, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akbari, Sepideh (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In drilling oil well with respect to depth of several thousand meters, knowing the physical conditions of down-hole well such as temperature, pressure and stress have particular importance in prevention of possible injuries such as breaking the drill bit or increasing temperature. If these data can transfer from down-hole to bore-hole of the well, the operators can prevent from critical conditions such as intertangle of the drill-string. Currently, because of this lack of information, there are irreparable damages in oil industry annually. Based on researches, because of down-hole conditions of the well, these data can’t transfer with electromagnetic telemetry. Currently one of the data...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Honarmand, Hajar (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Drilling in oil industry, is an expensive process in produce and extract oil from well. Any mistake in drilling may cause many drawbacks for industry owners. Phisic’s quantities information at downhole like tempreture, pressure and force on bit synchronously can inform user from torrid conditions and prevent undesired events by actions like evoke bit from downhole or change at rotation velocity in drilling and finally stop operations. With attention to a lot of problems in data transport from long distance more than one kilometer from downhole, scientists believe that one of the methods to do this process is converting data gathered at the bottom hole to acoustic waves and transmit them to...

The Effect of Soli-Structure Interaction on Dynamic Characteristics of Structures with Embedded Fondation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Mohammad Taghi (Author) ; Ghannad, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Soil-structure interaction has significant effect on dynamic behavior of the super structure. This effect is usually investigated in two separate parts, i.e., the Kinematic Interaction effect and the Inertial Interaction effect. The first modifies the input ground motion to the foundation as a result of difference in soil and foundation stiffness. The later, i.e., the II effect, introduces the effect of soil flexibility and radiation of waves into the supporting medium on the response of the structure. These effects are usually considered by introducing a replacement oscillator with modified natural period and damping ratio subjected...

Simulation of Proteins at Constant pH

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Parisa (Author) ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Proteins are of fundamental importance for life on Earth and participate in virtually every process within cells. The function of a protein depends on its three dimensional structure. If this is disrupted, the protein loses its biological activity. In addition to temperature, pressure and ionic strength, pH is also an important factor that affects the configuration of proteins. Proteins contain acidic and basic residues. Variations in pH lead to changes in distribution of atomic charge, which in turn affect the stability and function of proteins. Protein folding occurs in a specific pH range, a deviation from which may facilitate misfolding or Amyloid aggregation. It is therefore necessary...

Designi an Adaptive Beamforming Algorithm, Robust Against Direction-of-Arrival Mismatch

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Mostafa (Author) ; Bastani, Mohammad Hasan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Adaptive beamforming performance is very sensitive to any mismatch between actual and presumed steering vectors of desired signal. In addition to this sensitivity, presence of desired signal in training snapshots dramatically reduces the convergence rate, as compared to the case that signal-free training snapshots are available.
The present work is aimed at proposing a new adaptive beamformer that is robust against direction-of-arrival (DOA) mismatch and has high convergence rate. This method is based on desired signal elimination from training snapshots and sub-array beamforming technique. To this end, a Blocking matrix that converts primary data to desired signal free data is...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Ali (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Train-induced vibrations may become a source of annoyance to the residential environments and disturb the vibration-sensitive instruments. This paper aims to numerically study train-induced vibrations and affecting parameters such as foundation of the building adjacent to the railway, soil stiffness value and its variation pattern in depth and the train speed. To this end, a plane strain model was developed using finite difference program, FLAC2D. In order to simulate possible material damping of soil subjected to dynamic loading, hysteretic damping is incorporated into the model. The results of analyses performed in this study showed that increasing the train speed may not lead to an...

Indoor Scene Classification by Object Detection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mazinani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Image classification is one of the most challenging issues in computer vision. One sort of such classifications is Scene Classification. To perform automatic classification reserchers used many aproches. The general approach used features directly extracted from the image, such as color and texture or features extracted by the SIFT algorithmetc. Another method is based on recognizing object of the Scene (espessially indoor scene). This method is based on finding of a limited number of prespecified objects. In the proposed method, first a window surrounding each objects, (regardless of the type of object) founded. Then the SIFT feature is extracted from that window. All features (corresponding...

Regarding the numerous casualties and financial losses due to intense earthquakes, the ductility is considered of the main importance in addition to stability, stiffness, and strength criteria of the structure’s connections. In order to enhance the seismic behavior of the structures in such severe earthquakes, design codes for steel structures have suggested special types of connections. Among them, bolted end plate connection is considered a conventional type of connection used for creating ductile semi-rigid connection. In this study, in order to simulate the behavior of this joint, a 3-D finite element model is developed in Abaqus software, in which the inelastic behavior of the materials...

Estimating Price Elasticity of Gasoline Demand Using Transaction-Level Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Pegah (Author) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most widely discussed parameters in energy economics is the price elasticity of gasoline demand due to its substantial implications for taxation, energy efficiency, and environmental policies. This paper aims to estimate the price elasticity of gasoline demand using a novel source of data. The data is from Iran, in the early months of 2014. Vehicles get a quota of 60 liters per month as subsidized gasoline at a lower price. The quota is transferable to the next months if it has not been consumed. All of the information about each pumping transaction is gathered in a centralized database, assigning a unique fuel card to each vehicle. Consequently, the structure of the market provides...

In this...

Dynamic & Vibration Analysis of AFM Probe Affected by the Non Uniform Potential Field

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kahrobaiyan, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Atomic force microscope (AFM) has a significant capability of imaging surface topography on an atomic scale. It is also widely used for Nanolithography in MEMS/NEMS (micro/nanoelectromechanical systems). Conventional AFMs consist of a cantilever with a sharp conical or pyramidal tip located at the free end of the cantilever that plays an important role in AFM measurements. Scanning across a surface, AFM interacts with the sample surface through its tip. Although the dynamic behavior of the AFM cantilever is complicated, the researchers have been interested in studying AFM dynamic behavior because it has a great influence on the surface imaging process. The imaging rate and contrast of...

Observer-Based Controller Design for Nonlinear Fractional Order Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani Nooshabadi, Ali (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, an adaptive controller design for nonlinear fractional order systems in the strict-feedback form has been investigated. The system is subject to unknown dynamics, unmeasured state variables, quantized input and output, and input nonlinearity. A linear observer is used to solve the problem of unmeasured state variables. The fuzzy logic system is used to estimate the unknown functions, and instead of updating all the regressor weights, only the upper bound of their norms is updated, which significantly reduces the computational load. In the controller design, limitations due to the bandwidth of data transmission have been considered by applying quantizers in the input and output...

Automatic Highlight Detection in Football Videos using Audio and Video Information

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Azkia, Ali (Author) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, with the spread of various videos especially sports video and availability of them, the need for automated methods for search and retrieval of concepts from videos is strongly felt. On the other hand, summarizing video in order to making significant parts of them available is very important. One of the broadest scope that researchers have provided methods for extracting semantic concepts, is soccer videos. Often to extract high-level events, we need a definition and use of intermediate concepts. In this thesis "replay", "audio highlights" and "view type" are used to extract important events in the game. Here, two new methods are introduced for replay detection and view type...

Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks, Using Machine Learning Approaches

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gheiby, Sanaz (Author) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gene regulatory network consists of a set of genes; interacting with each other via their protein products. Such interations lead to the regulation of the genes’ production rate. A breakdown in the regulatory process, may lead to some kinds of diseases. Therefore, understanding the gene regulatory process, is beneficial for both diagnosis and treatment. In this thesis, gene regulatory networks are modeled by the means of dynamic Bayesian networks. We have used sampling based methods, in order to learn the network structure. As these methos have a very high computational cost; we have used a correlation test to prune the search space. This way, an undirected network skeleton is obtained; for...
