2020
Abstract
In this paper, we studied the behavior of liquid sheet and jet injection into a low-speed crossflow. Characteristics of primary breakup in a liquid sheet and jet are investigated for circular and rectangular orifices. Effect of dimensionless numbers on primary breakup regimes including jet trajectory, length, height, breakup, and spray characteristics are surveyed by the shadowgraphy technique at ambient pressure and temperature. Tests were performed in the range of 0.8–16.57 for the Weber number, 5–250 for the momentum flux ratio, and 380–1850 for the Reynolds number. This comprehensive study on rectangular jets in crossflow leads to introduce the transition regions of the primary...
Effects of Heart Dynamic Motion on Blood Hemodynamics and LDL Accumulation in Coronary Bifurcation
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, the effect of heart dynamic motion and pulsatile inflow on blood hemodynamics and LDL permeation into the arterial wall in a 3-D coronary artery bifurcation was investigated. To determine the effect of each factor alone and simultaneous effect of both factors i.e. heart dynamic motion and pulsatile inflow, flow simulations were performed in four cases i.e. steady-static, steady-dynamic, pulsatile-static, and pulsatile-dynamic. The results of flow simulations showed that dynamic geometry and pulsatile inflow have considerable impact on temporal variations of wall shear stress (WSS), even though the effect of pulsatile inflow on WSS variation dominates over the effect of...
Experimental Study of Liquid Sheet Breakup in Cross Flow
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Kebriaee, Azadeh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Injecting liquid fuel into the cross flow of air provides high penetration of the liquid, rapid mixing with air, and increased efficiency. This method has widespread applications in the propulsion systems of gas turbines, scramjets, turbine blade cooling, and fuel injection for engine afterburners. One of the design strategies for future aircraft engines is to reduce pollutants using fuel spray into the cross flow instead of direct jet fuel injection and using renewable energy sources. The applications of cross flows include injecting fluid through rotating pressure injectors in exhaust flows, injecting fluid through pressure-rotating injectors in radial injectors, and using slinger...

Abstract
Here, we experimentally investigated the effects of skewness and velocity difference of two Newtonian colliding jets on the formation of a special oscillating liquid sheet pattern with periodic fragmentation, called fishbone, for four liquid sheet regimes known as the triple chain, double chain, close rim, and open rim. We expressed the ranges of the skewness and the velocity difference, where the fishbone pattern was formed for every four regimes. The formation of this special pattern was attributed to the instability of the liquid rim in the past studies. We qualitatively studied the upward and downward directions of the rims branched from the liquid sheet. Besides, the size variations of...
Determination of the Minimum Fluidization Velocity of an Object Immersed in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed through the CFD-DEM Simulations
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fotovat, Farzam (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the unique advantages of fluidized beds for solid mixing and heat transfer, they are widely used for the thermal processing of solid fuel particles. In practice, such systems are composed of non-conventional fuel particles such as coal or biomass, which are completely different in shape, size, and density from the bed material such as sand. In such systems, correct understanding of the main fluidization parameters such as the minimum fluidization velocity (Umf) of the bed components plays a key role in the successful design and control of the system. However, the onset of fluidization of irregular particles is not clear as it may vary depending on the physical properties of the...

Abstract
Ionic liquids are a significant type of organic salts with attractive and superior physicochemical features for employing in a number of chemical processes. Ionic liquids include one large and asymmetric cationic or anionic functional group. The properties of cationic functional group are almost similar and it is main motivation of this study. In the present investigation, we extended various semi-empirical correlations to predict some temperature-based properties of ionic liquids mixture (IL-mixture). These properties are density, viscosity, surface tension and bubble point pressure. In the case of IL-mixture density, modified Rackett equation and Taylor equation with three scenarios,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Moeini Aghtaie, Moein (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years, various studies have been conducted focusing on the optimization and scheduling of energy hubs (EH). EH optimization is important because it tries to create synergy in the energy supply system by considering the relationships between energy carriers. For this purpose, various algorithms such as analytical methods (linear programming) and evolutionary and heuristic algorithms have been used. Also, recently, various studies have addressed the applications of reinforcement learning for energy hub management. In this study, a hybrid model for energy hub management has been developed by combining classical linear models (Known as white-box models) and reinforcement learning...
Experimental Study of Hydraulic Characteristics of Perforated Pipes in Submerged Area
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jamali, Mir Mosaddegh (Supervisor)
Abstract
In small settling tanks, the sludges can be removed using perforated pipes. In this method the pipe is placed in the depth of a fluid and the lateral inflow through perforations lead to the outlet. Since there are few researches about hydraulic characteristic of perforated pipes, this research will investigate the hyadraulic characteristic of these pipes experimentally. One of the main objectives of these pipes is to use the entire lenghte of the pipe and also provide the uniform distribution of inflow. In the past studies, it was found out that inflow mostly comes through downstream perforations. The objective of this research is to find the distribution of discharge along the perporated...

Abstract
Regarding the ever-increasing usage of text generation and analysis in Natural Language Processing field, Language Modeling and Masked Language Modeling have been recently one of the most frequent tasks. Besides, many pretrained models such as BERT have been proposed due to the lack of rich datasets and computational resources among researchers. These models can be finetuned on other datasets in downstream tasks. Although these Transformer-based deep neural networks have performed perfectly in many problems, they still have some shortcomings in a few tasks.Furthermore, structured data like graphs have been recently used extensively in Natural Language Processing and researchers have taken...

Abstract
The corrosion behavior of different grades of commercial aluminum such as AA1040, AA5083, AA6060 and AA7075 in ZnO-containing 4 M NaOH has been determined by using open circuit potential-time measurements (OCP), galvanostatic and potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) reveal that ZnO produces the inhibition effect by the formation of a zinc-containing deposit layer on the surface of aluminum electrodes. Although the influence of zincating on the performance of aluminum alloys and considering the amount of alloying elements such as zinc, magnesium and...
