Nonlinear Vibrations of Inclined Timoshenko Beam on Pasternak Foundation with Moving Force
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kargarnovin, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the first part of this thesis, the linear and nonlinear governing differential equations of motion of an inclined Euler-Bernoulli beam are used by tacking into account the effect of beam’s mid-plane stretching. Then nonlinear coupled governing partial differential equations of vibrations by including rotation of cross section, longitudinal and transverse displacements in the Timoshenko beam theory on Pasternak foundation under the act of moving concentrated force and as wll as moving mass are drived. To do this the energy method (Hamilton’s principle) based on the large deflection theory in conjuncture with the von-Karman relations is used. These equations are solved by applying...
Online Reconstruction of Neutron Flux Distribution using BNPP Operating Data
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghofrani, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor) ; Raji, Mohammad Hossein (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
The safety and optimal performance of nuclear reactors require online monitoring in the core. One of the most important requirements of core monitoring is the knowledge at all time of the neutron flux distribution in the core. The present M.Sc thesis describes a method which avoids the solution of time dependent neutron diffusion equation and uses online readings of the fixed in-core neutron detectors to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) neutron flux distribution. The essential idea of nodal synthesis method is separation of time and space dependence of the neutron flux distribution. The time dependent section of the flux distribution is determined by neutron detector readings and space...
Management of Storage Resources, Power, and Performance in Enterprise Storage Systems Using Prefetching Method
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Asadi, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, enterprise storage systems are widely used in data centers such as databases, servers, and bank institutes. Due to mechanical activity of disk drives, these systems are one of the most power consumptive components in data centers. Prefetching and RAID, which are employed to enhance performance, are widely used in data storage systems. These two methods, however, impose significant energy overhead to the system due to the increased disk activity. In this thesis, we first elaborate shortcomings of prefetching and RAID methods. Then, we propose a new energy efficient and RAID-compatible prefetching method (LPTAP), which aims at improving performance and energy consumption. To evaluate...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Morad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Kebriaee, Azadeh (Supervisor) ; Ramezani, Ali Reza (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
An injector is one of the most important components of the two components chemical propulsion system used in satellite control. The design of an injector is a complicated and time-consuming process and is largely dependent on laboratory data. In this study, the spray characteristics obtained from a small scale swirl injector under different operating conditions have been experimentally measured in a laboratory environment, such as the injector discharge coefficient, spray cone angle, and the distribution of droplets in the field. To calculate the discharge coefficient, the flow rate of the injector has been measured for different operating pressures. The shooting method and image processing...
A Novel Approach to Mixed Model and Goal Coordination of Large-Scale Systems
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Sadati, Naser (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, a new approach is proposed for two-level optimal control of large-scale nonlinear systems. In this approach, by defining some parameters as coordination parameters the overall system is decomposed into several interactive subsystems, where the optimization problem redefines for each one of them. The obtained sub-problems which are in the form of standard optimal control problems with lower dimension are solved in the first level. To obtain the overall optimal solution, coordination of the first level solutions is performed in the second level. For solving the first level problems, the indirect gradient and Newton methods are used. The gradient method is applied in the first...
Interval Determination for Coefficients of a Characteristic Polynomial in Order to Restrict the Location of the Roots
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of usual criterion which detrimines how much two polynomials are close to each other is smallness of the norm of vector that is formed from subtraction of their corresponding coefficients. Using this criterion, in this dissertation we become involved in investigation of two similar problems. First one is determination of the closest non-Hurwitz polynomial to a Hurwitz one. During this activity, the robustness margin of Hurwitz polynomial whose coefficients are subject to uncertainty is determined. The second problem is determination of the closest Hurwitz polynomial to another polynomial which is not Hurwitz. Unlike to the first problem, this problem is extremely hard. The solution of...
Multi Objective Topology Design based on Moving Morphable Component and Machine Learning
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khodaygan, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, the additive manufacturing process is one of the most important manufacturing processes. In the additive manufacturing process, the mass of the parts is directly related to the printing duration, in addition to the costs of consumables. On the other hand, the use of lighter parts in industries, such as the aviation, is one of the important requirements of those industries, and topology optimization is needed to reduce the consumables and the mass of the parts. Also, since in the optimal design of engineering parts, more than one design objective is usually considered, the multi-objective optimization of topology is of great importance. The Moving Morphable Components is one of the new...
Multi-Objective Simulation Optimization Within MCDM Framework: A Bi-Objective Inventory System
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akhavan Niaki, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
Abstract
System design, regardless of the type of system being considered, needs to determine parametersto maximize the system performance criteria. One of solutions of finding best system performance is using simulation optimization. In real world, end users have models with more than one objective and these objectives are conflicting objectives. There are a lot ofmeta-heuristic algorithms to solve multi-objective optimization problems. NSGA-II is one of the most popular proposed meta-heuristic algorithms to solve multi-objective problems. Because of using average to evaluate solutions, process of selecting new generations in this algorithm is such that in every generation some of suitable solutions...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Manzuri Shalmani, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) play a role in the field of information technology for data gathering purposes. In general, each WSN contains many inexpensive wireless nodes, each capable of collecting, processing, and storing environmental information, and communicating with neighboring nodes. WSNs have been successfully used in different applications such as object tracking, emergency guiding, and environment monitoring. The popular WSN platforms in real-world applications are MICAz, Tmote , and Dust Network. Two standards, namely the ZigBee and IEEE 802.15.4 standards are projected to provide interoperability of different platforms, and to define physical, MAC, and network...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ramezani, Moshen (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
The emergence of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) provides the opportunities to ameliorate traffic congestion while increasing safety. AVs, using the vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication, can gather and infer the information of adjacent vehicles and traffic flow. The objective of this article is to develop a cooperative control method to manipulate AVs longitudinal and lateral movements in order to enhance macroscopic features of the mixed traffic flows. In this paper, we propose a potential function to control longitudinal movement of AVs considering their physical constraints. The developed controller provides an optimal, collision-free car following by minimizing the...

The Study of Eliminating Gender Gap in Iran Labor Market on Participation Rate of Married Urban Women
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
The low female labor force participation rate in the Iranian labor market relative to the global average and even to countries that do not differ significantly from the socio-economic characteristics of our country is one of the important questions of the Iranian labor market. In this study, we seek to answer the question of whether the economic participation rate of married women will increase if the gender gaps in wages, job findings and job losses among women and men are eliminated in the Iranian labor market. To answer this question using household expenditure and income data and labor force data, we show that between the two categories of occupations, in terms of the share of women's...
Controlling the Operational Conditions of a Greenhouse
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Vafa, Ehsan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Researchers have paid more attention to greenhouse cultivation, due to the exacerbation of food and water crisis. Higher production with lower cost could be achieved through greenhouse climate control (temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentration). However, greenhouse climate control is a challenging task, because greenhouses have highly interactive nonlinear dynamics and model uncertainties and are subject to input saturation. In light of the fact that Iran is a country with a warm and arid climate, tunnel greenhouses equipped with evaporative cooling system are very common in Iran. Accordingly, this type of greenhouse is considered for modelling, simulation and control in this...
Design of Transient Identification Tool using Deep Learning in PWR Nuclear Power Plant (case study: Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant)
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Vosoughi, Naser (Supervisor) ; Ghofrani, Mohammad Bagher (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
In a nuclear power plant, transients are initiated for various reasons such as equipment failure or external disturbances. A transient should be identified as quickly as possible so that countermeasures can be taken to reduce its negative consequences. Due to the large number of parameters that can be monitored in nuclear power plants, the time limit for interpreting the information, and the stressful conditions of the incident, it will be very difficult to detect transients by the plant operators. Therefore, the development of operator support tools to identify transients is of great importance in the safe operation of nuclear power plants. Various studies have shown that data-driven...

The Effect of Increasing The Value of Natural Gas Production on Property Value, Wages, Unemployment Rate and Birth Rate in The United States of America (2000-2011)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the present study, the effects of increasing the value of shale gas production, either due to increased production or price increases, have been studied on economic variables such as employment, wage, property value and the number of births. In this regard, the data for each of these variables was used at the county level in the United States of America between 2000 and 2011. In order to estimate the desired effects, counties are divided into two types of boom and non-boom counties. The findings indicate that increasing natural gas production will lead to more employment and wage growth in boom counties than non-boom counties. Also, during the period of increasing production, the value of...
Inflationary Permanent and Long-Term Positive Interest Rate Shocks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
Co-movement between inflation and nominal interest in response to an interest rate shock, dubbed neo-fisherianism, has been the subject of contentious debate since the advent of non-inflationary ZLB environment. We design an economic model rich with banking features to understand the economic responses to permanent and long-term interest rate shocks. We find that responses to a permanent positive interest rate shock depend on the monetary authorities’ speculation of the new long-term inflation rate, with the most probable outcome being a permanent increase in inflation. Responses to a long-term positive interest rate shock depict an increase and then decrease in inflation. We also discover...
