Simulation of LAD-LCX Bifurcation Hemodynamics of Coronary Artery Disease to Design an Effective Bypass Graft
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Pakravan, Hossein Ali (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, three recent predictors of severity of coronary stenosis including fractional flow reserve (FFR), instantaneous wave free-ratio (iFR) and coronary flow reserve (CFR), are calculated for a number of patient-specific models of left coronary arteries. These patients are admitted to Tehran heart center. The main aim is presenting the optimum numerical and clinical detection technique to assess the severity of coronary stenosis. The effect of geometric features of stenosis is studied on the results of the FFR, iFR, and CFR in order to determine their accuracy. It is observed that CFR does not have a good estimate of the amount of disease. But, iFR, as a less risky test than FFR,...
Temperature dependence study of nonocontact AFM images using molecular dynamics simulations [electronic resource]
, Article Int. Journal of Modern Physics ; 2012, Vol. 5, pp. 418-432 ; Meghdar, Ali ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The effect of temperature on the noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) surface imaging is investigated with the aid of molecular dynamics (MD) analysis based on the Sutton-Chen (SC) interatomic potential. Particular attention is devoted to the tip and sample flexibility at different temperatures. When a gold coated probe is brought close to the Au (001) surface at high temperatures, the tip and surface atoms are pulled together and their distance becomes smaller. The tip and sample atoms displacement varies in the different environment temperatures and this leads to the different interaction forces. Along this line, to study the effect of temperature on the resulting images, we have...
Privacy Preserving Communication Schemes for Light Clients in Blockchain Networks: Algorithms and Analysis
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Maddah Ali, Mohammad Ali (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Lightweight clients are a type of blockchain users who do not store all the blocks in the blockchain due to limited resources. These users store only a small part of each block and when needed, request transactions from full nodes that store the entire blockchain. These users have no role in block validation and only want to receive transactions related to their addresses with proof of the inclusion in the block from full nodes.Since light clients rely on full nodes for receiving transactions, their privacy against full nodes is important. The current implementation of Bitcoin uses Bloom filters for privacy, but this offers very little privacy to the users. In this thesis, we study the...
Overlay routing Architectures for Massively Multiuser Virtual Environments
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Alavi, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Multi-participant virtual environments are network applications that simulate the experience of real-time interaction among multiple usersdistributed all over the internet In order to share the common sense of time and place, multiple entities interacting in the shared virtual environment should become aware of the modification to the shared environment, or the result of on the other objects interactions shortly after such events occur. This is achieved through the distribution of update messages. As the number of users and entities increases, there is a considerable increase in the amount of update messages exchanged among the users and entities. This is considered as one of the most...
Multiscale Modeling of Coronary Blood Flow and Effects on Endothelial Cells
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Saeedi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Atherosclerosis in coronary arteries is one of the most important topics due to its high prevalence and the importance of these arteries for supplying blood to the heart. The morphology of endothelial cells (ECs) is an independent index for determining the atheroprone sites. The ECs show a regular elongated and aligned configuration to the blood flow, at the atheroprotected regions; on the other hand, at the atheroprone regions, the cells have a polygonal, randomly oriented morphology. The thesis intended to propose a method for coronary artery simulation, which is able to determine the atheroprone sites regarding the ECs morphology. In addition, the attempts were made to investigate the...

Abstract
Optimisation is ubiquitous and essential in almost all areas of engineering and computer science for the design and analysis of efficient systems and algorithms. Indeed, many engineering problems can be cast as optimisation problems, in which a decision must be made upon certain control parameters in order to maximise revenue or minimise an incurred cost in designing a system. Whereas deterministic optimization problems are formulated with known parameters, real-world problems almost invariably include parameters which are unknown at the time a decision is made. Stochastic optimisation is the approach for modelling optimization problems that involve uncertainty, and it has attracted a lot of...
Document Biped hopping control bazsed on spring loaded inverted pendulum model [electronic resource]
, Article Int. Journal of Humanoid Robotics ; Vol. 7, No. 2, pp. 263-280, 2010 ; Jafari, Farid ; Meghdari, Ali ; Sohrabpour, Saeed ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Human running can be stabilized in a wide range of speeds by automatically adjusting muscular properties of leg and torso. It is known that fast locomotion dynamics can be approximated by a spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) system, in which leg is replaced by a single spring connecting body mass to ground. Taking advantage of the inherent stability of SLIP model, a hybrid control strategy is developed that guarantees a stable biped locomotion in sagittal plane. In the presented approach, nonlinear control methods are applied to synchronize the biped dynamics and the spring-mass dynamics. As the biped center of mass follows the mass of the mass-spring model, the whole biped performs a...
Using geometrical routing for overlay networking in MMOGs
, Article Multimedia Tools and Applications ; Volume 45, Issue 1-3 , October , 2009 , Pages 61-81 ; Pakravan, M. R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Shirmohammadi, Sh. (Shervin) ; Alavi, H. (Hossein) ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
At a first glance, transmitting update information to a geographic region in the virtual space seems to be an attractive primitive in Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming (MMOG) applications where players are constantly moving and need to send updates to their neighbors who are in the same region of the virtual space. The system would become more scalable if entities did not need to keep track of each other or send messages directly to one another. Rather, an entity could just send a message to a specific region in the virtual space (its area of effect), as opposed to sending packets to specific IP addresses, significantly reducing tracking and routing overhead. Fundamentally speaking, update...

Design and Dynamical Modelling and Control of a Micro-swimmer with High Maneuverability
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nejat, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Meghdari, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Up to now many different mechanisms have been proposed for a swimming micro robot, but most of the previously designed micro robots are not able to perform three- dimensional maneuver and the motion of the proposed swimmers are limited along a straight line or in a plane. Some important issues that must be ruled in designing micro robots include: reduced number of actuators, high maneuverability, high motion controllability and elimination of lateral drift. In this study the aim is to design a micro swimmer with the aforementioned capabilities as much as possible. In this regard, many different ideas based on the quadrotor motion, flagellated bacteria and spiral flagellated bacteria, Fish...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Nejat, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Water plays an essential role in the daily lives of humans, plants, and animals. Due to the lack of safe water on the planet, in recent years there have been many challenges in the field of water treatment, which has made water desalination technology always one of the most advanced technologies. The most advanced technology in this field is the use of nanotechnology in water and wastewater treatment, especially the use of Membrane processes such as reverse osmosis. Unlike conventional reverse osmosis membranes, nanoporous membranes can ensure rapid water transfer during the displacement process. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce new monolayers that have an incredible performance in...
Gender Earnings Gap Among Tapsi Ride-share Drivers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Some have argued that two-way markets, such as the online rideshar-ing platforms, which divide their services into different segments and provides each of these segments to the independent workforce based on an articulate and transparent income criterion, are more attrac-tive to women, which in turn, can reduce income disparities. This is due to the flexibility in working hours as well as the transparency of the labor payment process. In this study, using micro-data related to the trips of male and female drivers of Tap30, we find out that there is a 2.2 % gender earning gap between drivers. Furthermore, the fac-tors affecting the possible income difference are identified. On the one hand,...
Interference Management Approaches in the Presence of Physical Limitations
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Hossein Khalaj, Babak (Supervisor) ; Maddah Ali, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, we consider multiple-antenna K-user interference channels with backhaul collaboration in one side (among the transmitters or among the receivers) and investigate the trade-off between the rate in the channel versus the communication load in the backhaul. In this investigation, we focus on a first order approximation result, where the rate of the wireless channel is measured by the degrees of freedom (DoF) per user, and the load of the backhaul is measured by the entropy of backhaul messages per user normalized by log of transmit power, at high power regimes. This trade-off is fully characterized for the case of even values of K, and approximately characterized for the case of...

Abstract
In this paper, we consider $K$ -user interference channels with $M$ antennas per node and with backhaul collaboration in one side (among the transmitters or among the receivers), for $M,Kin mathbb {N}$ , and investigate the tradeoff between the rate in the channel versus the communication load in the backhaul. In this investigation, each node is equipped with $M$ antennas and we focus on a first order approximation result, where the rate of the wireless channel is measured by the degrees of freedom (DoF) per user, and the load of the backhaul is measured by the entropy of backhaul messages per user normalized by $log $ of transmit power, at high power regimes. This tradeoff is fully...
Debismuthizing of Lead with Alkaline and alkaline Earth Elements
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Yoozbashizadeh, Hossein (Supervisor) ; kaflou, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Lead produced by pyrometallurgy method has a number of impurities. Most of these eimpurities can easily be removed, but this property does not apply in the case of bismuth. Since chemical properties of bismuth are close to the lead, refining of bismuth below 250 ppm is difficult and expensive. Because of problems related to electrochemical discussion of the batteries, bismuth it is possible to reduce below than 20 ppm. Jollivet and Dittmer process is capable of reducing bismuth below 20 ppm. As the main goal of this project is to reduce bismuth to small amounts, Jollivet process was used. Potassium needed for Jollivet process, produced by electrolysis of Potassium chloride salt....

Investigating the Effect of Freight Salons on Road Freight Prices
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, the price effects of freight announcement salons in the road freight transportation market of Iran have been investigated. The road freight market in Iran has witnessed numerous protests by drivers in recent years. One of the main demands of this group was to establish freight salons in terminals lacking that. Contrary to the opinion of drivers, who believe that freight salons increase parity and remove intermediaries, freight companies believe that this policy reduces competition and quality and increases freight prices. In this study, using the information of waybills (“Baarnameh”) at transaction level, we show that the presence of freight announcement salons increases...

Modeling Online Taxi Drivers’ Decision Making in Accepting or Rejecting Ride Offers
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Online ride-hailing platforms aim to match drivers and riders instantly by receiving ride requests from riders and sending them to drivers nearby. However, the low acceptance rate of offers by drivers leads to friction in the process of driver and rider matching. Various factors influence drivers' decisions to accept or reject offers. Specifically, drivers are more likely to turn down a ride offer when they know that by rejecting it, they can quickly receive another offer or find a passenger traditionally. To examine the factors influencing drivers' decisions in online ride-hailing markets, we focus on the behavior of drivers employed by Tapsi ride-hailing platform, and by specifying a...
Estimating Price Elasticity of Labor Supply in Ride-sharing Markets (Case Study: Tapsi)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Because of flexibility in labor supply, ride-sharing market is a good platform for estimating drivers’ working hours in response to hourly earning changes. In this research using ride-sharing markets’ data and controlling for geographic effects and time and individual fixed effects, we have estimated 0.0129 for price elasticity of drivers’ working hours. Literature has focused on estimating the elasticity in time horizons shorter than a day (non-stop active hours), while in this paper we have also estimated the elasticity in daily horizon. We have also analyzed the heterogeneity of different types of drivers (Full-Time or Part-Time, Tehran or non-Tehran Plates, Gender and Experience) in...
