    Abstract
Dissimilar Al/Cu joints were produced through simple cold compression technique. The influence of different reductions (40, 53 and 66 %) on the joint strength was studied. Also, the effect of heat treatment on the joints’ mechanical characteristics was investigated using a modified miniature shear test. Microscopical examinations by means of optical and scanning electron microscopes were conducted and results confirmed that acceptable joints produced through 53 and 66 % deformations. According to the shear test results, it was revealed that post-weld heat treatment influenced the joint’s strength and caused strength enhancement in the samples which were not subjected to annealing prior to...

Microstructure and Wear Properties of WC/CuZnNi Compsite Surface Coating

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rafie Azad, Mehran (Author) ; Kokabi, Amir Hossein (Supervisor) ; Aashuri, Hossin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The microstructure and wear performance of WC/Cu-Zn-Ni composite surface coating has been investigated using a combination of microscopy, hardness, and wear testing. The oxidation behavior of tungsten carbide hard metal in the temperature range between 600 and 900 ◦C was also researched. The oxidation mass gain of WC correlated almost directly with temperature as well as time. The particle of hard metal is surrounded by the α Cu+β Zn phase in the surface coating. The size of hard metal is almost unchanged from its original one. There exists an inter-diffusion zone at the interface of the hard metals and Cu-based matrix. The wear volume of the WC/Cu-Zn-Ni composite surface coatings increased...

An investigation on the flow physics of bubble implosion using numerical techniques

    , Article Ocean Engineering ; Volume 153 , 2018 , Pages 185-192 ; 00298018 (ISSN) Moezzi Rafie, H ; Nasiri, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, implosion of a micron-sized air bubble was studied numerically using OpenFoam software package. Then a parametric investigation on the flow physics of the problem was performed. The results show that as the initial pressure of the liquid increases, the pressure and the temperature inside the bubble increases such that in some cases, the temperature is as high as the one required for luminescence. Also, increasing the density and the temperature of the liquid solely, decreases the intensity of the collapse. © 2018

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a two dimensional optimal linear detector (2-D OLD) for slowly fluctuating target in Gaussian interference. We assume that the samples of received signal in the range and in the successive pulsation times are collected in a two dimensional array. In conventional detectors, each column of this matrix (the Samples of the same pulsation time) is detected separately and the binary results may be integrated for successive pulsation times in order to improve the detection performance. In fact, by applying binary integration, we ignore the considerable correlation among 2-D data in the azimuth direction. In the proposed 2-D OLD detector, this correlation is considered,...

Numerical Simulation of Two-dimensional Sonoluminescence Phenomenon, Using Front Tracking/Ghost Fluid Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moezzi Rafie, Hamid (Author) ; Tayyebi Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sonoluminescence is a unique phenomenon in physics, which is known as the process of converting sound into light. By applying sound to a volume of liquid, with a specific geometrical shape (such as sphere) and forming standing waves around an existing bubble, the bubble first expands to a maximum radius and then gets extremely small leading to its supersonic collapse. During the collapse, the resulting shock wave approches the center of the bubble, causing extreme increase in the pressure and temperature at the center of the bubble. This causes flashing of light during small time scales (pico-seconds). This phenomenon is used in many fields, such as treatment of cancer. Also, the energy...

Managing Mega Project Construction Project with Method of Cost Management Approach (Case Study on the world’s fourth Mega Project)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohaghegh, Sina (Author) ; Rafie, Majid (Supervisor) ; Khalou, Alireza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the features of a project is its uniqueness, if two sets of activities are the same neither of them will longer be included in the project definition. A method in two projects with the same nature may yield inverse results of each other. Therefore, it is necessary to study the parameters affecting the project carefully before any action. So far, some research has been conducted in this area and it has been tried to perform case study on qualitative and quantitative parameters of the project. By investigating a number of common factors in most civil engineering projects, especially megaprojects, the present study attempts to identify and examine exquisite and effective parameters and...

    Abstract
Surface tension driven passive micro-pumping relies mainly on the surface tension properties. To have control over surface tension driven passive micro-pumps (STD-PMPs), it is essential to understand the physical background of the fluid flow in these pumps. Hence, the purpose of this work is to give an exploration of the flow physics of a STD-PMP. In this regard, computer simulation is used to give detailed information about the flow pattern and physical phenomena at different conditions. To this end, a droplet of water, with a specified diameter, is placed onto an entry port connected to another droplet at the exit port via a microchannel. The results indicate that the pumping process, in...

    Sequoia: A high-endurance NVM-Based cache architecture

    Abstract
Emerging nonvolatile memory technologies, such as spin-transfer torque RAM or resistive RAM, can increase the capacity of the last-level cache (LLC) in a latency and power-efficient manner. These technologies endure 109 - 1012 writes per cell, making a nonvolatile cache (NV-cache) with a lifetime of dozens of years under ideal working conditions. However, nonuniformity in writes to different cache lines considerably reduces the NV-cache lifetime to a few months. Writes to cache lines can be made uniformly by wear-leveling. A suitable wear-leveling for NV-cache should not incur high storage and performance overheads. We propose a novel, simple, and effective wear-leveling technique with...

    Abstract
This paper reports the results of SIMD implementation of a number of interpolation algorithms on common personal computers. These methods fit a curve on some given input points for which a mathematical function form is not known. We have implemented four widely used methods using vector processing capabilities embedded in Pentium processors. By using SSE (streaming SIMD extension) we could perform all operations on four packed single-precision (32-bit) floating point values simultaneously. Therefore, the running time decreases three times or even more depending on the number of points and the interpolation method. We have implemented four interpolation methods using SSE technology then...

    Abstract
The OTIS-Network (also referred to as two-level swapped network) is composed of n clones of an n-node original network constituting its clusters. It has received much attention due to its many favorable properties such as high degree of scalability, regularity, modularity, package-ability and high degree of algorithmic efficiency. In this paper, using the construction method, we show that the OTIS-Network is Pancyclic if its basic network is Hamiltonian- connected. The study of cycle embeddings with different sizes arises naturally in the implementation of a number of either computational or graph problems such as those used for finding storage schemes for logical data structures, layout of...

Modelling and evaluation of adaptive routing in high-performance n-D tori networks

    , Article Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory ; Volume 14, Issue 6 , 2006 , Pages 740-751 ; 1569190X (ISSN) Sarbazi Azad, H ; Ould-Khaoua, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Many fully-adaptive algorithms have been proposed to overcome the performance limitations of deterministic routing in networks used in high-performance multicomputers, such as the well-known regular n-D torus. This paper proposes a simple yet reasonably accurate analytical performance model to predict message communication latency in tori networks. This model requires a running time of O(1) which is the fastest model yet reported in the literature. Extensive simulations reveal that the new performance model maintains a reasonable accuracy when the network operates under different traffic conditions. The model is then used to perform an extensive investigation into the performance merits of...

The grid-pyramid: A generalized pyramid network

    , Article Journal of Supercomputing ; Volume 37, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 23-45 ; 09208542 (ISSN) Hoseinyfarahabady, M. R ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The Pyramid network is a desirable network topology used as both software data-structure and hardware architecture. In this paper, we propose a general definition for a class of pyramid networks that are based on grid connections between the nodes in each level. Contrary to the conventional pyramid network in which the nodes in each level form a mesh, the connections between these nodes may also be according to other grid-based topologies such as the torus, hypermesh or WK-recursive. Such pyramid networks form a wide class of interconnection networks that possess rich topological properties. We study a number of important properties of these topologies for general-purpose parallel processing...

The Recursive Transpose-Connected Cycles (RTCC) interconnection network for multiprocessors

    2005
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new modular topology for interconnection networks, the Recursive Transpose-Connected Cycles (RTCC). The RTCC has a recursive definition quite similar to that of fractal graphs having interesting topological characteristics, making it suitable for utilization as the base topology of large-scale multicomputer interconnection networks. We study important properties of this topology such as diameter, bisection width and issues related to implementation, such as routing algorithms and the average message latency under VLSI layout constraints. In addition, we prove that the RTCC is a Hamiltonian graph, We conclude that, insight of most of the above-mentioned properties,...

    2011
    Abstract
Programmable hardware is gaining popularity as it can keep pace with growing performance demand in tight power budget, design and test cost, and serious reliability concerns of future multiprocessor embedded systems. Compatible with this trend, Network-on-Chip, as a potential bottleneck of future multi-cores, should also support pro-grammability. Here, we address this issue in design and implementation of routing algorithm for two-dimensional mesh. To this end, we allocate paths based on input traffic pattern and in parallel with customizing routing restriction for deadlock freedom. To achieve this, we propose extended turn model (ETM), a novel parametric deadlock-free routing for 2D meshes...

Quantifying the difference in resource demand among classic and modern NoC workloads

    , Article Proceedings of the 34th IEEE International Conference on Computer Design, ICCD 2016, 2 October 2016 through 5 October 2016 ; 2016 , Pages 404-407 ; 9781509051427 (ISBN) Mirhosseini, A ; Sadrosadati, M ; Zare, M ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2016
    Abstract
This paper quantifies the difference in resource demand between modern and classic NoC workloads. In the paper, we show that modern workloads are able to better utilize higher numbers of VCs and smaller C factors in order to attain performance and energy efficiency. This is because of the high throughput and possible local congestions in their traffic pattern. As a result, such workloads are more suitable for concurrency and redundancy energy reduction techniques where the voltage and frequency are reduced simultaneously and the increased power budget is used for introducing additional resources to the network in order to improve the performance
