In this paper, we report on 2D numerical simulation of spectral response for InGaN dual-band photodetector operating at near ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. The back-to-back p–i–n/n–i–p integrated structure enables independent and simultaneous detection of two bands under back-side illumination. The effect of indium content and absorption layer thickness of the two sub-detectors on external quantum efficiency and optical crosstalk between two sub-detectors have been investigated. The optimum values for indium content and thickness of absorption layer in sub-detectors are determined

Is Neurological Research Support New Social Media Injuries ?

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rasouli, Somayeh (Author) ; Hosseini, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
For more than two decades psychologists and sociologists have been warning about the damage of new social media. in the last decade, the neurological research has been developed to provide an empirical foundation to support the above hypothesis. Much of the research has focused on teenagers and young adults as the so-called digital native and as the largest number of social media users. They hold that a significant contribution to the adolescent trend plays a significant role in the tendency of individuals toward social media, thus increasing impulsive behavior. The three parts of the brain, namely the "social cognition network," the "self-referential cognition network" and the "reward...

    Abstract
Set of experiments has been developed to study existing runaway electrons in "Damavand" tokamak plasma upon characteristics of hard x-ray emissions produced by collision of the runaway electrons with the plasma particles and limiters. As a first step, spatial distribution of hard x-ray emissions on the equatorial plane of the torus was considered. Obtained spectra of hard x-ray emissions for different alignments of shielded detector indicate isotropic emissivity in the equatorial plane. This is in agreement with wide angle cone of bremsstrahlung radiations, deduced from the mean value of energy of the runaway electrons. The mean energy was calculated from the slope of the energy spectrum of...

Improving Utility of Cellular Spectrum to Secondary Users

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rasouli, Mohammad (Author) ; Golestani, Jamaloddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis investigates methods to improve the utility of cellular spectrum to secondary users. Here, secondary users exploit the spectrum by hierarchical spectrum access. Since the information of the channels is available at the central controller, cellular networks can play an active role in spectrum use of the secondary users and increase their utility in this way. Transmitting the information available at the central controller to the secondary users and ordering the channels in use by primaries can help improve spectrum sensing. First, we consider the schemes which maximize secondary users’ utility by ordering the channel allocation process to primary users. We model the secondary...

An Application of Algebraic Topology to Computer Sciences

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rasouli Pichahi, Majid (Author) ; Fanai, HamidReza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we study one of the applications of algebraic topology to computer science and define some tools to analyze concurrent programs. For this purpose a geometric space is corresponded to every concurrent program and a partial order is considered on this space, so every path on it corresponds to an execution of the program. Some of these paths which are dihomotop (homotop in partial ordered spaces) with each other induce the same execution of the program. By defining “Fundamental Category” in which objects are points of the space and morphisms are dihomotopy classes, the space that should be analyzed shrinks to a smaller one. By defining component category in the next step, without...

    Abstract
The labels mathematician, engineer, and physicist have all been used in reference to Balthazar van der Pol. The van der Pol oscillator, which we study in this paper, is a model developed by him to describe the behavior of nonlinear vacuum tube circuits in the relatively early days of the development of electronics technology. Our study in this paper will be based entirely on numerical solutions. The rigorous foundations for the analysis (e.g., the proof that the equation has a limit cycle solution which is a global attractor) date back to the work of Lienard in 1928, with later more general analysis by Levinson and others

    , Article International Journal of Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 28, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 438-447 ; 10783466 (ISSN) Kazemi, S ; Parniani, M ; Rasouli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
This paper presents actual cases of steady reactive power oscillation of distributed generations (DGs) during parallel operation with the main grid. The cause of the problem was found to be the adverse effects of excitation system voltage regulation. It is shown, through preliminary investigation and detailed simulation studies, that how the excitation control system can be modified to overcome this problem. On-site test results verify the analysis results and effectiveness of the remedial actions. Finally, general practical recommendations are offered for excitation control of synchronous generator-based DG, such that it performs properly, both in grid connected and in islanding conditions

Experimental Evaluation of Membrane-less Microbial Fuel Cell

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rasouli, Fatemeh (Author) ; Kariminia, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has attracted a great attention in the recent years due to its advantage of simultaneous energy generation and pollution removal. However, utilization of MFC technologies a challenging issue because of the low energy output and high expenses. Generally, using ion exchange membrane in MFC contributes to a large proportion of the construction costs. Without using a membrane, oxygen intrudes to the anode chamber which will inhibit the anode reaction and decreases the coulombic efficiency. As a solution, using less expensive membranes can facilitate the commercialization of MFC technology.
In this study, soil cylinder and earthen plate were examined as low cost...

    , Article Physics Letters, Section A: General, Atomic and Solid State Physics ; Volume 380, Issue 48 , 2016 , Pages 4039-4043 ; 03759601 (ISSN) Nejat Pishkenari, H ; Mohagheghian, E ; Rasouli, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier, B. V  2016
    Abstract
Due to the growing applications of silicon in nano-scale systems, a molecular dynamics approach is employed to investigate thermal properties of silicon. Since simulation results rely upon interatomic potentials, thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) and lattice constant of bulk silicon have been obtained using different potentials (SW, Tersoff, MEAM, and EDIP) and results indicate that SW has a better agreement with the experimental observations. To investigate effect of size on TEC of silicon nanowires, further simulations are performed using SW potential. To this end, silicon nanowires of different sizes are examined and their TEC is calculated by averaging in different directions ([100],...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effect of various arrangements of displacement, velocity and acceleration related weighting matrices on the performance of active control systems on nonlinear frames has been studied. Different arrangements of weighting matrices and feedback combinations of the response have been considered to design the active controllers using a single actuator for reducing the response of an eight-storey bilinear hysteretic frame under white noise excitations. The nonlinear Newmark-based instantaneous optimal control algorithm has been used, where the distributed genetic algorithm (DGA) is employed to determine the proper set of weighting matrices. For each set of feedback and weighting...

R ; Ghanbari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In recent years, the demand for video transmission over wireless communication networks is growing very fast. The H.264 video compression standard which offers high quality at low bit rates, is a suitable codec for applications that require efficient video transmission over wireless networks. While the compressed videos are transmitted through error-prone networks, error robustness becomes an important issue. In this paper, a joint source-channel Lagrange optimization method in which the distortion of the decoder is estimated without using feedback which can be used for both multicast and point-to-point applications is proposed. The experimental results show that the new algorithm has a good...

A theoretical analysis of the effects of erbium ion pair on the dynamics of an optical gain stabilized fiber amplifier

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 265, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 283-300 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Bahrampour, A. R ; Mahjoei, M ; Rasouli, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of ion-pair formation on the gain dynamics of multi cavity optical automatic gain control erbium doped fiber amplifier is modelled. The inhomogeneous Cabezas simple model is used to write the rate and propagation equations for the active medium. The solution of the governing equations shows that in high concentration of the erbium ions, depending on the pumping rate, the relaxation oscillations are converted to nT-Periodic or even to chaotic behavior. Although the high concentration erbium ion in the optical amplifiers decreases the conversion efficiency and increases the threshold pump power, amplitude of the transient effects is reduced in the multi feedback-loop...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rasouli, Hassanali (Author) ; Afshar, Abdollah (Supervisor) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Addition of heavy metal cations such as manganese and nickel in low zinc phosphating bath increases the corrosion resistance of coatings and provides more suitable substrates for painting (especially electrophoretic painting). In addition, due to accelerating property and low cost availability of heavy metal cations such as Mn, multi– cationic phosphating is cost effective. In the present study, chemical composition and operating parameters of zinc - calcium - manganese Tri- cationic phosphating solution were optimized. Then the effects of various parameters such as phosphating time, bath temperature and pH on properties of coating were investigated. According to the results, about 1 g/L was...
