Heading angle Observability Enhancement in Visual Inertial Navigation via addition of Magnetometer for GPS Denied Environment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pahlevani, Ali (Author) ; Pourtakdoust, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a method is presented for improving the observability of the heading angle in a UAV when using the Visual-Inertial navigation algorithm MSCKF by adding a magnetometer sensor. The proposed algorithm serves as a complementary extension to the primary algorithm, and efforts have been made to seamlessly integrate the magnetometer sensor into the primary algorithm to allow for easy modifications to the sensor's characteristics and to observe the resulting output in system simulations. Improving the observability of the heading angle will lead to an enhancement in the overall system state estimation. To achieve this, a new update stage is added to the existing algorithm....

Surface and interface effects on torsion of eccentrically two-phase fcc circular nanorods: Determination of the surface/interface elastic properties via an atomistic approach

    , Article Journal of Applied Mechanics, Transactions ASME ; Volume 78, Issue 1 , October , 2011 , Pages 0110111-01101111 ; 00218936 (ISSN) Pahlevani, L ; Shodja, H. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The effect of surface and interface elasticity in the analysis of the Saint-Venant torsion problem of an eccentrically two-phase fcc circular nanorod is considered; description of the behavior of such a small structure via usual classical theories cease to hold. In this work, the problem is formulated in the context of the surface/interface elasticity. For a rigorous solution of the proposed problem, conformal mapping with a Laurent series expansion are employed together. The numerical results well illustrate that the torsional rigidity and stress distribution corresponding to such nanosized structural elements are significantly affected by the size. In order to employ surface and interface...

    Abstract
The effect of surface and interface elasticity in analysis of the Saint-Venant torsion problem of an eccentrically two-phase circular nanobar is considered. The problem is formulated in the context of Gurtin's surface elasticity. For a rigorous solution of the proposed problem, conformal mapping together with a Laurent series expansion are employed. At the nanoscales the usual classical theories cease to hold and the corresponding results deteriorate. The numerical results well illustrate that the torsional rigidity of the mentioned nanosized structural elements are significantly affected by the size. Some applications of the given results can be contemplated in the design of micro/nano...

    Size-Dependent Elastic Properties of Ultra-Thin Objects Containing a Nano-Inclusion or a Nano-Inhomogeneity

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Pahlevani, Ladan (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The broad range of applicability of nano devices particularly in electronics, optoelectronics, and micro/ nano-electro- mechanical systems has drawn the attentions of the industrial and scientific communities of various disciplines. This work is devoted to study the effect of surface and interface elasticity in the analysis of the mechanical behavior of ultra-thin objects in the presence of some statical or dynamical loadings. Based on the fact that the surface-volume ratio increases in nano-scale, description of the behavior of such a small structure via usual classical theories, which generally neglect the surface/interface effect, ceases to hold. In the present study, first, a...

    Abstract
Certain physical and mechanical phenomena within ultra-thin face-centered cubic (fcc) films containing common types of interacting point defects are addressed. An atomic-scale lattice statics in conjunction with many-body interatomic potentials suitable for binary systems is conducted to analyze the effects of the depth on the: (1) formation energy and layer-by-layer displacements due to the presence of vacancy-octahedral self-interstitial atom (OSIA) ensemble, and (2) elastic fields as well as the free surface shape in the case of vacancy-dopant interaction. Moreover, the effects of the inter-defect spacing for various depths are also examined. To ensure reasonable accuracy and numerical...

Rheological properties and the micromodel investigation of nanosilica gel-reinforced preformed particle gels developed for improved oil recovery

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 192 , 2020 Aqcheli, F ; Salehi, M. B ; Pahlevani, H ; Taghikhani, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Preformed particle gels (PPGs) in solutions have been widely used to suppress excess water production in mature oil reservoirs and, in turn, to improve the amount of oil recovery in brown oil fields. In this study, PPG solutions were meticulously formulated and synthesized in order to be utilized in harsh environments in terms of pressure, temperature, pH, and salinity from a free radical polymerization process. In this work, nanosilica gel at different weight percentages was added to improve the mechanical and thermal stability properties of the PPG at harsh condition: high pressure, temperature, and strain. Moreover, the effects of nanosilica gel at various concentrations, ranging from 0.0...

Synthesis of a custom-made suspension of preformed particle gel with improved strength properties and its application in the enhancement of oil recovery in a micromodel scale

    Abstract
The objective of this work is to develop a new Preformed Particle Gel (PPG) suspension to enhance oil production and monitor water production in a porous medium on micromodel scale. To achieve the above goal, the following synthetic method was used. At the outset, the PPG samples were synthesized with polyethylene amine (PEI) as a crosslinker, 2,2′-Azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH) as initiator and acrylamide (AM) and 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) monomers to improve the strength properties of PPGs by the radical polymerization method. Also, to characterize the micro and macro structural the samples, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM),...
