    Abstract
In recent years due to the advances in semiconductor technology and the ability to implement small-scale manufacturing, communication at 60 GHz band receive more attention than ever has been. The use of this frequency band is not only about 7-9 GHz unlicensed broadband access provided, but getting smaller devices make it possible to use multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver, and thus taking advantage of multiple input – multiple output systems. Antennas used in these systems should have features such as small size , low weight, high gain and bandwidth and also they should keep their high efficiency and gainat high frequency range (about a few GHz ). To achieve these features...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Lak, Mehdi (Author) ; Assempour, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study presents an image processing technique for automatic strain and stress measurement in sheet metals. In order to measure the strain automatically, the sheet blank is electrochemically etched to create circular and rectangular grids. After press forming of the sheet, circular grids are deformed into elliptical grids and rectangular grids are deformed into quadrilateral grids. Different photos are captured for using in image processing technique. These photos are taken in different positions. Finally strain can be measured by processing these photos and the stress is obtained by using Levy-Mises flow rule. In this study, three methods of image processing technique are simultaneously...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Takhshid, Reza (Author) ; Bahrani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Shojaie, Razieh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
To keep in line with the day to day advancements in the fields of computational linguistics and natural language processing, and the growing attention of researchers to semantic processing, this thesis presents the design and preparation of a Persian semantic corpus using Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR). This semantic representation pairs each sentence with a single rooted, acyclic, directed graph, which is human and computer readable. Moreover, this representation paves the way for the creation of large semantic corpora. In order to bring such benefits to Persian, in this thesis we present solutions for representing Persian sentences in the framework of AMR. Moreover, a corpus of 150...

    Ezafe Recognition Using Dependency Parsing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nassajian, Minoo (Author) ; Bahrani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Shojaei, Razieh (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ezafe is regarded as one of the most controversial and challenging issues in different Persian Language Processing (NLP) fields. It is recognized and pronounced but usually not written. So, this results in a high degree of ambiguity in Persian texts. Dependency grammar plays a significant role in optimization problems. So, to recognize the position of Ezafe in a sentence, this grammar is used in this current study. This method helps speed up computer operations and use low memory. Within this framework, first we take a close look at Ezafe distribution in Persian text. We use Uppsala Persian Dependency Corpus (2015) to analyze parsed sentences. The Ezafe constructions under study include...

A Semantic Valency Lexicon for Persian Predicates and Visualization of their Relations

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salimifar, Saeedeh (Author) ; Khosravi Zadeh, Parvaneh (Supervisor) ; Shojaei, Razieh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The highest and most difficult layer of Natural Language Processing, is the understanding of meaning. As a result, lexicons and annotated corpora are of the utmost importance in this area. However, the lack of such semantic resources, especially in Abstract Meaning Representation (AMR), is one of the main issues in this field for Persian Language. This work by modeling PropBank, a semantic valency lexicon for English predicates, is the first step towards building such lexicons for Persian Language with the focus on AMR. Thus, a guideline describing how to annotate the Persian predicates is provided which first evaluates the common structures between the two languages and then focuses on the...

Persian Causative/Inchoative Alternation from an LFG Perspective

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jamshidi, Naser (Author) ; Khosravizadeh, Parvaneh (Supervisor) ; Shojaee, Razieh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study attempts to describe and analyze Persian speakers’ linguistic knowledge of different types of causative and inchoative constructions within the framework of Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG). In order to do so, different studies on Persian causative alternations within theories other than LFG as well as causative alternations in other languages within LFG are reviewed. Next, different types of causative constructions are categorized conceptually and structurally after they are extracted from Bijankhan corpus (2005). Then they are analyzed syntactically and semantically. In this regard, we represent syntactic and semantic structures based on LFG as a monostratal theory. After that,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Lak, Behzad (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sedimentation tanks are one of the important and costly stages of water treatment process in which remained particles from previous stages settle down due to gravity force. In this research, the hydrodynamics of secondary settling tanks without and in the presence of particles is numerically investigated using VOF method in order to simulate the interphase using RNG k-ε for turbulence modelling. The simulations are performed by means of open-source code OpenFoam, and the code is developed to model particles in the flow. The calculated velocity profiles using VOF method show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Comparing the concentration profiles with experiments shows the...

A Machine Learning Approach for Memory Resource Management in GPUs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi Lak, Masoud (Author) ; Sarbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, GPUs are used in applications such as graph computations and deep learning that require large data processing. These applications necessitate transferring a considerable amount of data between memory and computational units, which increases the average memory access latency. On the other hand, the poor performance of the L1 cache causes many reservation fails, resulting in increased energy consumption and reduced performance. In this thesis, we propose Smart Cache, a new smart cache management in GPUs. This approach models the cache replacement problem as a sequence labeling problem. Then, a machine learning model that combines support vector machine with one-hot encoding and...

    Abstract
Downscaling trend in CMOS technology on the one hand and reducing supply voltage of the circuits on the other hand, make devices more susceptive to soft errors such as SEU. Latch circuits are prone to be affected by SEUs. In this article, we propose a new circuit design of latch using redundancy with the aim of immunity against SEUs. According to simulation results, our design not only guaranties full immunity, but also has the advantage of occupying less area and consuming much less power and performance penalty in comparison with other SEU immune latches. The simulation results show that our solution has 65.76% reduction in power and about 50.65% reduction in propagation delay in...

Persian Compound Verb Database with the Verbal Element: “Shodan”

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemnejad, Zeinab (Author) ; Khosravizadeh, Parvaneh (Supervisor) ; Shojaie, Razieh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Compound verbs (CVs) and its components, have been widely discussed in previous linguistics' researches as one of the most important and fundamental constructions of Persian language. Nevertheless most of the arguments and assumptions in those researches align with each other and studying CVs from another aspect with a different viewpoint has not been considered very much in order to solve nodes and issues in this area. We have endeavored in this thesis to review and criticize the portrayed definitions of the CVs, reconsider this construction and the syntactical and semantical roles of verbal and non-verbal elements in this combination from another point of view, and revise the previous...

Soft error rate estimation for combinational logic in presence of single event multiple transients

    , Article Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers ; Vol. 23, issue. 6 , 2014 Rajaei, R ; Tabandeh, M ; Fazeli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Fast and accurate estimation of soft error rate in VLSI circuits is an essential step in a soft error tolerant ASIC design. In order to have a cost effective protection against radiation effects in combinational logics, an accurate and fast method for identification of most susceptive gates and paths is needed. In this paper, an efficient, fast and accurate method for soft error propagation probability (SEPP) estimation is presented and its performance is evaluated. This method takes into account all three masking factors in multi cycles. It also considers multiple event transients as a new challenge in soft error tolerant VLSI circuit design. Compared with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation-based...

Low cost soft error hardened latch designs for nano-scale CMOS technology in presence of process variation

    , Article Microelectronics Reliability ; Volume 53, Issue 6 , June , 2013 , Pages 912-924 ; 00262714 (ISSN) Rajaei, R ; Tabandeh, M ; Fazeli, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, two Low cost and Soft Error Hardened latches (referred to as LSEH1 and LSEH2) are proposed and evaluated. The proposed latches are fully SEU immune, i.e. they are capable of tolerating all particle strikes to any of their nodes. Moreover, they can mask Single Event Transients (SETs) occurring in combinational logics and reaching the input of the latches. We have compared our SEU/SET-tolerant latches with some well-known previously proposed soft error tolerant latches. To evaluate the proposed latches, we have done a set of SPICE simulations. The simulation results trough comparisons with other hardened latches reveal that the proposed latches not only have more robustness but...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose two novel soft error tolerant latch circuits namely HRPU and HRUT. The proposed latches are both capable of fully tolerating single event upsets (SEUs). Also, they have the ability of enduring single event multiple upsets (SEMUs). Our simulation results show that, both of our HRPU and HRUT latches have higher robustness against SEMUs as compared with other recently proposed radiation hardened latches. We have also explored the effects of process and temperature variations on different design parameters such as delay and power consumption of our proposed latches and other leading SEU tolerant latches. Our simulation results also show that, compared with the reference...

Quantum discrepancy: A non-commutative version of combinatorial discrepancy

    , Article Electronic Journal of Combinatorics ; Volume 27, Issue 2 , 2020 , Pages 1-29 Alishahi, K ; Rajaee, M ; Rajaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a notion of quantum discrepancy, a non-commutative version of combinatorial discrepancy which is defined for projection systems, i.e. finite sets of orthogonal projections, as non-commutative counterparts of set systems. We show that besides its natural algebraic formulation, quantum discrepancy, when restricted to set systems, has a probabilistic interpretation in terms of determinantal processes. Determinantal processes are a family of point processes with a rich algebraic structure. A common feature of this family is the local repulsive behavior of points. Alishahi and Zamani (2015) exploit this repelling property to construct low-discrepancy point...

    Abstract
Demand for electricity, due to the fast growth in urbanization and industrialization, is on the rapid rise. Load shift is a basic method for demand side management (DSM) that can be used by the central controller in buildings and can lead to the maximum use of renewable energy sources, maximum economic benefits, and reduction of peak demand. This paper proposes an algorithm for shifting the flexible loads of four selected appliances with respect to boundary limits for each appliance. A standalone four-story building with different number of occupants is considered to evaluate this algorithm. The algorithm was trained on Richardson model to minimize two objectives including aggregated demand,...
