Embedded System Vulnerability Analysis Approach Based on Firmware Modification Attacks in Industrial Control Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pour Vali Moghadam, Hamed (Author) ; Jahangir, Amir Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A wide range of field devices, including Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), are used in Industrial Control Systems (ICSs). These devices are embedded systems that are responsible for protecting the power system devices against faults and damage by controlling circuit breakers. Disruptions in command and control can result in accidents and harm. Due to their physical accessibility and the possibility of backdoors, blackout attacks may be designed and implemented on these devices in a manner similar to what has occurred in many countries in recent year. Many vulnerabilities have been reported for Real-Time Operating System (RTOS), firmware, and software of...

    Abstract
In this paper we introduce a novel population-based binary optimization technique, which works based on consensus of interacting multi-agent systems. The agents, each associated with an opinion vector, are connected through a network. They can influence each other, and thus their opinions can be updated. The agents work collectively with their neighbors to solve an optimization task. Here we consider a specific opinion update rule and various topologies for the connection network. Our experiments on a number of benchmark non-convex cost functions show that ring topology results in the best performance as compared to others. We also compare the performance of the proposed method with a number...

    Abstract
In this thesis a method based on opinion formation in complex networks aiming to solve unconstrained optimization problem has been studied. Unconstrained optimization problem is the problem of searching for the best solution in the solution space. Optimization problems have many applications in various fields that due to advances in data storage and also appearance of new big data applications solving these problems in large scales gained much importance. Different methods have been proposed in order to solve such problems but because of high computational complexity, many of them do not show good performance. A category of methods called stochastic search methods are used to overcome the...

    Abstract
Correct scheduling of the project is the necessary condition for the project success. In traditional models, the activities duration times are deterministic and known. In real world however, accurate calculation of time for performing each activity is not possible and is always faced with uncertainty. In this paper, the duration of each activity is estimated by the experts as linguistic variables and the said variables are represented in fuzzy numbers form using the fuzzy theory. Estimating the project accomplishment duration and determining the project critical path will be possible through resolving a fuzzy linear programming model. For solving model, Fuzzy Critical Path Method Algorithm...

    Abstract
Time, cost and quality are among the major objectives of any project. In recent years, the demands of project stakeholders regarding reductions in the total cost and time of a project along with achieving the desirable quality of the project have risen significantly. This leads researchers to developing models that incorporate the quality factor to previously existing time-cost trade-off models. This study presents a model for the discrete time-cost-quality trade-off problem. In this model there are a number of execution modes to select for each activity, and the best execution mode (t, c, q) of the activities should be determined to optimize total cost and time objectives, subjected to...

    Abstract
Accurate prediction of electricity demand is essential for planning, policy making and resource allocation in national level. In this manuscript, we applied a number of artificial intelligence methods to predict macro-scale electricity consumption rates in Iran. To this end, three socio-economic and three environmental factors were considered as inputs to the prediction models. We used data for the period 1967-2013 in order to predict the power demand in the years 2014-2018. Experimental results showed that the path coefficient analysis model with linear coefficients had the best performance among the models considered in this study. The outcome of this research can help the policy makers to...

, Article European Journal Of Operational Research ; Vol. 205, No. 1, pp. 98-105 Samarghandi, H. (Hamed) ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

    Abstract
A very important part of the living cells of biological systems is the lipid membrane. The mechanical properties of this membrane play an important role in biophysical studies. Investigation as to how the insertion of additional phospholipids in one leaflet of a bilayer affects the physical properties of the obtained asymmetric lipid membrane is of recent practical interest. In this work a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation was carried out in order to compute the pressure tensor, the lateral pressure, the surface tension and the first moment of lateral pressure in each leaflet of such a bilayer. Our simulations indicate that adding more phospholipids into one monolayer results in...

    Abstract
This paper studies the problem of secure and resilient distributed cooperative control for autonomous vehicles under false data injection attacks on the vehicular communication net-work. We propose a model-based scheme to detect unknown data falsification attacks using the predicted traj ectory in a distributed nonlinear model predictive control problem. First, as a local agent, each autonomous vehicle stores the information received from its neighboring vehicles to clarify anomalies. The recorded data is investigated over a temporal moving observation window which contains different prediction sequences of the distributed nonlinear model predictive control problem in the previous times. In...

On The Non-Linear Behavior of Continuous Beam to Column Connection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Ahmad (Author) ; Moghadam, Hasan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A special steel beam-to-column connection, named Khor-jini, is commonly used for steel framing system in Iran. In this system, two continuous beams are passed next to the columns and are connected to the column side using seated brackets. This type of connection has been common in Iran from the late past. Unfortunately, the seismic behavior of Khorjini frames had not been sufficiently studied prior to Manjil Earthquake of 1990. Due to very large damages which occurred in steel structures especially in connections during the said earthquake, the seismic behavior of this type of connection was studied and some of its weak points were recognized. In this study non-linear...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemi, Amin (Author) ; Heidari, Moghadam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present research, model-based reasoning is introduced and explained based on Giere’s explanation of model. In other word, this research could be regarded as a reconstruction of model in Giere’s books and papers due to prpose a clear explanation of model-based reasoning. In the second chapter, after the introduction, the concept of model in Giere’s distinguished book, “Explainnig Science: A Cognitive Approach” (1988) is introduced and analyzed. In the second chapter, however, the concept of model in Giere’s recent works is traced. “An agent-based account of model” and “focusing on functionality rather than ontology” could be explained as the two important differences between his...

    Abstract
By locating a steel shear panel on the intersection point of the X-braces, concentrically or eccentrically braced shear panel (CBFSP or EBFSP) is formed. In this paper, to perform parametric study, 1-story CBFSP and EBFSP models with span length greater or less than height are considered. Using linear static analyses, the effects of size and location of the shear panel on the lateral stiffness of the frame with respect to the moment resisting frame with the same member sections are investigated. Next, for 1- And 3-story models, maximum displacement, along with base shear, and the ratio between the dissipated energy and input energy are examined under 4 ground motion records. Behavior of the...

    Abstract
Occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquake could seriously damage most buildings especially those with insufficient resistance located in urban worn-out textures. In order to reduce unpleasant consequences of an earthquake, appropriate policies need to be considered to persuade the beneficiaries to follow retrofitting standards in the process of planning, designing, and construction of buildings. These policies shall be implemented through institutions in arbitrary or obligatory forms, by encouragement or penalty mechanisms. In order to consider these policies, first of all we need to identify the beneficiaries and their particulars. By studying and considering subjects discussed in...

Development of a Multi-functional Soil Column for Studying Bioremediation and Multiphase Flow

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Samari, Peyman (Author) ; Sadeghi, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Soil and water pollution is one of the most common types of pollution in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The development of mines and the oil and petrochemical industry on one hand and the non-compliance with environmental requirements on the other hand have caused large amounts of hydrocarbon pollutants and heavy metals to enter the environment in recent decades. Petroleum materials and heavy metals leak into the surrounding environment during drilling and extraction in oil sites and mines or during land and sea transportation, despite the measures taken to control their pollution. The conducted studies show that human industrial activities are the only cause of environmental pollution...
