurate estimation. This research addresses the optimization of train timetable at public transit terminals of an urban rail in a stochastic setting. To cope with stochastic fluctuation of arrival rates, a two-stage stochastic programming model is developed. The objective is to construct a daily train schedule that minimizes the expected waiting time of passengers. Due to the high computational cost of evaluating the expected value objective, the sample average...

    Abstract
The effect of temperature on the short-range order (SRO) structures, deformation mechanisms and failure modes of metallic glasses (MGs) is of fundamental importance for their practical applications. However, due to lack of direct structural information at the atomistic level from experiments and the absence of previous molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to reproduce experimental observations over a wide range of temperature, this issue has not been well understood. Here, by carefully constructing the atomistic models of Cu64Zr36 and Fe80W20 MGs, we are able to reproduce the major deformation modes observed experimentally, i.e. single shear banding (SB) at low temperatures, multiple...

On the controllability of phase formation in rapid solidification of high entropy alloys

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 748 , 2018 , Pages 679-686 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Jafary Zadeh, M ; Aitken, Z. H ; Tavakoli, R ; Zhang, Y. W ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The demonstration of high entropy alloys (HEAs), or more generally multi-principal-element alloys (MPEAs), which display a greater resistance to softening at elevated temperatures and embrittlement at cryogenic temperatures, has offered an accessible alternative alloying process for materials scientists and engineers. Although solidification is a fundamental process in synthesis of alloys which strongly affects their microstructure and properties, a firm understanding of this process in HEAs is scarce. Here, using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we study the rapid solidification of the multi-principal-element CoFeNiPd alloy as a prototypical single-phase HEA. Our simulations reveal an...

    Abstract
Energy crisis has directed scientific efforts to increase the efficiency of power generation systems. Thermodynamic optimization of MHD (Magneto Hydrodynamic) generator based combined cycles due to their high operating temperatures may seriously reduce exergy destruction and improve the second law efficiency. In this research a combined cycle, comprising of MHD cycle as topping and gas turbine cycle as bottoming cycle has been simulated and analyzed and its pros and cons have been exposed. The first and second law efficiencies have been estimated from the operating pressures and temperatures of the system. To calculate the second law efficiency, the entropy generation of all components of...

Effect of chemical composition and affinity on the short- and medium-range order structures and mechanical properties of Zr-Ni-Al metallic glass

    , Article Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids ; Volume 456 , 2017 , Pages 68-75 ; 00223093 (ISSN) Jafary Zadeh, M ; Tavakoli, R ; Koh, J. J ; Aitken, Z. H ; Zhang, Y. W ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Previous studies have shown that a small variation in the chemical composition of metallic glasses (MGs) can drastically alter their strength and ductility. However, the underlying structural origin and atomistic mechanisms remain unclear. Using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we studied the effect of chemical composition and affinity on the microstructure and deformation behaviour of Zr50Ni50 − xAlx MG by varying the value of x in the range of 5 ≤ x ≤ 25 (at.%). We show that an increase in x is able to strengthen and embrittle the material. In particular, a ductile (homogeneous deformation) to brittle (shear banding) transition occurs at x ~ 15. To reveal the structural origin,...

    Abstract
The aim of this paper was to improve the magnetic properties of magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) strontium hexaferrite substituted with Co 2+-La3+ produced by conventional ceramic forming techniques. The effect on the magnetic properties of varying the composition of the target compound Sr1-xLaxFe12-yCo yO19 and the primary and secondary firing temperatures was investigated. Microstructure studies and XRD phase analysis indicated that optimum values of the remanent magnetization Br and coercive field Hcj were obtained with a primary firing temperature of 1240 C and a final firing temperature of 1180 C, where (x=y)th 1=0.15, (y/x)exp 2=0.75 and the molar ratio of ferric oxide to strontium...

    Abstract
Objective: Epileptic seizures are defined as manifest of excessive and hyper-synchronous activity of neurons in the cerebral cortex that cause frequent malfunction of the human central nervous system. Therefore, finding precursors and predictors of epileptic seizure is of utmost clinical relevance to reduce the epileptic seizure induced nervous system malfunction consequences. Researchers for this purpose may even guide us to a deep understanding of the seizure generating mechanisms. The goal of this paper is to predict epileptic seizures in epileptic rats. Methods: Seizures were induced in rats using pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) model. EEG signals in interictal, preictal, ictal and postictal...

    Abstract
Objective: Epileptic seizure detection is a key step for epilepsy assessment. In this work, using the pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) model, seizures were induced in rats, and ECoG signals in interictal, preictal, ictal, and postictal periods were recorded. The recorded ECoG signals were then analyzed to detect epileptic seizures in the epileptic rats. Methods: Two different approaches were considered in this work: thresholding and classification. In the thresholding approach, a feature is calculated in consecutive windows, and the resulted index is tracked over time and compared with a threshold. The moment the index crosses the threshold is considered as the moment of seizure onset. In the...
