, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarraf, Samyar (Author) ; Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor) ; Rafiee Dehkharghani, Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of partake quake-attenuating in buildings is to absorb energy and to attenuate the exerted forces into structures as a result of ground motions. Notwithstanding achievements and developments in the field of dampers production, applying of dampers in structures is proportional to following complicated technology and subtle engineering. Installation and initiation of dampers depend on educated and expert crew; moreover, such attenuating systems need maintenance and repair during the useful structural life time. Therefore, nowadays civil engineering suffers from the lack of such quake-attenuating systems to be able to respond simply but applicable mechanism at the same time for...

Isolation System for Mitigation of Horizontal Seismic Waves Effects

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarraf, Sadyar (Author) ; Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor) ; Rafiee Dehkharghani, Reza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Earthquakes cause considerable damages and human and financial losses all around the world. Without doubt, the most important earthquake injuries are those that arise as a result of building failure in an earthquake. Conventional design codes provided a minimum level of protection against strong ground shaking to mitigate earthquake effects on structure by utilizing structural elements such as shear walls, braced frames, etc. Although, these provisions guarantee only that the building will not collapse, but it does not protect the buildings from structural damage. This method considers strengthening of structural lateral resistance system to verify earthquake forces. However, new methods...

An Artificial Neural Network Surrogate Model Development for GAGD Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rafiee, Javad (Author) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gas-Assisted-Gravity-Drainage (GAGD) is a new enhanced oil recovery method which utilizes the natural tendency of gas and oil to segregate due to gravity. Higher recovery of GAGD, compared to continuous gas injection (CGI) and Water-Alternating-Gas (WAG) makes it the focus of researches in recent years. This work is trying to propose a surrogate model based on Artificial Neural Networks for GAGD process. The proposed model should be able to mimic the behavior the process in a short time in order to be used as an alternative computationally expensive simulator where a large number of simulations are needed, such as sensitivity analysis, optimization of the process, or risk analysis. A...

Modeling of Wellbore Stability in Shales including Proelsatic, Chemical and Thermal Effects

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rafiee Pur, Saeed (Author) ; Ghotbi, Sirous (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wellbore instability is one of the serious problems during drilling. This can cause delay in drilling, increasing drilling costs and in some cases well abandonment. The present project investigates the effects of non- isothermal drilling and the difference in salt concentration between formation fluid and drilling fluid on the stability of wellbores drilled in the saturated porous shale formations subjected to an arbitrary stress field. This project also focuses on the analysis of wellbore stability in shale formations in which the thermal diffusivity is higher than fluid invasion and the mechanism of heat transfer is dominated by conduction. The governing equations used in this dissertation...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zamani, Reza (Author) ; Mohtatasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor) ; Rafiee Dehkhareghani, Reza ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
Damage detection and rehabiltation is one of the most economical methods of increasing safety and service life of the structures. In this research, a wave-based methodology is introduced for laminar damage location in single axial members and combined axial-flexural members within a structure. Laminar damage is a kind of local damage in which the cross section area of a member decreases within a specific length. In the proposed wave-based methodology, a structure with a laminar damage is analyzed using a Finite Element (FE) software under a high frequency loading, and the strain values in specific points of the structure is collected. Thereafter, using the wave propagation theories and the...

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 109 , 2018 , Pages 312-323 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Rezaie, A ; Rafiee dehkharghani, R ; Mohtasham dolatshahi, K ; Mirghaderi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Traditionally, the effects of seismic forces on structures have been mitigated by installing supplemental energy dissipation systems. In this paper, a new approach is explored for the mitigation of earthquake-induced vibrations by obstructing the entrance of seismic energy to the structure through the insertion of some concrete wave barriers within the soil domain. To do so, genetic algorithm (GA) based adaptive optimization methodology is utilized that is capable of finding the efficient layout of the concrete barriers in a manipulated soil zone around the structure. The optimization methodology is coupled with finite element (FE) method for analyzing the complex wave propagation phenomenon...

Modelling of generalized newtonian lid-driven cavity flow using an SPH method

    , Article ANZIAM Journal ; Volume 49, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 411-422 ; 14461811 (ISSN) Rafiee, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is introduced for simulating two-dimensional incompressible non-Newtonian fluid flows, and the non-Newtonian effects in the flow of a fluid which can be modelled by generalized Newtonian constitutive equations are investigated. Two viscoplastic models including Bingham-plastic and power-law models are considered along with the Newtonian model. The governing equations include the conservation of mass and momentum equations in a pseudo-compressible form. The spatial discretization of these equations is achieved by using the SPH method. The temporal discretization algorithm is a fully explicit two-step predictorcorrector scheme. In...

Vehicle Routing Problems with Mobile and Stochastic Customer Locations (VRP-MSCL)

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Shafaei, Abolfazl (Author) ; Akbari Jokar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor) ; Hemmati, Ahmad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In classical vehicle routing problems, a fixed and specific location is considered for each customer, which in many cases does not reflect reality. Many customers change their locations when distribution is carried out, and in some cases, it is challenging to predetermine their locations. This thesis proposes and develops the Vehicle Routing Problem with Mobile and Stochastic Customer Locations (VRP-MSCL), a subproblem of last-mile delivery. The concept of mobile and stochastic customer refers to a type of customer who is constantly moving, lacks a fixed location, and cannot be identified in advance; however, forecasting customers’ locations in advance is possible. This concept introduces a...

    Abstract
Topic detection is the task of determining and tracking hot topics in social media. Twitter is arguably the most popular platform for people to share their ideas with others about different issues. One such prevalent issue is the COVID-19 pandemic. Detecting and tracking topics on these kinds of issues would help governments and healthcare companies deal with this phenomenon. In this paper, we propose a novel, multi-agent, communicative clustering approach, so-called ComStreamClust for clustering sub-topics inside a broader topic, e.g., the COVID-19 and the FA CUP. The proposed approach is parallelizable, and can simultaneously handle several data-point. The LaBSE sentence embedding is used...

A scenario tree approach to multi-period project selection problem using real-option valuation method

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 56, Issue 1-4 , 2011 , Pages 411-420 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Rafiee, M ; Kianfar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Multistage stochastic programs are effective for solving long-term planning problems under uncertainty. Multi-period project portfolio selection problems can be modeled by multistage stochastic programs. These models utilize a set of scenarios and corresponding probabilities to model the multivariate random data process (costs or revenues, available budget, chance of success). For most practical problems, the optimization problem that contains all possible scenarios is too large. Due to computational complexity, this program is often approximated by a model involving a (much) smaller number of scenarios. The scenario reduction algorithms determine a subset of the initial scenario set and...

Security of multi-adjustable join schemes: separations and implications

    Abstract
Database management systems (DBMS) are one of cloud services with major applications in industry and business. In the use of such services, since the cloud service provider cannot be entrusted with the plain data, the databases are typically encrypted prior to outsourcing. One of the most challenging issues in designing these services is supporting SQL join queries on the encrypted database. The multi-adjustable join scheme (M-Adjoin) [Khazaei-Rafiee 2020], an extension of Adjoin [Popa-Zeldovich 2012 and Mironov-Segev-Shahaf 2017], is a symmetric-key primitive that supports the join queries for a list of column labels on an encrypted database. In previous works, the following security...

Private set operations over encrypted cloud dataset and applications

    Abstract
We introduce the notion of private set operations (PSO) as a symmetric-key primitive in the cloud scenario, where a client securely outsources his dataset to a cloud service provider and later privately issues queries in the form of common set operations. We define a syntax and security notion for PSO and propose a general construction that satisfies it. There are two main ingredients to our PSO scheme: an adjustable join (Adjoin) scheme (MIT-CSAIL-TR-2012-006 (2012) Cryptographic treatment of CryptDB's adjustable join. http://people.csail.mit.edu/nickolai/papers/popa-join-tr.pdf) and a tuple set (TSet) scheme (Cash, D., Jarecki, S., Jutla, C. S., Krawczyk, H., Rosu, M.-C., and Steiner, M....

Multi-period Project Portfolio Selection and Scheduling with Uncertainties

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rafiee, Majid (Author) ; Kianfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a multi-stage project portfolio selection and scheduling problem in an uncertain environment is modeled, analyzed and solved. Moreover, we investigate the situations in which a project manager is confronted to a large number of projects to be selected and scheduled while the required resources of the projects are limited and renewable. The aim is to maximize objective function which is the net present value of the profit of the projects. To solve the mentioned problem, we introduce a multi-stage stochastic programming. For the reason that, in real problems, optimization problems that included all restraints are large scale and have computational complexity, these problems are...

    Abstract
As a method of cancer treatment or improvement of cancer-related complications, external radiation therapy is prescribed by physicians, in case of detection of a tumor in a region of patient’s body. Over time, various techniques have been developed for external beam radiation therapy. Among which, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), due to its ability to adjust the intensity of radiation beams, has a higher capacity to generate appropriate dose distribution based on tumor size and volume and it is one of the most widely used techniques in cancer treatment centers. The core process in treatment planning is using appropriate computer algorithms which results in posing enough damage to...

Location and Relocation of Ambulances under Uncertainty Conditions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Firooze, Saeed (Author) ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is to provide fast medical care and to transport patients to hospitals at the earliest possible time, so as to reduce injury and fatality rate. Healthcare managers try to improve healthcare systems by reducing the response time to demands. In this thesis, we present mathematical models for the problem of location and relocation of emergency vehicles after the end of their service time or after they have returned to a hospital. We believe that implementing these models can help managers improve the performance of emergency medical services. In the first part of this study, we present a two-level deterministic optimization model considering demand...
