, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor) ; Maghsoudi, Vida (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
Xanthan is a water-soluble anionic polysaccharide that is produced by anaerobic fermentation using the bacterium Xanthomonas campstris. Xanthan is used in various industries, including food industry and oil industry because of its appropriate rheological properties. For this reason, various studies have been done on the production and recovery of xanthan. In this study conditions for recovery of xanthan gum were investigated and optimized by response surface methodology. Initially xanthan production under optimal conditions that determined in previous studies i.e. YM broth at 30 ⁰C without pH control was performed. After production, the gum separation was investigated using food solvents...

Abstract
The performance of friction dampers to mitigate the wave-induced vibrations in jacket-type offshore platforms has been investigated in this study. Due to the random nature of ocean waves, a full stochastic analysis method has been used to evaluate the response of the structures equipped with these devices. A stochastic linearization technique has also been used to take the nonlinear behavior of these hysteretic dampers into account. At last, the developed mathematical formulation has been applied to evaluate the response of realistic models, and to find out the optimal values for the adjustable parameters of the friction dampers to dissipate the wave induced vibrations of the platforms. ©...

Abstract
In the restructured power markets, price of electricity has been the key of all activities in the power market. Accurately and efficiently forecasting electricity price becomes more and more important. Therefore in this paper, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model is designed for short term price forecasting of electricity in the environment of restructured power market. The proposed ANN model is a four-layered perceptron neural network, which consists of, input layer, two hidden layers and output layer. Instead of conventional back propagation (BP) method, Levenberg- Marquardt BP (LMBP) method has been used for the ANN training to increase the speed of convergence. Matlab is used for...
Semiactive viscous tensile bracing system
, Article Journal of Structural Engineering ; Volume 135, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 425-436 ; 07339445 (ISSN) ; Bakhshi, A ; Golafshani, A.A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Structural control using energy dissipater devices is emerging as a heavily researched strategy in earthquake engineering. Among several control systems, semiactive control is usually possible and efficient. In this research, a semiactive energy dissipating bracing system based on a viscous damper is proposed. In the conventional bracing systems, it is assumed that the braces can buckle under compression. Therefore, a semiactive on-off brace strategy is implemented to improve the conventional brace performance. Further, an energy absorbing mechanism is implemented. In the proposed system, the buckling of the member is prevented by implementing a one-way valve device. The permanent story...

Abstract
By using the normalised least mean squared (NLMS) algorithm, a semi-active multi-variable adaptive controller is designed for a seismically excited structure. There is no need for a large power supply. A number of valves and battery size low-power supplies will suffice. The valves control the amount of flow of a fluid through bypass on-off orifice channels in installed energy dissipating mechanisms. Each mechanism is composed of a piston attached to a A-shaped chevron wind-bracing on each floor and to a cylinder attached to the upper floor. Adaptive controller parameters are estimated by the LMS optimiser, in order to search for optimal non-classical damping coefficients of the dissipating...
Effects of grain geometry on pulse-triggered combustion instability in rocket motors
, Article Journal of Propulsion and Power ; Volume 18, Issue 1 , 2002 , Pages 123-130 ; 07484658 (ISSN) ; Farshchi, M ; Ghassemi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Grain geometry is an important factor affecting the stability envelop of solid rocket motors. This paper presents a series of subscale tactical motor firings, clearly showing the effect of combustion chamber internal geometry on stability. Three types of grain cartridges were used in these motors: a circular perforation (CP) and two variations of a seven-pointed star. Combination of these three basic grains produced motors that have completely different internal geometries. A polyurethane-based 81% solids composite propellant was used in all tests. This marginally stable propellant has a nominal burning rate of 7.1 mm/s for the metalized formulation that contains 7% aluminum powder and 5.7...

Abstract
In this paper, a semi-active multivariable adaptive controller is designed for a framed structure under a seismic disturbance using a filtered-x NLMS optimizer. Actuator and large power supply are not required, since just some valves and a battery-size power supply are sufficient for controlling the amount of hydraulic fluid flow through the by-pass on off-orifice channel in an energy dissipating system, which consists of a piston attached to Λ-shaped wind bracing of the building and a cylinder attached to the upper floor. It is assumed that only a rough finite element model of the structure is available. In addition, in order to search for optimal non-classical viscous damper coefficients,...

Abstract
With increasing the presence of co-and tri-generating units, energy hub operators are encouraged to optimally schedule the available energy resources in an economic way. This scheduling needs to be run in an online manner due to the uncertainties in energy prices and demands. In this paper, the real-time scheduling problem of energy hubs is formulated in a dynamic pricing market. The energy hubs interaction is modeled as an exact potential game to optimize each energy hub’s payments to the electricity and gas utilities, as well as the customers’ satisfaction from energy consumption. The potential game approach enables us to study the existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium (NE) and...

Abstract
A large number of offshore platforms of various types have been installed in deep or shallow waters throughout the world. These structures are mainly made of tubular members which are interconnected by using tubular joints. In tubular frames, joints may exhibit considerable flexibility in both elastic and plastic range of response. The resulting flexibility may have marked effects on the overall behavior of offshore platforms. This paper investigates the effects of joint flexibility on local and global behavior of tubular framed structures in linear range of response. A new joint flexibility element is developed on the basis of flexibility matrix and implemented in a finite-element program to...

Abstract
The development of damage detection techniques for offshore jacket structures is vital for preventing catastrophic events. This paper applies a frequency response based method for the purpose of structural health monitoring. In this approach, the concept of a minimum rank perturbation theory is used. The feasibility of using a finite number of sensors and its effect on damage detection capabilities is investigated. In addition, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated in the case of multiple damages. The aforementioned points are illustrated using the numerical study of a two dimensional jacket platform
A New Practical Approach for Nonlinear Static Analysis of Jacket Type Offshore Platforms With Special Attention To Pile-Soil-Structure Interaction
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the most important elements of performance-based seismic engineering elements is precision in determination of seismic displacement demand evaluation. Although seismic demands which are estimated by utilizing non-linear dynamic analysis are most effective, but with regards to inherent complexities of these methods and demands for time-consuming calculations , non-¬linear static methods seems to be an appropriate representative and is recently considered by engineers. In countries with oil resources including Iran, offshore jacket platforms are among outstanding structures being considered. Inasmuch as high design and execution expenses of these structures and also important role of...
Output-Only Modal Identification of an Offshore Jacket Platform
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Extracting modal parameters is necessary for future vibration-based health monitoring studies of the structures. Due to the reason that it is difficult to measure the input excitation forces acting on a real large structure in its operational condition, it is preferable to use the output-only methods which estimate the modal model by using responses data only. Also, the output-only dynamic testing has advantages of being inexpensive since no equipment is needed to excite the structure and the service condition does not have to be interrupted. This paper presents the results of modal identification of an offshore jacket platform using output-only methods with the assumption of ambient...
Fatigue Damage Effects on the Ultimate Strength of Fixed Leg Offshore Platform in Persian Gulf Extreme Environmental Condition
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, a novel probabilistic framework named Probabilistic Spectral Fatigue Analysis (PSFA) will be introduced for the purpose of assessing the performance of jacket offshore platforms under high-cyclic short-waves fatigue degradation. This method can take into account the uncertainties in three main elements consisting of material properties, sea state parameters and collapse capacity of structure. The main advantage of PSFA approach is the ability to recognize the fatigue failure scenarios and specifies the limit state function of critical members as a super-branch or sub-branch of those scenarios. Therefore, a new and accurate method is proposed for combination of scenarios’...
Study of Existing Sensors for the Diagnosis of Common Damages in Jacket Offshore Platforms
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Offshore platforms are the most important and enormous wealth of each country that these structures are in situation thatthelikelihoodof damageinhigh. With considering this pointthatplatformsaresubjected to oscillatinglateralloads, so the occurrenceand growth offatigue crack sinthe misvery common. These cracks are always seen in jacket connections, cause these connections are bearing large forces and have massive welding and the presence ofresidualstresses. The fatigue crack caused negligible change in stiffness of connections and in consequence insignificant change in stiffness of structure; So for this reason, they are difficult to detect in global methods. Fiber optic sensors and...
Analytical Studies on Vibration Control of Offshore Jacket Platforms with Hybrid Damping Systems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Employing dampers to control wave-induced and seismic vibrations of offshore jacket platforms is an attractive method in order to mitigate fatigue and seismic damage. However, adjustable parameters of a damper are designed by considering only one type of environmental loads; either normal-condition load or extreme-condition load. So, it is important to investigate effectiveness of damping system, for both of two main categories of environmental loads. Also it is ideal for the system to have an acceptable performance in both normal and extreme conditions. The idea investigated in the current study is to use a friction damper device (FDD) and a tuned mass damper (TMD) simultaneously in...
Damage Detection and Structure Health Monitoring With Hybrid Dynamic Methods
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
structures during their service life continually accumulate damage as a result of the action of various environmental forces. Clearly the development of robust techniques for early damage detection is crucial to avoid the possible occurrence of catastrophic structural failure. In a big picture we can divide process into two subcategories: first – we need modal properties of structure. In this case we install several motion sensors on structure and collect their data. Then use a group of methods named as System Identification Process to discover dynamic properties of structure as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Three famous system identification method have been used in this thesis and...
Study of Pattern of Sensor Installation for Analysis of Offshore Jacket Behavior
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, many offshore jacket platforms have been built in all over the world for excavating oil and gas. Due to cost of construction and maintenance, they are considered as national assets. Jacket platforms are always under various types of loads in their time life, so they cause some damages to them. Hence, on time damage detection can prevent possible extravagant costs of repair and reconstruction. Because many jacket platforms are in Iran, this issue can be very important.Structural health monitoring (SHM) improvised to ensure safety and detect damages of structures uses sensors. They transfer data received from structures to the computers in order that after interpretation of data,...
Probabalistic Damage Detection of Ofshore Platforms
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
High construction and installation costs of offshore platforms, and also harsh environments in which they operate, make health monitoring of these structures more important. Conventional methods to solve the health monitoring problem are deterministic, whereas much uncertainties are imposed to the problem. In most methods of health monitoring methods we try to identify natural frequencies and mode shapes of structures by using its dynamic response. This set of data is then compared to results of modal analysis performed on a finite element model of structure in order to detect any possible damage. In deterministic methods each response of structure is pertained to one damage state, in a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
Offshore platforms are one of the most important structures in oil-rich countries, so that their economic benefit makes it very expensive to stop their usage. Therefore, it is essential that their performance is not disrupted by earthquake or the tidal waves made by severe storms. According to statistics many of the offshore platforms of their design life pass and need an important loss inspection. The assessment of existing platforms is a relatively new process. The lack of comprehensive standard creates some difficulty in establishing performance requirements, on a case by case basis depending upon the risks associated with the future operations of the platform. In this study the criteria...
