Synthesis and characterization of poly(butadiene-b-sulphone) by block-copolycondensation—I. Synthesis from α,ω-dichlorocarbonyl oligobutadienes and α,ω-diphenol oligoarylethersulphones [electronic resource]

    , Article European Polymer Journal ; Volume 20, Issue 4, 1984, Pages 305–310 Pourdjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Madec, P. J ; Marechal, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Synthesis of poly (butadiene-b-sulphone) has been carried out by two methods. Reaction of α,ω-di(sodium phenolate) oligosulphone with α,ω-di(chlorocarbonyl)oligobutadiene or reaction of α,ω-diphenol oligosulphone with α,ω-di(chlorocarbonyl)oligobutadiene in the presence of magnesium. For both methods, the reaction was carried out between two models (bisphenol A and adipoyl chloride) or between a model and an oligomer or between two oligomers. For the first reaction a two-step process, involving the separation and the purification of the phenolate, is described: it is more efficient than the classical one-step process, where acid chloride is added in an alkaline solution of phenol. The second...

Synthesis and characterization of poly(methacrylates) containing spiroacetal and norbornene moieties in side chain [electronic resource]

, Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 77, Issue 1, pages 30–38, 5 July 2000 Pourdjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Mirjalili, Bibi Fatemeh ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A four-step synthetic strategy was applied to achieve novel methacrylic monomers. 5-Norbornene-2,2-dimethanol was prepared from a Diels–Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and acrolein, followed by the treatment of the adduct with an HCHO/KOH/MeOH solution. The resulting 1,3-diol (1) was then acetalized with different aromatic aldehydes having OH groups on the ring to produce four spiroacetal derivatives. The reaction of methacryloyl chloride with the phenolic derivatives led to four new methacrylic monomers that were identified spectrochemically (mass, FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy). Free radical solution polymerization was used to prepare novel spiroacetal–norbornene containing...

A new homologous series of linear aliphatic unsaturated hydroxypolyesters a polyol soft segments for polyurethanes: Synthesis and characterization [electronic resource]

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 68, Issue 2, pages 173–183, 11 April 1998 Pourdjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Rezai, Nasrin ; Zohurian, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Synthesis and characterization of a new series of low molecular weight (MW = 500–3000) OH-terminated linear aliphatic unsaturated polyesters based on cis-2-butene-1,4-diol and oxalic to sebacic acid were investigated. Direct polycondensation and transesterification methods were used for the syntheses. The latter was recognized to be the preferable method due to its lower reaction temperature and time, lower diol/diacid ratio, absence of decarboxylation, and formation of a product with low polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.3–2.7). Elemental analysis, GPC, FTIR, 1H-NMR, DSC, and WAXD were used for the investigations. A segmented polyurethane based on poly (cis-2-butylene adipate) glycol was also...

, Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 112, Issue 5, pages 2625–2633, 5 June 2009 Pourdjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Rezanejad Barajee, Ghasem ; Soleyman, Rouhollah ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Synthesis and swelling behavior of a new superabsorbent hydrogel based on natural salep grafted with polyacrylamide is described. The new superabsorbent hydrogel biopolymer was synthesized via radical crosslinking and graft copolymerization of acrylamide monomer onto salep backbones. Regarding to the water absorption of hydrogel, the best synthesis condition is reported. FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were used to confirm the structure of the final product and a mechanism for superabsorbent hydrogel formation was also suggested. After preparing the desired hydrogels based on optimum condition, several factors affecting the swelling behavior of hydrogel including pH of...

Novel azo-containing polymethacrylates bearing spiroacetal-norbornene moiety and methylene spacers: synthesis and characterization [electronic resource]

    , Article European Polymer Journal ; Volume 37, Issue 10, October 2001, Pages 2111–2121 Pourdjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Mirjalili, Bibi Fatemeh ; Entezami, Ali A ; Zohuriaan-Mehr, Mohammad J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An eight-step synthetic strategy was followed to prepare a series of novel azobenzene-containing methacrylate monomers bearing spiroacetal-norbornene moiety and methylene spacers. Thus, the adduct 2, obtained from cyclopentadiene and acrolein, was converted to 1,3-diol 3. The diol was acetalized with nitrobenzaldehyde 4 under microwave irradiation to obtain nitro compound 5 that was then reduced to amino compound 6. Diazonium salt of 6 was coupled with phenol to produce phenolic compound 7 which was then reacted with n-dibromoalkanes (n=2, 4, 6, 8, 10) to yield bromo compounds 9a–e. Nucleophilic substitution reaction of the bromo compounds with lithium methacrylate produced the methacrylic...

    Abstract
A non-terminated, low molecular weight, highly crystalline, linear aliphatic polyester was successfully synthesized via ester-interchange polycondensation of cis-2-butene-1,4-diol and diethyl oxalate by using of lead (II) oxide as the catalyst. No decarboxylation occurred during the optimized polymerization. Structural and Chemical identification was performed by elemental analysis, FTIR, 'H-NMR, and Mass spectroscopy. Some macrocyle species were detected in the product, according to GPC. Fragmentation patterns were suggested for the main m/e's of the mass spectrum. Thermal characterization was performed by DSC and TGA. It was found that the overall thermal stability of the polyester is...

    Abstract
Tetraphenylthiophene diamine (TPTDA) was prepared through a modified three-step route to achieve an improved overall yield. TPTDA reacted with succinic, adipic, suberic, sebasic, and fumaric acids via the Yamazaki phosphorylation method to yield novel partially aromatic polyamides (TPT series). A counterpart polyamide series based on p-phenylene diamine (Ph series) was also synthesized under the same conditions. All of the polymers were characterized by means of spectrochemical (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and 13C-NMR) and thermal (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric) methods of analysis. Solubility of TPT polyamides was...

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to employ feedback control loops to provide a stable forward dynamics simulation of human movement under repeated position constraint conditions in the environment, particularly during stair climbing. A ten-degrees-of-freedom skeletal model containing 18 Hill-type musculotendon actuators per leg was employed to simulate the model in the sagittal plane. The postural tracking and obstacle avoidance were provided by the proportional—integral—derivative controller according to the modulation of the time rate change of the joint kinematics. The stability of the model was maintained by controlling the velocity of the body's centre of mass according to the desired centre of...

Modification of carbohydrate polymers via grafting in air. 1. Ceric-Induced synthesis of starch-g-polyacrylonitrile in presence and absence of oxygen [electronic resource]

    , Article Starch - Starke ; Volume 54, Issue 3-4, pages 140–147, April 2002 Pourjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Zohurian Mehr, Mohammad J
    Abstract
Monomer grafting, a unique technique for polysaccharide modification, is always performed under inert (e.g., N2) atmosphere. This work is the first report related to evaluating the possibility and efficiency of the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) onto starch in presence of oxygen. Thus, corn starch (in both granular and gelatinized states) as well as soluble starch were grafted by AN using a ceric-carbohydrate redox initiating system. Graft copolymerizations were performed under nitrogen, air, and oxygen atmospheres at similar conditions. Grafting occurrence was verified using chemical and spectral proofs. The polymerization mechanism and kinetics were investigated by recording the...

Modification of carbohydrate polymers via grafting in Air. 2. Ceric-Initiated graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile onto natural and modified polysaccharides [electronic resource]

    , Article Starch - Stärke ; Volume 54, Issue 10, pages 482–488, October 2002 Pourjavad, A. (Ali) ; Zohuriaan-Mehr, Mohammad J
    Abstract
Acrylonitrile (AN) was grafted onto various natural and modified polysaccharides (i.e., gum arabic, gum tragacanth, xanthan gum, sodium alginate, chitosan, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose) by using ceric-carbohydrate redox initiating system. After overcoming practical problems, mainly from the high viscosity of the aqueous solutions of the different substrates, the graft copolymerization reactions were run either in air or in N2 atmosphere under similar conditions. Grafting was confirmed using chemical and spectral (FTIR) proofs. The reactions were kinetically investigated using semi-empirical expressions and time-temperature profiles. An anomalous...

A hybrid SA/TS algorithm for graph coloring problem [electronic resource]

, Article International Journal of Operational Research (IJOR) ; Volume 11, Number 2/2011 Pages 136-159 Pahlavani, A. (Ali) ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The graph colouring problem, as an important NP-complete problem, is considered in this paper and a hybrid meta-heuristic approach is developed to solve it. The initial solution of the algorithm, generated by a heuristic method, is used by a simulated annealing (SA) approach to generate new solutions until no progress in a number of solutions reported. At this stage, the algorithm will use a tabu search routine and this local search operator will be followed for some iterations. After finding a better solution, the algorithm is again followed through SA. Efficiency of the algorithm is showed through various experiments on well-known benchmark problems of DIMACS. Comparison with the available...

    Blind index coding

    Abstract
We introduce the blind index coding (BIC) problem, in which a single sender communicates distinct messages to multiple users over a shared channel. Each user has partial knowledge of each message as side information. However, unlike classical index coding, in BIC, the sender is uncertain of what side information is available to each user. In particular, the sender only knows the amount of bits in each user's side information but not its content. This problem can arise naturally in caching and wireless networks. In order to blindly exploit side information in the BIC problem, we develop a hybrid coding scheme that XORs uncoded bits of a subset of messages with random combinations of bits from...

Characterizing the rate-memory tradeoff in cache networks within a factor of 2

    Abstract
We consider a basic caching system, where a single server with a database of N files (e.g. movies) is connected to a set of K users through a shared bottleneck link. Each user has a local cache memory with a size of M files. The system operates in two phases. a placement phase, where each cache memory is populated up to its size from the database, and a following delivery phase, where each user requests a file from the database, and the server is responsible for delivering the requested contents. The objective is to design the two phases to minimize the load (peak or average) of the bottleneck link. We characterize the rate-memory tradeoff of the above caching system within a factor of...

    Abstract
We consider the problem of interference management in wireless cellular networks with caches at both base stations and receivers, and we characterize the degrees of freedom (DoFs) per cell to within an additive gap of (1/3) and a multiplicative gap of 2 for all system parameters, under one-shot linear schemes. Our result indicates that the one-shot linear DoF per cell scales linearly with the total amount of cache available in the cell, i.e., the sum of the caches at the central base station and all the receivers within the cell, resembling a similar phenomenon previously observed for the case of fully connected wireless networks. To establish the result, we propose a decentralized and...
