Space/query-time tradeoff for computing the visibility polygon

    , Article Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications ; Volume 46, Issue 3 , April , 2013 , Pages 371-381 ; 09257721 (ISSN) Nouri Baygi, M ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the problem of computing the visibility polygon (VP) of a query point q (or VP(q)) in a scene consisting of some obstacles with total complexity of n. We show that the combinatorial representation of VP(q) can be computed in logarithmic time by preprocessing the scene in O( n4logn) time and using O( n4) space. We can also report the actual VP(q) in additional O(|VP(q)|) time. As a main result of this paper, we will prove that we can have a tradeoff between the query time and the preprocessing time/space. In other words, we will show that using O(m) space, we can obtain O( n2log(m/n)/m) query time, where m is a parameter satisfying n2≤m≤ n4. For example, when m= n3,...

New Results on Different Types of Visibility Problems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Nouri Baygi, Mostafa (Author) ; Ghodsi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The study of visibility is at least 100 years old, when in 1913 Brunn proved a theorem about the kernel of a set. By now, visibility has become one of the most studied notions in computational geometry. The reasons are two-fold: 1) such problems arise naturally in areas where computational geometry tools and algorithms _nd applications including: computer graphics, robotics, motion planning, geographic information systems, computer games, computer-aided architecture, and pattern recognition; and where 2) their solutions are required, or serve as building blocks in the development of solutions to other problems, such as shortest paths or motion planning problems. Many natural problem...

Numerical Study of Base Plates under Biaxial Bending

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology baygi, Sajjad (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Base plates as the connecting components of steel structures to their foundations, have a crucial role in the behavior of these structures. In order to limit the thickness of base plates hence their cost within reasonable values, various types of attachments (stiffeners) are normally added to them. In this project 6 different configurations, Models, for the base plate and its attachments were considered and studied through finite element analysis. Each Model was studied under the combination of biaxial moments and a range of compressive loads including 0, 0.05 P/Py, 0.10 P/Py and 0.15 P/Py, where Py is the plastic load of the column. The moment-rotation curves of all models under various...

The combination of KMnO4 oxidation and polymeric flocculation for the mitigation of membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactor

    , Article Separation and Purification Technology ; Volume 159 , 2016 , Pages 124-134 ; 13835866 (ISSN) Zarei baygi, A ; Moslemi, M ; Mirzaei, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2016
    Abstract
KMnO4 oxidation combined with polyelectrolyte (K530CF) flocculation was investigated to mitigate membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactor. The optimum dosages of chemical additives in order to enhance the removal of soluble microbial products (SMPs) were determined. This method was able to reduce the concentration of COD in the effluent to 57.1% and 51.1% lower than those in the experiments in the absence of chemical flocculants and in the presence of polyelectrolyte, respectively. NH3-N removal was improved by combining KMnO4 and K530CF. When KMnO4 was used along with polyelectrolyte, the zeta potential was neutralized to a greater extent which resulted in an improvement in the...

Effect of the Chemical Coagulant and Oxidizer on the Membrane Fouling During the Treatment of Wastewater Using a Membrane Bioreactor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarei Baygi, Ali (Author) ; Moslemi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a combination of conventional activated sludge (CAS) and membrane filtration which owing to its advantages such as high quality effluent and low excess sludge production, has gained increasing application in wastewater treatment. The major drawback of a MBR is the membrane fouling that reduces the permeate flux, which in turn increases the overall operational costs due to high energy requirements. In existing study, the combination of sludge oxidation and coagulation/flocculation addition was investigated for mitigation of membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactor. Oxidation can facilitate sludge flocculation and hence improve the properties of mixed liquor. The...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagheri Baygi, Vahid (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Assessment of existing jacket type offshore platform against environmental wave loading hazard is the central component of this work. Two general approaches exist in this context, deterministic and probabilistic assessment. In this study, a new probabilistic method (reliability analysis) to assess offshore structures under environmental loading (extreme wave) is introduced. Before describing this approach, several necessary elements such as collapse analysis, sampling methods and wave hazard analysis should be investigated. First of all, deterministic assessment of SPD2 platform located in Persian Gulf, which is the case study considered in this dissertation, is conducted utilizing...

    , Article ASME 2011 9th International Conference on Nanochannels, Microchannels, and Minichannels, ICNMM 2011, 19 June 2011 through 22 June 2011 ; Volume 1 , June , 2011 , Pages 263-268 ; 9780791844632 (ISBN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper investigates numerical simulation of one-dimensional homogeneous adiabatic gas-liquid two-phase flow in a rectangular microchannel with one boundary porous wall under the assumption of hydrophobic condition. Gas enters the microchannel with a uniform velocity and liquid is injected through the porous side wall. The present approach is to simulate water injection effects and developing mechanism of two-phase flow. The modeling and solution of the conservation equations provide pressure drop, vapor quality, void fraction and tow-phase mixture velocity for different water injection rates. The results show that velocity and pressure drop significantly perturbed when the water...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 25, Issue 3B , 2018 , Pages 1236-1242 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2018
    Abstract
This paper developed a new mathematical model to investigate the heat transfer as well as wick's thickness of a heat pipe. The model was established by conservative equations of continuity, momentum, and energy in the thermal boundary layer. Using a similarity variable, the governing equations were changed to a set of ordinary differential equations and were solved numerically by the forth-order Runge-Kutta method. The flow variables, such as velocity components, wick's thickness, and Nusselt number, were obtained. The results show that the Nusselt number is proportional to the square root of the Darcy-modified Rayleigh number and to the distance from the edge of the condenser surface....

Analysis of vacuum venting in die casting

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 11, Issue 4 , 2004 , Pages 398-404 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2004
    Abstract
The present study is undertaken to calculate the rate of change of pressure and residual air mass in die casting for vacuum venting under choked flow conditions. In these calculations, the influence of friction factor, due to roughness and vent air velocity change through the Mach number, has been taken into account. The results show that there is a critical area ratio below which the pressure and vent inlet Mach number increase with time and above which decrease with time. In addition, for an area ratio less than the critical area, the rate of change of residual air mass seems to be more changed at the late stages than at the early stages of the filling time. The picture is reversed for a...

    Abstract
In this paper we explore the existence of periodic solutions of a nonautonomous semi-ratio-dependent predator-prey dynamical system with functional responses on time scales. To illustrate the utility of this work, we should mention that, in our results this system with a large class of monotone functional responses, always has at least one periodic solution. For instance, this system with some celebrated functional responses such as Holling type-II (or Michaelis-Menten), Holling type-III, Ivlev, mx (Holling type I), sigmoidal [e.g., Real and mx2/((A + x)(B +x))] and some other monotone functions, has always at least one ω-periodic solution. Besides, for some well-known functional responses...

Feyerabend’s Point of View on Scientific Progress

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yazdani, Homa (Author) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Feyarabend’s philosophy of science is against method and rule such that he believes that “anything goes”. However, he sometimes applies the term “progress”. Reviewing his publications shows that from his point of view, progress is qualitative and relative. So, unlike other philosophers of science Feyarabend ignores the clarification of the concept; subsequently, his applications of the term “progress” are somewhat ambiguous. However, by studying his philosophy, one may realize what should be done to achieve progress in any sense. The affirmative aspect of Feyerabend’s philosophy, while highlights the social and ethical elements, considering his humanitarian outlook as well as his special...
