Abstract
This paper describes a novel Direct Torque Control (DTC) method for adjustable speed Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) drives which is supplied by a two-level Space Vector Modulation (SVM) voltage source inverter (DTC-SVM) in the rotor circuit. The inverter reference voltage vector is obtained by using input-output feedback linearization control and a DFIM model in the stator a-b axes reference frame with stator currents and rotor fluxes as state variables. Moreover, to make this nonlinear controller stable and robust to most varying electrical parameter uncertainties, a two layer recurrent Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to estimate a certain function which shows the machine...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mostafavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
The successful development and implementation of a knowledge management system requires principles and instructions compatible with the organization. In the absence of essential and domestic components of a given organization, the process of knowledge management implementation will fail to be successfully completed. There are now various models for the implementation of knowledge management; however, these models only recommend general strategic guidelines, hardly offering any specific strategic plans as to how organizations can successfully and effectively implement knowledge management. Since the promotion of productivity is the ultimate goal of knowledge management, the present research...
Coordinated Scheduling of Power and Natural Gas Systems Considering Demand Uncertainty
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
The everyday increasing electricity consumption of household and industrial sectors across the world, and also the limited generation capacity and fuel supplies has led electricity companies, whether in private or government sectors, to focus deliberately on power generation planning, its costs, risks and constraints Because of many reasons including high efficiency, low cost of capital investment, expeditious permitting, and operation flexibility of gas-fired generating units, electricity companies prefer them to old ones like coal-fired or oil-fired generating units. Thus natural gas has gained a significant share in the portfolio of electricity generation fuel resources, and it is...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Frounchi, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Mollaabasi, Payam (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In the past decades, hydrogels have been used as an adsorbent with high potential to remove pollutants in water. Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymer networks that have the ability to absorb and store water and water-soluble compounds due to the presence of hydrophilic functional groups in their structure. Different particles with unique characteristics can be used to increase the efficiency of hydrogel absorption. Based on the type of pollutant, hydrogels are divided into three different forms, including particles, films and nanocomposites. In this research, the absorption effect of metal cations as well as the absorption kinetics of polyvinyl pyrrolidine-based hydrogels, sodium...

Abstract
In this project, modeling, simulation, and control of the Saccharomyces Cerevisiae were studied. In the first section, simulation and control of a structural model of saccharomyces Cerevisiae were performed. Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) as a model-independent controller and Global Linearization Controller (GLC) as a model-based controller were designed. Additionally, two types of Kalman filters were designed to predict all states of the structural model: 1-Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), 2- Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). As a concise explanation, the control action of the GLC is a function of all states of the model, and since that measuring all metabolites is not practical, the EKF and UKF...

Abstract
The energetics and kinetic energy barriers of vacancy/atom exchange in a 37-atom truncated octahedron Ag-Pt binary cluster in the Ag-rich range of compositions are investigated via a first-principles atomistic approach. The energy of the local minima obtained considering various distributions of a single vacancy and a few Pt atoms within the cluster and the energy barriers connecting them are evaluated using accurate density-functional calculations. The effects of the simultaneous presence of a vacancy and Pt atoms are found to be simply additive when their distances are larger than first-neighbors, whereas when they can be stabilizing at low Pt content due to the release of strain by the...

Abstract
Used lubricating oil (ULO) is a heavy mixture of various hydrocarbons and needs to be treated before discharging. Considering ULO nature, it is more favorable to recover lighter hydrocarbon cuts from ULO, which not only improves the whole process economically, but also prevents the emission of hardly decomposable hydrocarbons into the environment. In this research, the potential of pyrolysis method for ULO recovery was studied. Furthermore, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP), γ- Fe2O3 and ZnO nanoparticles were used to improve the kinetics of the process and their impacts on the final product quality were evaluated. Based on the results, adding nanomaterials increased the tendency to produce gas...

Abstract
The applications of Nomex honeycomb composite (NHC) structures in aerospace, automotive and defence sectors have been significantly increasing due to their high compressive strength, hexagonal thin-walled structure, ultra-light weight and excellent thermal resistance. Specific applications include composite sandwich structures in helicopter propellers, satellite cabins, aeroplane floors, engine cowls, wings and nacelles. Accuracy of the machined surface of NHC structures is required for adhesive bonding with face-sheets. Conventional machining processes generate machining defects in terms of tearing, damaged cell walls, burr formation, delamination and poor surface quality that result in...

Abstract
A robotic system was designed and developed to perform the camera handling task during laparoscopic surgery. The system employs an effective low cost mechanism, with a minimum number of actuated DOFs, enabling spherical movement around a remote centre of motion positioned at the the insertion point of the laparoscopic stem. Kinematic analysis showed a high manipulability measure for the system, with the left/right movements directly governed by rotation of the first rotary actuator, and zoom and up/down movements by the simultaneous motions of the linear and second rotary actuators. A prototype of the robot was developed for practical use in an operating room environment. Hands-free operator...

Abstract
Image based registration of rigid objects has been frequently addressed in the literature to obtain an object's motion parameters. In this paper, a new approach of joint segmentation-rigid registration, within the variational framework of the phase field approximation of the Mumford-Shah's functional, is proposed. The defined functional consists of two Mumford-Shah equations, extracting the discontinuity set of the reference and target images due to a rigid spatial transformation. Multiscale minimization of the proposed functional after finite element discretization provided a sub-pixel, robust algorithm for edge extraction as well as edge based rigid registration. The implementation...

Abstract
In this study, the influence of CO2 and CH4 on the performance and selectivity of Co-Ru/Al2O3 catalyst is investigated by injection of these gases (0-20 vol.% of feed) to the feed stream. The effect of temperature and feed flow rate are also inspected. The results show that low amounts of CO2 in the feed stream do not change the catalyst activity, but increasing the amount of CO2 (more than 10 vol.%), causes the CO conversion to decrease and the selectivity of heavy components to increase. Methane acts as an inert gas and does not affect the catalyst performance. Increasing feed flow rate has a negative effect on both CO conversion and heavy component selectivity. By raising the temperature,...
Microstructure and texture development during friction stir processing of Al–Mg alloy sheets with TiO2 nanoparticles [electronic resource]
, Article Materials Science and Engineering: A ; 27 May 2014, Volume 605, Pages 108–118 ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Kokabi, A. H ; Nosko, M ; Simancik, F ; Svec, P ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Aluminum matrix nanocomposites were fabricated by friction stir processing of Al–Mg alloy sheets with pre-placed TiO2 nanoparticles at a concentration of 2 to 6 vol%. Microstructural studies showed that solid state reactions between the metal matrix and TiO2 particles caused in situ formation of MgO and Al3Ti nanophases with an average size ~50 nm. These nanophases were homogenously distributed in an ultra-fine grain structure (0.2–2 µm) of the base metal. The results of pole figures evaluation obtained by electron back scattered diffraction studies revealed that the random orientation of initial annealed sheet was changed to components near to shear and silver texture in the friction stir...
