    Abstract
This paper presents an attempt to control the chaotic behavior of Rayleigh-Bénard convection system in weakly elastic fluids. In this article, a nonlinear model is presented which fundamentally refers to a model introduced by Khayat. The nonlinear model has chaotic behavior which is controlled by using sliding mode method. In the presence of uncertainty for some parameters of the model, a controller is designed to stabilize the dynamic of the system on the desired trajectory. Different simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed controller in tracking different desired trajectories. ©2009 IEEE

Design and Manufacturing of Intelligent Speed Hump

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rashedi, Mohammad (Author) ; Saadat Foumani, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The goal of using speed humps is to reduce the velocity of cars to allowable value. Reducing the speed more than necessary before arriving at the hump, causes losing kinetic energy whose compensation needs consuming more fuel. In fact, the total fuel consumption of vehicles is noticeable and it expresses the need for allowable speed definition to prevent wasting fuel. In this project, using different methods in engineering design and by defining allowable speed, an intelligent speed hump is designed and selected from different patterns which may remain protuberant or become like the road surface in level. The parts considered for this hump are selected simple to lower the cost of...

Low-velocity Impact Response of FML Beams with Considering Plasticity of Metal

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rashedi, Hossein (Author) ; Koochakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis an analytical model is applied to the dynamic response of fiber-metal laminate beams subjected to low-velocity impact. By using quasi-static consider-tions, a static model is developed using first order shear deformation beam theory and minimum total potential energy. In the next step, this static model is applied to the one degree of freedom non-linear spring-mass system for developing a model to predict dynamic response of low-velocity impact with the inclusion of material plasticity. By new explicit and simple expression, load-deflection curve, velocity-deflection curve, force-time history and deflection-time history can be derived. By using this analytical approach...

    Abstract
In this study, three PE100 polyethylene materials with fairly different short chain branch distributions were used to characterize the relation between thermal properties and creep test failure time. The samples were thermally characterized using isothermal and non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The three resins showed different behavior after fitting on the Avrami equation. N-100J2 sample, in which short chain branches (SCBs) are located on longer molecule chains, has a lower chain mobility and higher crystallization time, while N-100J1 has the opposite crystallization properties. Also, these samples had different Avrami index, n. Microstructural evaluation of these...

    Abstract
Black PE100 compounds were prepared using a co-rotating twin screw extruder by addition of carbon black masterbatches containing 35-40 wt% carbon black and different polymer carriers to a pipe grade PE100 material with bimodal molecular weight distribution. Different properties of carbon black masterbatches and PE100 black compounds were evaluated using thermal, rheological and mechanical tests. Rheological results indicated an inverse correlation between melt flow index (MFI) of masterbatch samples and storage modulus, complex viscosity and shear viscosity of black compounds, while flow instabilities of compounds were also postponed to higher shear rates. TGA indicated that masterbatch with...

    Abstract
The human motor system is organized for execution of various motor tasks in a different and flexible manner. The kinetic redundancy in the human musculoskeletal system is a significant property by which the central nervous system achieves many complementary goals. An equilibrium-based biomechanical model of isometric three-dimensional exertions of trunk muscles has been developed. Following the definition and role of the uncontrolled manifold, the kinetic redundancy concept is explored in mathematical terms. The null space of the kinetically redundant system when a certain joint moment and/or stiffness are needed is derived and discussed. The aforementioned concepts have been illustrated,...

    Abstract
A hallmark of more advanced models is their higher details of trunk muscles represented by a larger number of muscles. The question is if in reality we control these muscles individually as independent agents or we control groups of them called "synergy". To address this, we employed a 3-D biomechanical model of the spine with 18 trunk muscles that satisfied equilibrium conditions at L4/5, with different cost functions. The solutions of several 2-D and 3-D tasks were arranged in a data matrix and the synergies were computed by using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) algorithms. Variance accounted for (VAF) was used to evaluate the number of synergies that emerged by the analysis, which...

    Abstract
Nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP) constitutes a critical health challenge that impacts millions of people worldwide with devastating health and socioeconomic consequences. In today’s clinical settings, practitioners continue to follow conventional guidelines to categorize NSLBP patients based on subjective approaches, such as the STarT Back Screening Tool (SBST). This study aimed to develop a sensor-based machine learning model to classify NSLBP patients into different subgroups according to quantitative kinematic data, i.e., trunk motion and balance-related measures, in conjunction with STarT output. Specifically, inertial measurement units (IMU) were attached to the trunks of ninety-four...

    Abstract
Human movement analysis is an important part of biomechanics and rehabilitation, for which many measurement systems are introduced. Among these, wearable devices have substantial biomedical applications, primarily since they can be implemented both in indoor and outdoor applications. In this study, a Trunk Motion System (TMS) using printed Body‐Worn Sensors (BWS) is designed and developed. TMS can measure three‐dimensional (3D) trunk motions, is lightweight, and is a portable and non‐invasive system. After the recognition of sensor locations, twelve BWSs were printed on stretchable clothing with the purpose of measuring the 3D trunk movements. To integrate BWSs data, a neural network data...

Calculation of the Energy Release Rate of Nano-Cracks in FCC Materials Via the Many Body Atomic Scale FEM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ostad Hossein, Alireza (Author) ; Mohammadi Shodja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the classical continuum theory fails to deal with the problems associated with defects, stress concentrators, and relevant deformation phenomena in solids, alternative approaches that can detect the atomistic nature of materials' fracture are required. The deficiency of the capture the size effect which yields delusively high values for some components of the stress field right on the edge of the stress concentrators, and its weakness in describing the complex interaction between small inhomogeneities, cracks and the like when they are only a few nanometers apart, are among some of the disadvantages of the classical approach. In recent years, however, atomistic methods are emerging to...

    Abstract
Aluminum Bronzes have many applications in marine environments. These alloys suffer from both hot cracking and cold cracking. In order to overcome the hot cracking and cold cracking, Semisolid Stir Joining method and a proper thermal cycle was used respectively. Effects of temperature, stirring rate, and tool type were investigated in Semisolid Stir joining method. In this method, butt joint design was used in order to place specimens, and the specimens were heated up to specific temperatures (920, 925, 930°C). A stirrer (Cylindrical and Grooved tool) with three rotational speeds (800, 1200, 1600 RPM) was introduced into the stir weld seam. Welded specimens were cooled to the 900°C...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asghari, Fatemeh (Author) ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Joshaghani, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The low female labor force participation rate in the Iranian labor market relative to the global average and even to countries that do not differ significantly from the socio-economic characteristics of our country is one of the important questions of the Iranian labor market. In this study, we seek to answer the question of whether the economic participation rate of married women will increase if the gender gaps in wages, job findings and job losses among women and men are eliminated in the Iranian labor market. To answer this question using household expenditure and income data and labor force data, we show that between the two categories of occupations, in terms of the share of women's...

Graph homomorphisms through random walks [electronic resource]

, Article Journal of Graph Theory ; 2003, Volume 44, Issue 1, pages 15–38 Daneshgar, A. (Amir) ; Hajiabolhassan, Hossein ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper we introduce some general necessary conditions for the existence of graph homomorphisms, which hold in both directed and undirected cases. Our method is a combination of Diaconis and Saloff–Coste comparison technique for Markov chains and a generalization of Haemers interlacing theorem. As some applications, we obtain a necessary condition for the spanning subgraph problem, which also provides a generalization of a theorem of Mohar (1992) as a necessary condition for Hamiltonicity. In particular, in the case that the range is a Cayley graph or an edge-transitive graph, we obtain theorems with a corollary about the existence of homomorphisms to cycles. This, specially, provides...

Unique list-colourability and the fixing chromatic number of graphs [electronic resource]

, Article Discrete Applied Mathematics ; Volume 152, Issues 1–3, 1 November 2005, Pages 123–138 Daneshgar, A. (Amir) ; Hajiabolhassan, Hossein ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper we introduce a chromatic parameter, called the fixing chromatic number, which is related to unique colourability of graphs, in the sense that it measures how one can embed the given graph G in G∪Kt by adding edges between G and Kt to make the whole graph uniquely t-colourable. We study some basic properties of this parameter as well as its relationships to some other well-known chromatic numbers as the acyclic chromatic number. We compute the fixing chromatic number of some graph products by applying a modified version of the exponential graph construction

Circular colouring and algebraic no-homomorphism theorems

, Article European Journal of Combinatorics ; Volume 28, Issue 6, August 2007, Pages 1843–1853 Daneshgar, A. (Amir) ; Hajiabolhassan, Hossein ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we apply some new algebraic no-homomorphism theorems in conjunction with some new chromatic parameters to estimate the circular chromatic number of graphs. To show the applicability of the general results, as a couple of examples, we generalize a well known inequality for the fractional chromatic number of graphs and we also show that the circular chromatic number of the graph obtained from the Petersen graph by excluding one vertex is equal to 3. Also, we focus on the Johnson–Holroyd–Stahl conjecture about the circular chromatic number of Kneser graphs and we propose an approach to this conjecture. In this regard, we introduce a new related conjecture on Kneser graphs and we...
