Abstract
This paper proposes effective approach for determining appropriate crowbar resistance value to be able to improve the brushless doubly fed induction generator ride through capability during any asymmetrical voltage dip scenarios. The brushless DFIG has great potential for wind power plants particularly in offshore applications where maintenance is a major concern. Dynamic behavior of the machine is studied using two axis model and a more precise equivalent circuit model is extracted for analyzing machine behavior under fault conditions. Important limits and constraints in the use of crowbar are identified and discussed in detail. It is shown that large crowbar values can lead to considerable...

Abstract
Brushless Doubly Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) has been recently proposed to be used in variable speed wind turbines. This paper intends to investigate the influence of certain model simplifications to obtain a reduced-order model of a wind turbine with BDFIG suitable for transient studies. To achieve this goal, small signal analysis is performed for a recently manufactured 250 kVA BDFIG to obtain system modes and their participation factors. Identifying highly damped modes, influences of neglecting dynamics of their participated states are studied through time-domain simulation in MATLAB/Simulink

Abstract
The cause of about 10% of faults in induction machines is related to the rotor part. In this paper, an analytical method for general modeling of brushless doubly-fed machines (BDFMs) with broken rotor loops and end ring is presented. The approach is based on calculation of resistance and inductance matrices through the winding function of the machine, so the assumption of sinusoidal MMF is not needed. It is also shown that a fault in a loop can lead to faults in other parts of the rotor. To validate the method a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink is performed based on the D180-frame prototype BDFM

Abstract
In the presented paper, an analytical model is developed for calculation of the air gap magnetic flux density in the axial-flux surface-mounted PM machines. The slotting effect is taken into account in the air gap magnetic flux distribution, accurately. The main novelty of this study is replacing the stator teeth by some surface currents at the border of the removed stator teeth. The uniqueness theorem is applied to find the surface currents. The two-dimensional (2D) field solution in the slotless machine is solved easily by separation of variables method. The multi-slice quasi-3D method is applied for taking 3D nature of field distribution into account. In addition, the back-EMF, armature...

Abstract
Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) is a machine which incorporates the robustness of the squirrel cage induction machine while having the speed and power factor control of a synchronous machine. A special kind of rotor called Nested-Loop rotor plays an important part in the BDFM, coupling the two stator fields. In future BDFM will share a large part in wind power market. This paper presents a mathematical model of Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) based on Stator Flux Orientation (SFO) in the positive and negative reference frames under unbalanced grid voltage conditions

Abstract
Harmonic information is necessary tools in the estimation of motors life and performance. The conventional expression of harmonic amount is carried out by total Harmonic distortion. This distortion factor is only related to amplitude of harmonics while the motor loss is affected by frequency domain of them. In this paper a new definition of this factor has been presented. This definition includes the frequency of harmonics as well as their amplitudes. Experimental results verify the validity of this new definition

Abstract
In this paper, a new structure for the rotor of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) is introduced to reduce the machine's torque ripple. The ripple has a considerable effect on the machine start up. At the first section of the paper, analytical expressions for the air gap permeance distribution, the air gap MMF distribution, cogging torque and back EMF are presented. Then, the effects of skewing the rotor loops are analyzed. Finally, the relation between non-skewed quantities and their values in skewed coordinate are introduced

Abstract
This paper is aimed at proposing a new hybrid method for the islanding detection of distributed-generation (DG) units. Hybrid method operation is based on the combination of an active and a passive method, for which the optimized Sandia frequency shift (SFS) method is used as the selected active method, and rate of change of frequency relay (ROCOF) is used as the passive method. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique on islanding detection, several simulation studies based on IEEE 1547 and UL1741 anti-islanding test requirements are carried out. The evaluation of simulation results reveals that the control system, based on the proposed hybrid algorithm, meets the...

Abstract
Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator has attractive features to be the first choice in next generation of wind generators. However, its efficiency and power-to-weight ratio are slightly lower in comparison to induction machine with the same rating. Considerable part of these imperfections arises from the rotor design, which produces magnetic field with considerable undesirable spatial harmonics. This paper proposes a novel rotor configuration to reduce spatial harmonic distortion of air-gap magnetic field as well as improving some drawbacks of the conventional structure, including unequal magnitudes of rotor bar currents, teeth saturation at low average air gap magnetic fields, high core...

Then the equivalent space and time harmonic circuits are established, using basic equivalent circuit. Finally, the effects of these harmonics on the torque-speed characteristic are studied

Abstract
In this paper, a detailed analytical model for dynamic analysis of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine is presented. The model is capable to predict the machine behavior under different modes of operation including: simple induction mode, cascade mode and synchronous mode, both with and without winding faults and unbalanced excitations. The proposed approach employs the basic principles of the generalized harmonic theory for calculating self inductances and mutual inductances of circuits with any distribution of conductors. Dynamic equations of modified coupled-circuit method are then solved to compute the currents flowing in the stator windings and rotor loops

Abstract
Supplying non-linear loads causes increased losses in transformers which eventually leads to their reduced life spans. Therefore, transformers are derated in order to protect them against premature loss of life. To do this, load losses including ohmic loss and winding eddy current (WEC) loss need to be estimated. This study suggests an improved analytical approach using finite element method (FEM) which includes all material characteristics and geometrical structures in order to calculate WEC loss under non-sinusoidal load current in each winding individually. By adopting this procedure, harmonic loss factor as a dominant parameter in transformers derating is estimated. By emphasising the...

Abstract
The increasing application of non-linear loads in power system causes additional losses in transformers resulting in premature damage. Manufactures and users of transformers realise the importance of this phenomenon and it is vital to adopt a procedure to prevent it thereby enhancing the reliability of power system. To achieve this, the most common method is derating of transformers. This paper intends to review derating of transformers under nonsinusoidal operation, for which all available approaches are classified into four major methods including IEEE recommended, analytical, experimental and finite elements based method. For each method, the fundamental theory, significant factors...

Abstract
Doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) are widely used in wind power systems; hence their reliability model is an important consideration for production assessment and economic analysis of wind energy conversion systems. However, to date mutual influences of reliability analysis, production estimations and economic assessments of wind farms have not been fully investigated. This study proposes a reliability model for DFIG wind turbines considering their subcomponent failure rates and downtimes. The proposed production estimation algorithm leads to an economic assessment for wind farms. A comprehensive spare parts management procedure is then presented in the study. As a case study,...
