Abstract
Orbital angular momentum (OAM)and the radial quantum number (p) in infinite-dimensional Hilbert space are two degrees of freedom of light which are associated with the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic field. They are attracting a growing interest for their potential in communication applications ranging from classical communication to fundamental tests of quantum mechanics, quantum communication and quantum cryptography. However, a third party trying to eavesdrop information from communication channel and treat channel security , quantum cryptography or quantum key distribution (QKD) is the secure communication method which is based on the quantum mechanical principles can...
Angular Momentum Compensation and Sorting of Optical Modes in Optical Fiber
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Bahrampour, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Farman, Farnaz (Supervisor)
Abstract
Electromagnetic field modes have several degrees of freedom, including polarization, orbital angular momentum, and radial order, which can be described by orthogonal modes. By using all the degrees of freedom in communication, the channel capacity can be increased dramatically. With the aim of increasing the capacity and correcting the errors created along the optical fiber, two important issues have been addressed in this thesis. First, the states propagated in the fiber may be disrupted by many unwanted factors and may not be transmitted correctly. Therefore, measures should be taken to minimize the impact of these factors as much as possible or to compensate for their effects. In the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hajipour, Sepideh (Supervisor) ; Sinaei, Farnaz (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
The processing of brain signals, including the electrocorticogram (ECoG) signal, is widely used in the investigation of neurological diseases. Conventionally, the ECoG signal has frequency components up to the range of 80 Hz. Studies have proven that in some conditions, such as epilepsy, the brain signal includes frequency components higher than 80 Hz, which are called high-frequency oscillations (HFO). Therefore, HFOs are recognized as a biomarker for epilepsy. The aim of this thesis is to review the previous methods of detecting HFOs and to present new methods with greater efficiency in the direction of diagnosis or treatment of epileptic patients. For this purpose, we used the ECoG data...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Massoumian, Farnaz (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
In this thesis a rigorous approach toward systematic quantification of qualitative fea-tures in a three-dimensional (3D) integral imaging is proposed. Incorporating the concepts of sampling rays and sampling points, the first approach is based on geo-metrical optics and quantifies the lateral and depth resolutions of the system within the field-of-view (FOV) and depth-of-field (DOF). The obtained results are justified through experiments. In the next step, the principals of wave optics are employed to measure the lateral and depth resolutions of the system. To this end, the concept of point-spread function is generalized to three-dimensional imaging systems. Through this systematic approach the...

(Supervisor)
Abstract
In this dissertation we will study the problem of transmitting the information of continuous source over fading channel, especially when the transmitter does not have complete information about the channel status. In this situation we will have a tradeoff between the Quality of received packets and the Reliability in transmissions. To increase the quality of packets, for example, we should increase the quantization, and therefore, the transmission rates at the transmitter. But this will also increase the Error Probability at the receiver. It means that if the receiver gets the transmitted packet, it will have a better estimation of information source, but it is likely that error happens and...

Abstract
Tehran Refinery, as an industrial center that has significant water consumption in Tehran, intends to use the flow of water from the treatment plant south of Tehran after final preparation, with the aim of managing water resources and meeting its needs. And it uses a biological activated carbon (BACF) filter to reduce the DOC concentration. In these filters, the removal of organic matter is performed by the adsorption process as well as the biodegradation process by microorganisms grown on activated carbon. The presence of biofilm leads to continuous bio-regeneration of activated carbon during the water treatment process. Therefore, in this study, by examining the performance of these...

The Evolution of the Idea of Progress in Western Thought and a Critical Look at It from an Islamic View
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor)
Abstract
“Progress” is among most frequently used terms in the past few centuries in public discussions, scientific communities as well as economic and sociopolitical policy making. This term has been used in our daily conversations so frequently that it seems to become an intrinsic goal for human beings. However, even a short survey of the introduced meanings of and suggested approaches to achieve “progress” during the last four centuries - since the term was first used- demonstrates that we are faced with a multitude of views from the different - and sometimes contradictory - schools of thoughts. Unfortunately, in recent decades, despite our national desire to “progress”, we have not yet thought...
A bi-objective possibilistic programming model for open shop scheduling problems with sequence-dependent setup times, fuzzy processing times, and fuzzy due dates
, Article Applied Soft Computing Journal ; Volume 12, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 1399-1416 ; 15684946 (ISSN) ; Mahdavi, I ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We are concerned with an open shop scheduling problem having sequence-dependent setup times. A novel bi-objective possibilistic mixed-integer linear programming model is presented. Sequence-dependent setup times, fuzzy processing times and fuzzy due dates with triangular possibility distributions are the main constraints of this model. An open shop scheduling problem with these considerations is close to the real production scheduling conditions. The objective functions are to minimize total weighted tardiness and total weighted completion times. To solve small-sized instances for Pareto-optimal solutions, an interactive fuzzy multi-objective decision making (FMODM) approach, called TH...
Software-level instruction-cache leakage reduction using value-dependence of SRAM leakage in nanometer technologies
, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics) ; Volume 6590 , 2011 , Pages 275-299 ; 03029743 (ISSN); 9783642194474 (ISBN) ; Ishihara, T ; Noori, H ; Stenstrom P ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Within-die process variation is increasing in nanometer-scale process technologies. We observe that the same SRAM cell leaks differently under within-die process variations when storing 0 compared to 1; this difference can be up to 3 orders of magnitude at 60mV variation of threshold voltage (V th). Thus, leakage can be reduced if most often the values that dissipate less leakage are stored in the cache SRAM cells. We take advantage of this fact to reduce instruction-cache leakage by presenting three binary-optimization and software-level techniques: we (i) reorder instructions within basic-blocks so that their bits better match the less-leaky state of their corresponding cache cells, (ii)...

Abstract
A Digital Delta Sigma Modulator (DDSM) is a Finite State Machine (FSM); it is implemented using finite precision arithmetic units and the number of available states is finite. The DDSM always produces a periodic output signal when the input is constant. This paper proposes a novel method of applying periodic dither to a DDSM in order to obtain minimized spurious tones. The effects of adding the pseudorandom dither signal in different stages within the proposed Multi-Stage noise Shaping (MASH) modulator are expressed in the equations, and the results are compared. We present results regarding the periodicity of the quantization noise produced by a MASH modulator with a constant input and a...

Abstract
Purpose - Digital Delta Sigma Modulator (DDSM) is used widely in electronic circuits including Radars, class-D power amplifiers and fractional frequency synthesizers. The purpose of this paper is to propose an implementation for MASH DDSMs named as Multi Modulus Reduced Complexity (MMRC) architecture. Design/methodology/approach - This architecture will use a very simple pseudorandom Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) dither signal with period N-d to randomize the digital MMRC modulator used for fractional frequency synthesizers. Using error masking methodology, the MMRC modulator can decrease the hardware consumption and increase accuracy of the fractional frequency synthesizer. Rules...
