Performance Optimization of Cu Wires for Network-on-chip Based Many-core Architectures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Radfar, Farzad (Author) ; Sarvari, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The exponential increase in power density within a chip due to higher frequency of operation in recent years (Moor's law) is a major limiting factor for designers. Increasing the number of parallel cores instead of increasing the frequency of operation is a possible solution. The design of connections within the cores can be followed by the old process but the global interconnectsbetween the cores instead of point to point can be replaced byNetwork-on-Chip (NoC). In this thesis, The dimensions of global interconnects in many-core chips are optimized for maximum bandwidth density and minimum delay taking into account network-on-chip router latency and size effects of coppe. The optimal...

    Runtime Analysis of Self-adaptive Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bagheri, Maryam (Author) ; Movaghar, Ali (Supervisor) ; Sirjani, Marjan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Increasing the complexity of software systems, their ubiquitous presence in the human activities, and necessity to preserving the functional and nonfunctional requirements of the systems under an uncertain environment, increase the need for self-adaptive systems. A self-adaptive system changes its structure and behaviors in response to changes in its environment and the system itself. A key research challenge in the self-adaptive community is to guarantee that the system fulfills its requirements. This issue can be addressed by employing formal methods during the design of the software systems. However, the assurance techniques should be used during the execution of the system as well as the...

Comparison between optimal interconnection network in different 2D and 3D NoC structures

    , Article International System on Chip Conference ; 2014 , p. 171-176 Radfar, F ; Zabihi, M ; Sarvari, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
The current article studies optimal intercore interconnect network in a NoC structure for 2D and 3D mesh, torus and hypercube topologies. Optimal wire width/spacing is calculated by numerically maximizing bandwidth times the reciprocal delay, which depends on the technology node and hop length. Through 3D integration and increasing tiers, optimal interconnect width and spacing in torus and hypercube topologies will decrease. The core-to-core channel width in all topologies will be obtained by assigning 20% of the power consumption to the routers. By increasing number of cores, channel width will decrease due to reduced power consumption of each core. This is more in hypercube topology, due...

A New Approach to Loss Aversion in Repeated Gambles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Radfar, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Zamani, Shiva (Supervisor)
    Abstract
After introducing “Prosopect Theory” by Kahneman and Tversky in 1979, it is mostly used as an alternative to expected utility theory in order to study human decision making under risky situatutions. Loss aversion has been considered as an important aspect of this theory. In this study, we review loss aversion and the effects of education and gender on it. Finally, we study the effect of repeating a gamble on its participants’ loss aversions. The results show that education and gender have direct effects on loss aversion and repeating a gamble can decrease loss aversion of participants.

Design and Manufacturing of Gradient Cellular Tibial Stem for Total Knee Replacement

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Atiyeh (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Bahrami Nasab, Marjan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Loosening of uncemented tibial component is one the most common causes of total knee prosthesis failure which is a result of short-term factors such as instability and incomplete osseointegration as well as long-term factors such as peri-prosthetic stress shielding and bone atrophy. Porous cellular structures for tibial stem have been considered as a solution to this problem. This project is aimed to achieve an optimal gradient porous cellular design of tibial stem that in addition to sufficient mechanical strength, provides a perfect osseointegration and prevents bone resorption by incorporating appropriate porosity size, small micro-motion and favorable stress distribution on bone. A...

Theoretical Investigation of Quantum Optical Amplifiers in Quantum Communications

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Marjan, Negar (Author) ; Bahrampour, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Bathaee, Marzieh Sadat (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Signal transmission of information on noiseless and lossy channels is an important issue in data transmission. Using the amplifier in the transmission channels is a good solution to help send information on longer channels. In classical communication, information can be coded in the amplitude or phase of the field and an amplifier is responsible for amplifying these parameters. If we consider the conditions ideal and ignore electrical noises, Classical mechanics does not impose any restrictions on the amplification of arbitrary classical signals. Instead, in quantum telecommunications the information encoded on the quadrature of the electromagnetic field are mounted on quantum states, such...

    Abstract
Considering the wide spread locations of wind farms in Iran, it is important to develop a suitable decision support system (DSS) to fulfill proper management of wind farms. Extensive literature survey indicates that there are no integrated forms of DSS to manage a set of wind farms. The existing wind farms are performing independently, and there is no practical method for exchanging the online data. DSS can contribute to optimal operation of wind farms, operation and maintenance scheduling, pricing policy, etc. In this study, a geographic information system and RETSCREEN software were linked to the designed DSS to achieve a more suitable result. Also, a huge number of data are constantly...

Minimizing the error of time difference of arrival method in mobile networks

    , Article 2005 International Conference on Wirelessand Optical Communications Networks, Dubai, 6 March 2005 through 8 March 2005 ; 2005 , Pages 328-332 ; 0780390199 (ISBN); 9780780390195 (ISBN) Malekitabar, A ; Aghababa, H ; Radfar, M. H ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Estimating the position of a mobile set is of great importance in new mobile services. However, in most cases, the accuracy should be less than 100 meters. This accuracy is hard to reach especially in urban areas. The main problem is that there are a lot of obstacles like buildings between the BTS and the mobile set. Thus the time measured between BTS and the mobile set is somehow greater than the time it takes the wave to travel directly between two points. This paper introduces an optimized solution for TDOA as one of the most efficient ways for finding the location of a mobile phone. Considering the standards and limitations of both GSM and UMTS, the Authors present a solution for...

    Abstract
In this paper characteristics of a linear, 6H-SiC photoconductive semiconductor switch are presented. The vanadium-doped semi-insulated 6H-SiC PCSS device is designed in a back-triggered, radial switch structure. For this purpose, three-dimensional (3D) device modeling tool was used to model and test the optically initiated 6H-SiC switch. Dark I-V characteristic results show that newly proposed rear-illuminated radial switch structure extends the blocking voltage by reducing the peak electric fields near electrodes. Also this radial structure has higher dark resistance as compared to the previous 6H-SiC PCSS experimental results. The ON-state characteristics of vanadium compensated 6H-SiC...

    Abstract
Snakebite envenoming is an important cause of preventable death. The World Health Organization (WHO) set a goal to halve snakebite mortality by 2030. We used verbal autopsy and vital registration data to model the proportion of venomous animal deaths due to snakes by location, age, year, and sex, and applied these proportions to venomous animal contact mortality estimates from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study. In 2019, 63,400 people (95% uncertainty interval 38,900–78,600) died globally from snakebites, which was equal to an age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) of 0.8 deaths (0.5–1.0) per 100,000 and represents a 36% (2–49) decrease in ASMR since 1990. India had the greatest number...

    Abstract
Background Oesophageal cancer is a common and often fatal cancer that has two main histological subtypes: oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Updated statistics on the incidence and mortality of oesophageal cancer, and on the disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) caused by the disease, can assist policy makers in allocating resources for prevention, treatment, and care of oesophageal cancer. We report the latest estimates of these statistics for 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2017, by age, sex, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD). Methods We used data...

    Abstract
Background: Stomach cancer is a major health problem in many countries. Understanding the current burden of stomach cancer and the differential trends across various locations is essential for formulating effective preventive strategies. We report on the incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to stomach cancer in 195 countries and territories from 21 regions between 1990 and 2017. Methods: Estimates from GBD 2017 were used to analyse the incidence, mortality, and DALYs due to stomach cancer at the global, regional, and national levels. The rates were standardised to the GBD world population and reported per 100 000 population as age-standardised incidence rates,...

    Abstract
Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty...

    Abstract
Background: Measuring routine childhood vaccination is crucial to inform global vaccine policies and programme implementation, and to track progress towards targets set by the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) and Immunization Agenda 2030. Robust estimates of routine vaccine coverage are needed to identify past successes and persistent vulnerabilities. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020, Release 1, we did a systematic analysis of global, regional, and national vaccine coverage trends using a statistical framework, by vaccine and over time. Methods: For this analysis we collated 55 326 country-specific, cohort-specific, year-specific,...
