Mechanistic Studies of Improved Oil Recovery under Forced Gravity Drainage GAGD Process

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rostami, Behzad (Author) ; Kharrat, Riyaz (Supervisor) ; Ghotbi, Cyrus (Supervisor) ; Pooladi Darvish, Mehran (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Gas-oil displacement, when stabilized by gravity forces leads to high displacement efficiency, as manifested in high recovery factor associated with gas-cap drive and gravity drainage. The main objective of this research is improved understanding of drainage behavior and changes in flow properties when the importance of viscous, gravity and capillary forces varies. The influence of interplaying between controlling forces on relative permeabilities is also studied. Another objective of this work is to study effect of wettability on recovery under forced gravity drainage. To study drainage behavior under various dominant driving/resistive forces, a number of forced gravity drainage experiments...

The dependency of relative permeability on dominated flow regimes under gas gravity assisted flow

    , Article Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization and Environmental Effects ; Volume 33, Issue 2 , Oct , 2011 , Pages 101-113 ; 15567036 (ISSN) Rostami, B ; Kharrat, R ; Pooladi Darvish, M ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Gas-oil relative permeability is essential for performance predictions of reservoirs with solutions for gas drive, gas cap expansion, or gas injection. The nature of flow in reservoir is determined by the interplay of relative permeability and viscous, gravity, and capillary forces. Displacement experiments of the gas-oil system are performed on long core scale models by varying the petrophysical properties and flow conditions. Experiments are conducted in situations where capillary, gravity, and viscous forces are comparable. The effect of destabilized front velocity on relative permeability and residual saturation is investigated. The results indicate that the relative permeability varies...

Identification of fluid dynamics in forced gravity drainage using dimensionless groups

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 83, Issue 3 , July , 2010 , Pages 725-740 ; 01693913 (ISSN) Rostami, B ; Kharrat, R ; Pooladi Darvish, M ; Ghotbi, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A number of forced gravity drainage experiments have been conducted using a wide range of the physical and operational parameters, wherein the type, length, and permeability of the porous medium as well as oil viscosity and injection rate were varied. Results indicate that an increase in the Bond number has a positive effect on oil recovery whereas the capillary number has an opposite effect. These trends were observed over a two-order of magnitude change in the value of the dimensionless groups. Furthermore, it was found that use of each number alone is insufficient to obtain a satisfactory correlation with recovery. A combined dimensionless group is proposed, which combines the effect of...

Assessing the explanatory power of naturalism in addressing ultimate questions

    , Article Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta, Filosofiia i Konfliktologiia ; Volume 37, Issue 2 , 2021 , Pages 217-228 ; 25422278 (ISSN) Darvish Aghajani, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A typical scientist has no responsibility other than to explain how a natural event occurred. However, when a philosopher asks about the conditions under which a scientist’s explanation is true, he is, in fact, raising an ultimate question, the concept which Karl Popper used for the first time. Answering this question requires that no elements are neglected in the explanation, and no significant factors in the explanation are overlooked. In other words, in explaining a phenomenon, at any level of its explanation, there should be no remainder. These requirements can be achieved through the full explanation. In the present article, by drawing on concepts such as theory-ladenness of...

Metaphysical necessity in the neo-sadraian school and assessment of necessitarian theories of the laws of nature

    , Article Teorie Vedy / Theory of Science ; Volume 43, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 33-57 ; 12100250 (ISSN) Darvish Aghajani, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Czech Academy of Sciences  2021
    Abstract
To differentiate between the laws of nature and accidental generalizations, we must adopt a view of necessity that is capable of being realized in relationships existing among natural objects. In neo-Sadraian Islamic philosophy, metaphysical necessity is accepted as part of the cause-effect relationship. This paper compares the neo-Sadraian interpretation of necessity and necessitarian theories about the laws of nature, particularly essentialism and universal theory. By resorting to specific forms al-shûrat al-naw’iyyah, the origin of the essential properties of natural objects, I argue that neo-Sadraians have proposed a perspective on metaphysical necessity that is epistemologically a...

In this regard the nonlinear relative dynamics of deputy-chief spacecrafts are derived within the concept of both circular and elliptical three body problem; as well the perturbation model of the Moon and the linear model of restricted three...

Modeling of Major Depression by Using Computational Intelligence

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Darvish, Setareh (Author) ; Seifipour, Navid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Mental disorders are very common nowadays and affect a person’s everyday life, as well as the lives of other people around him/her. According to the World Health Organization, major depressive disorder (MDD) is considered as the fourth main cause of death and premature weakness in the whole world. Information Technology (IT) could be used to diagnose the people who are affected by the mental disorders as well as reduce their effects. As clinical decision making inherently requires reasoning under uncertainty, fuzzy logic is a suitable technique for dealing with this partial evidence. The fuzzy logic is the science of reasoning; thinking and inference that recognizes and uses the real world...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Darvish Sarvestani, Behnam (Author) ; Mansouri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Galaxy clusters are the most massive virialized systems in the universe. Their studies provide crucial grasp on the galaxy formation and evolution, dark matter and its nature, cosmological parameters and large scale structure of the universe. Because of their significant role in cosmology, providing a catalogue of galaxy clusters in a wide range of spatial angle, mass and redshift seems vital. Galaxy cluster detection can be performed by various methods in a broad spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. Optical detection of galaxy clusters is of the most traditional and popular methods. Among optical algorithms, one of the most efficient is called Cluster Red Sequence (CRS) which applies the...

The Role of Conventionals(Itibaryat) in Philosophy of Science

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Darvish Aghajani, Javad (Author) ; Golshani, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to different interpretations of the philosophy of science schools, scientific knowledge, is responsible for explanation, description, control and prediction of material phenomena and their relationships. But these facts, besides their real aspects, which can be observed and found by episteme, have a conventional side. The conventional aspect of science is rules and contracts which are obtained from the facts you can find by techne. Although conventionals can be traced back to the division of science into theoretical and practical by Aristotle and other Hellenistic philosophers, but in this century Islamic philosophers especially, Tatbayee paid more attention to this topic. This...

The Effect of Shock and Vibration Loads on Disconnection and Fluctuations of Electrical Current in Connectors

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Darvish Gohari, Hamed (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electrical connectors that used in high speed systems interrupt the connection at the effect of Inertia. Also connectors should be able to work in high vibration conditions without any problems. Vibration of the connector pins can reduce the contact area or even remove it at very short time intervals, which lead to increase connector resistance or disconnection of instantaneous current. These current fluctuations will result in unpredictable performance disturbanceof the electrical system in very sensitive systems and therefore it should be avoided. In this Project, impacts of shock and vibration loads on the connectors is modeled by using FEM and with consideration of this model, connection...

Identifying Core Genes in Estimation of Missing Gene Expressions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Darvish Shafighi, Shadi (Author) ; Motahari, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Characterizing cellular states in response to various disease conditions is an important issue which is addressed by different methods such as Large-scale gene expression profiling. One of the most important challenges in front of bioinformaticians is the loss of data because expression profiling is still very expensive. It is understood that profiling a group of selected genes could be enough for understanding all of the gene expression profile. In this research, we propose a fast method for estimation of the missing values inlow-rank matrices. We consider the highly correlated expression profiles as a low-rank matrix. Then, we used this new method in a proposed algorithm which will select...

Computational study of spin caloritronics in a pristine and defective antimonene nanoribbon

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Volume 120 , 2020 Hashemi, S ; Faez, R ; Darvish, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, by using first-principle density functional theory (DFT) combined with non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF), thermally induced spin current in zigzag and armchair Antimonene Nanoribbon (SbNR) is investigated. Also, we obtain higher spin current in Armchair nanoribbon (ANR) than zigzag nanoribbon (ZNR), because the start energy of transmission for ANR is closer to the Fermi level than ZNR. The results show that the device has a perfect spin Seebeck effect under temperature difference without gate voltage or bias voltage. For the ANR configuration, the competition between spin up holes and spin down electrons leads to negative differential behavior of charge current, which is...

Numerical simulation of vertical tunneling transistor with bilayer graphene as source and drain regions

    , Article Physica Status Solidi (A) Applications and Materials Science ; Volume 214, Issue 10 , 2017 ; 18626300 (ISSN) Horri, A ; Faez, R ; Darvish, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
In this paper, the electrical characteristics of vertical tunneling bilayer graphene field effect transistor (VTBGFET) are theoretically investigated. We evaluate the device behavior using nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism combined with an atomistic tight binding model. By using this method, we extract the most significant figures of merit such as ON/OFF current ratio, subthreshold swing, and intrinsic gate-delay time. The results indicate that using a bilayer graphene instead of a monolayer graphene as the base material for the source and drain regions leads to a larger ON/OFF current ratio due to the presence of an energy bandgap in biased bilayer graphene. Also, the...

Polymer-Enhanced low-salinity brine to control in situ mixing and salt dispersion in low-salinity waterflooding

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Volume 35, Issue 13 , 2021 , Pages 10540-10550 ; 08870624 (ISSN) Darvish Sarvestani, A ; Rostami, B ; Mahani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2021
    Abstract
Although viability of low-salinity waterflooding (LSWF) at the laboratory scale has been proven, there are some challenges associated with its field application, which sheds uncertainties on its economic success. One of the challenges is the minimum required volume of low-salinity water, which should be injected to the reservoir due to the salt dispersion in porous media. Once the low-saline brine is injected into the reservoir, mixing of injected (low-salinity) and resident (high-salinity) brines occurs and the developed mixing zone grows continuously as the front moves from the injection well toward the production well. Increase in the salinity of the front reduces the efficiency of LSWF....

Impact of injection parameters on mixing control by polymer-enhanced low-salinity waterflooding

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Volume 36, Issue 19 , 2022 , Pages 11808-11816 ; 08870624 (ISSN) Darvish Sarvestani, A ; Rostami, B ; Mahani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2022
    Abstract
In situ mixing by dispersive transport of salt and viscous fingering between the injected low-salinity (LS) brine and high-salinity (HS) formation brine can jeopardize the performance of low-salinity waterflooding (LSWF). In our previous papers, we demonstrated that in situ mixing can be suppressed by polymer-enhanced low-salinity waterflooding (PELS), in which a small amount of a viscosifying agent, such as a polymer, is added to the LS stream. Nevertheless, effective mixing control with PELS depends upon several factors and operational conditions, which have not yet been addressed. Therefore, this research focuses on the investigation of the impact of injection parameters, such as the...

Risk Breakdown Structure (RBS) Identification and Designing for projects

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdi, Mehdi (Author) ; Sepehri, Mehran (Supervisor)
    Abstract
To actualize and making the outputs of a project effectual, it is necessary to conduct an effective management during a project. This case may not be possible without accurately planning for activities, management and controlling all phases of a project ignoring the risk management of that project. If risks of a project cannot be detected before conducting a project, it is possible to challenge the performance and even effectiveness of the project. In current conditions, the most important problem of managers and executives of construction projects through the country is risk management of projects, not acknowledging with definitions of risk, models of risk management and lack of a model for...

    Distributed Cardiovascular System Modeling

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khani, Mehrdad (Author) ; Jahed, Mehran (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Simulation of cardiovascular system functionality during various physiological conditions is essential at different diagnostic and clinical levels. A first step in studying the roots of cardiovascular diseases and abnormal activity is to study a practical yet complete model of the cardiovascular system. In this thesis we introduced a new approach for defining the distributed model of the cardiovascular system. Initially, we chose an appropriate subsystem, namely Arch of Aorta, and proposed a distributed model for it. The elements of the proposed model were nonlinear RLC elements that simulate resistance, blood viscosity and vessel elasticity respectively. To minimize the system complexity,...
