Analysis and Improvement of Dynamic Performance and Fault Ride-Through Capability of Wind Turbines Based on Doubly-Fed Induction Generators
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
Variable speed wind turbines (VSWTs) provide the capability of wide speed operation and independent control of active and reactive power. In contrast to the fixed speed WTs, they have higher efficiency, power quality and controllability. VSWTs are mainly divided in two categories: WTs based on doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and WTs based on full converter with permanent magnet synchronous generator.
At now, among the different alternatives to obtain VSWTs, DFIGs are the most commonly used. This is because the voltage source converter (VSC) in DFIG has to handle a fraction of the total power under steady state conditions, and thus the size and cost of the converter is reduced....

Design and Evaluation of Polymeric Hybrid FCC-BCC Lattice Structures for Enhanced Mechanical Performance
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
Throughout history, engineers have always been searching for ways to increase the strength-to-weight ratio in the design of engineering structures. Using lattice structures has been a method implemented in different applications to achieve this goal. Herein, two novel hybrid lattice structures are designed, and their compressive quasi-static mechanical behavior is evaluated experimentally and numerically. In one of the designed structures, using dual-phase strengthening, FCC unit cells are incorporated as a reinforcement phase into a BCC matrix. In the multifunctional lattice structure, FCC and BCC unit cells are combined with their central nodes connected. All of the designed structures are...
The Effect of Direct and Cross Rolling on Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Severely Deformed Aluminium
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kazeminezhad, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
Recently, the severe plastic deformation (SPD) is known as one of the most used methods in decreasing the grain size and increasing the strength of metals. In this study, aluminum 1100was subjected toconstrained groove pressing (CGP) at room temperature. The CGPed samples in nanoscale structure, with different CGPed passes were direct rolled and cross-rolled in different rolling strains. Finally, all of the samples were annealed at temperatures of 100, 200 and 300 ° C for 30 min. It was observed that with increasing number of CGP passes and rolling strain the structure became more laminate and finer. With increasing rolling strain, the cross-rolling had greater effect on the microstructure...

Analysis and data-based reconstruction of complex nonlinear dynamical systems : using the methods of stochastic processes
, Book
Springer International Publishing
2019
Abstract
This book focuses on a central question in the field of complex systems: Given a fluctuating (in time or space), uni- or multi-variant sequentially measured set of experimental data (even noisy data), how should one analyse non-parametrically the data, assess underlying trends, uncover characteristics of the fluctuations (including diffusion and jump contributions), and construct a stochastic evolution equation?
Here, the term "non-parametrically" exemplifies that all the functions and parameters of the constructed stochastic evolution equation can be determined directly from the measured data.
The book provides an overview of methods that have been developed for the analysis of...

Tipping Cascades in Complex Networks: Dynamics and Control
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimi Tabar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Tipping points occur in diverse systems in various disciplines such as ecology, climate science, economy, sociology, and engineering. Critical thresholds in system parameters or state variables at which a tiny perturbation can lead to a qualitative change in the system exist in many subsystems in complex systems. These thresholds are called tipping points, and these subsystems are called tipping elements. Additionally, many systems with tipping points can be modeled as networks of coupled multistable subsystems. Domino-like tippings are called tipping cascades. Considering that these tipping cascades are primarily unprecedented, it is essential to study the dynamics and control of these...
Capabilities, difficulties and obstacles for energy recovery from MSW’ as a sustainable option for waste management in Iran
, Article WIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment ; Vol. 186 , 16-18 December , 2014 , pp. 789-798 ; ISSN: 17433541 ; ISBN: 9781845648374 ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Increasing concerns about unbridled fossil fuel consumption and a growing generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Iran and related environmental challenges require adoption of more sustainable approaches in energy and waste management. Energy recovery from waste can play an important role to achieve environmentally sustainable development that has been defined for the country as a main policy. Iran’s growing urban population generates massive amounts of MSW that mostly end up in landfills. A population of 75 million is generating 50,000 tonnes of MSW every day that mostly are buried in landfills. Detrimental emissions from landfills and many other long-lasting environmental issues have...

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the micromixing performance of three basic types of spatial shaped micromixers. New configurations of T, Y, and oriented Y-spatial mixers were designed with change in the angles of the confluence and the outlet channel to achieve the efficient micromixing. These micromixers offer advantages that are not attainable with the typical types of these mixers. Experimental tests were carried out in the laminar flow regime and the mixing efficiency was evaluated using Villermaux/Dushman test reaction. The geometries of the channels were cylindrical with the length of 30 mm and the diameter of 800 μm. The experimental results show that the angle of outlet channel has a...

Sole versus dual-sourcing under order dependent lead-times and prices [electronic resource]
, Article Computers And Operations Research, Published in: Elsevier Journals ; Volume 36, Issue 12, December 2009, Pages 3272–3280 ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this paper, we consider a dual-sourcing model with constant demand and stochastic lead times. Two suppliers may be different in terms of purchasing prices and lead-time parameters. The ordering takes place when the inventory level depletes to a reorder level, and the order is split among two suppliers. Unlike previous works in the order splitting literature, the supply lead time between vendor and buyer as well as unit purchasing prices is considered to be order quantity dependent. The proposed model finds out the optimal reorder point, order quantity and splitting proportion, using a solution procedure. Numerical results show that neglecting the relationship between ordering batch size...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour, Majid (Supervisor)
Abstract
The growing requirements for renewable energy production lead to the development of a new series of systems, including wave and tidal energy conversion systems. Due to their sensitivity and the impact of the aggressive marine environment, the selection of the most adequate location for these systems is a major and very important task. Several factors, such as technological limitations, environmental conditions, administrative and logistic conditions, have to be taken into account in order to support the decision for best location. The aim of the present study is to provide an Atlas of IRAN Offshore Renewable Energy Resources (hereafter called ‘the Atlas’) to map out wave and tidal resources...

To Improve the Methods Using to Distinguish Congested Area in Process Plants by CFD
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rashtchian, Davoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Among probable hazards in chemical industries: vapor cloud explosion (VCE) is one of the worst and most destructive ones. More than half of the major process inci¬dents, according to the statistics, are VCEs. VCE causes the most serious consequences; therefore, it attracts many attentions to itself. Accordingly, plenty of researches have been done for the purpose of protection against VCE effects. All efforts in this field can be categorized in two different main activities; firstly, prescribing safety distances between groups of hazardous equipment and vulnerable areas, secondly, using facilities which reinforce vulnerable areas against explosion blasts. Regardless to which category is...
Low voltage ride-through capability improvement of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dips
, Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Vol. 60,Issue , 2014 , pp. 82-95 ; ISSN: 01420615 ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
This paper proposes a competent and effective scheme to enhance the ride-through capability of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dip conditions. The proposed method is realized through joint use of the rotor-side converter control and a three-phase stator damping resistor (SDR) placed in series with the stator windings. By means of an asymmetrical SDR idea, during the unbalanced voltage dip the SDR resistors are activated only in phase(s) experiencing low voltage. Then, the rotor current is controlled such that no unbalance voltage appears on the stator voltage. The proposed ride-through approach limits the peak values of the rotor inrush current, electromagnetic torque and...
Numerical Modeling of the Behavior of Base Plates with Various Degrees of Rigidity Under Cyclic Loads
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khonsari, Vahid (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Due to the important role of base plates, both in transferring forces from the structure to the foundation, and also in transferring vibrations from soil to the structure, it is necessary to have sufficient knowledge on their behaviour and performance under monotonic and cyclic loading regimes. In fact, the behaviour of the supports of any structure cannot be identified without identifying the behaviour of its base plates. Numerous configurations with/without various types of attachments have been proposed and used for base plates. In this work, altogether six commonly-used types of base plates were studied and their behaviour under monotonic and cyclic loadings was obtained using commercial...
Destination Choice Modeling For Shopping Trips; Case Study For The City of Shiraz
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Samimi, Amir (Supervisor)
Abstract
The fratar model that is one of the most common models of travel distribution has some weak points. Due to its strong tendency to existing distribution and disregarding the zonal characteristics, this model is unable to consider sudden changes in plan on the horizon. In order to identify the variables affecting the distribution of travel, using the behavioral approach is vital. For this purpose, Multinomial Logit model is used for distribution of shopping trips in the city of Shiraz. The city of Shiraz is divided into 156 zones. If all zones be considered as the choice set for each traveler, the results of model won't be efficient. To address this problem, sampling should be done based on...
