    Abstract
In this study, turbulent natural convection in a square enclosure including one or four hot and cold bodies is numerically investigated in the range of Rayleigh numbers of 1010 < Ra < 1012. The shape of the internal bodies is square or rectangular with the same surface areas and different aspect ratios. In all cases, the horizontal walls of the enclosure are adiabatic, and the vertical ones are isothermal. It is desired to investigate the influence of different shapes and arrangements of internal bodies on the heat transfer rate inside the enclosure with wide-ranging applications such as ventilation of buildings, electronic cooling, and industrial cold box packages. Governing equations,...

    Abstract
In wireless network virtualization, by separating services and infrastructure, and due to new network components, some new challenges appear. In this paper, we consider the competition among multiple mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) for provisioning the required rates for users subscribed to a service provider (SP). To realize this competition, we consider an SP as a beneficiary decision maker component, who can choose which users to be serviced by each MVNO. Since the states between each user and different channels of each MVNO are distinct, MVNOs compete to serve the users with good channel conditions to minimize their costs. Using a multiple non-identical object procurement...

    Abstract
Diurnal volume changes is one of the main factors influencing socket fit in trans-tibial prosthesis and causing pressure problem issues. Embedded bladder liners have been recently a potential approach to deal with this problem. The aim of this technical note was to introduce a new transtibial silicone liner designed based on hybrid socket theory. To make expandability in the liner, an integrated wax structure was constructed over the selected areas of the positive model and then removed after lamination process. In addition, a mechanical system with manual control was designed to fit the liner with the residual limb volume by pumping the water in or out of the liner through connec-tive...

    Abstract
Polar Diagram [4] is a new locus approach for problems processing angles. The solution to many important problems in Computational Geometry requires some kind of angle processing of the data input. Using the Polar Diagrma as preprocessing, exhaustive searches to find those sites with smallest angle become unnecessary. In this paper, we use the notion of kinetic data structure [1][2] to model the dynamic case of polar diagram, i.e we maintain the polar diagram of a set of continuously moving objects in the scene. We show that our proposed structure meets the main criteria of a good KDS. © 2008 Springer-Verlag

    Abstract
The noise generated by the propeller is one of the most important components of the vessels noise. Therefore, reducing this noise will significantly decrease the total noise of the vessel. Underwater noise of vessels has destructive effects on marine life. In addition, this noise affects the health and comfort of the crew and passengers of the ship. Moreover, high noise may cause warships to be detected easily. In this paper, first, common methods of noise reduction, including blade coating, modern propellers, propeller hub modification and ducted propellers are investigated. Then, relevant optimization methods are presented. Next, the effects of the geometric parameters like number of...

Two-phase flow in microchannels with a bounding porous medium

    , Article ASME 2011 9th International Conference on Nanochannels, Microchannels, and Minichannels, ICNMM 2011, 19 June 2011 through 22 June 2011 ; Volume 1 , June , 2011 , Pages 263-268 ; 9780791844632 (ISBN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper investigates numerical simulation of one-dimensional homogeneous adiabatic gas-liquid two-phase flow in a rectangular microchannel with one boundary porous wall under the assumption of hydrophobic condition. Gas enters the microchannel with a uniform velocity and liquid is injected through the porous side wall. The present approach is to simulate water injection effects and developing mechanism of two-phase flow. The modeling and solution of the conservation equations provide pressure drop, vapor quality, void fraction and tow-phase mixture velocity for different water injection rates. The results show that velocity and pressure drop significantly perturbed when the water...

A new approach to thermo-fluid behavior through porous layer of heat pipes

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 25, Issue 3B , 2018 , Pages 1236-1242 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2018
    Abstract
This paper developed a new mathematical model to investigate the heat transfer as well as wick's thickness of a heat pipe. The model was established by conservative equations of continuity, momentum, and energy in the thermal boundary layer. Using a similarity variable, the governing equations were changed to a set of ordinary differential equations and were solved numerically by the forth-order Runge-Kutta method. The flow variables, such as velocity components, wick's thickness, and Nusselt number, were obtained. The results show that the Nusselt number is proportional to the square root of the Darcy-modified Rayleigh number and to the distance from the edge of the condenser surface....

Analysis of vacuum venting in die casting

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 11, Issue 4 , 2004 , Pages 398-404 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2004
    Abstract
The present study is undertaken to calculate the rate of change of pressure and residual air mass in die casting for vacuum venting under choked flow conditions. In these calculations, the influence of friction factor, due to roughness and vent air velocity change through the Mach number, has been taken into account. The results show that there is a critical area ratio below which the pressure and vent inlet Mach number increase with time and above which decrease with time. In addition, for an area ratio less than the critical area, the rate of change of residual air mass seems to be more changed at the late stages than at the early stages of the filling time. The picture is reversed for a...

Scheduling tasks with exponential duration on unrelated parallel machines

    , Article Discrete Applied Mathematics ; Volume 160, Issue 16-17 , November , 2012 , Pages 2462-2473 ; 0166218X (ISSN) Nouri, M ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper introduces a stochastic scheduling problem. In this problem a directed acyclic graphs (DAG) represents the precedence relations among m tasks that n workers are scheduled to execute. The question is to find a schedule Σ such that if tasks are assigned to workers according to Σ, the expected time needed to execute all the tasks is minimized. The time needed to execute task t by worker w is a random variable expressed by a negative exponential distribution with parameter λ wt and each task can be executed by more than one worker at a time. In this paper, we will prove that the problem in its general form is NP-hard, but when the DAG width is constant, we will show that the optimum...

    Abstract
Computing the visibility polygon, VP, of a point in a polygonal scene, is a classical problem that has been studied extensively. In this paper, we consider the problem of computing VP for any query point efficiently, with some additional preprocessing phase. The scene consists of a set of obstacles, of total complexity O(n). We show for a query point q, VP(q) can be computed in logarithmic time using O(n 4) space and O(n 4 logn) preprocessing time. Furthermore to decrease space usage and preprocessing time, we make a tradeoff between space usage and query time; so by spending O(m) space, we can achieve O(n 2 log √ m/n)/√ m)query time, where n 2≤m≤n 4. These results are also applied to...

    Abstract
In this research, the modal parameters of a beam in free-free condition are extracted by performing different experiments in the laboratory. For this purpose, two different techniques are employed. The first methodology is considered as a time domain method in Operational Modal Analysis. The other one is frequency domain impact hammer test which is categorized as an Experimental Modal Analysis method and can be regarded as the most common method in modal analysis. Checking the results obtained by the two methods, one can notice a distinct inconsistency in modal damping ratios extracted by each method. However, based on recent publications on the subject, it can be inferred that the time...

    , Article Materials Research Bulletin ; Volume 42, Issue 9 , 2007 , Pages 1769-1776 ; 00255408 (ISSN) Nouri, E ; Dolati, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The fractal study of thin layer films has been concerned by numerous studies, but it is a novel idea to use this method for interpretation of layer formation during electrocrystallization, simultaneously. In present study, Scharifker's equations were derived for instantaneous and progressive nucleation and 3D growth of hemispherical centers under diffusion-controlled condition to calculate in situ change of fractal dimension of surface. It was assumed that the layer could be formed completely when fractal dimension of surface inclined to 2. Moreover, the fractal analysis of AFM images has confirmed the presumed model. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
Nondestructive tests and evaluations are robust techniques for inspecting different attributes of concrete configuration. However, most nondestructive techniques focused on an aspect of concrete configuration based on comparison to other samples. In this paper, an innovative inverse analysis technique was developed to inspect different attributes of concrete configuration simultaneously. The methodology was based on the scattering feature of the ultrasonic waves during propagation in heterogeneous media. The transition matrix method was employed to determine the scattered wavefield. This method considers the shape of objects, unlike most other numerical methods. Furthermore, a novel...
