, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Moshfegh, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Zirak, Mohammad (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Synthesis, characterization and photoelectrocatalytic performance evaluation of worm-like BiVO4 porous films have been conducted in this research. An in situ combustion approach was employed to prepare BiVO4 nanolayers on glass and ITO/glass by using drop casting, spin coating, dip coating and pulsed spray pyrolysis deposition techniques. The precursor solution of vanadium and bismuth include ~0.0233g ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3) and ~0.0970g bismuth (III) nitrate pentahydrate (Bi(NO3)3.5H2O) in 2.5 mL ethylene glycol. Different deposition parameters were investigated for each of the aforementioned deposition techniques to obtain a uniformly-deposited BiVO4 nanolayer with high adhesion to...
Write invalidation analysis in chip multiprocessors
, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 9 September 2009 through 11 September 2009, Delft ; Volume 5953 LNCS , 2010 , Pages 196-205 ; 03029743 (ISSN) ; 3642118011 (ISBN) ; Baniasadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Chip multiprocessors (CMPs) issue write invalidations (WIs) to assure program correctness. In conventional snoop-based protocols, writers broadcast invalidations to all nodes as soon as possible. In this work we show that this approach, while protecting correctness, is inefficient due to two reasons. First, many of the invalidated blocks are not accessed after invalidation making the invalidation unnecessary. Second, among the invalidated blocks many are not accessed anytime soon, making immediate invalidation unnecessary. While invalidating the first group could be avoided altogether, the second group's invalidation could be delayed without any performance or correctness cost. Accordingly,...
A Spatial Locality-based Block Replacement Algoritghm in Cache Memories
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sarbazi-Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
From the programmer’s point of view, main memory allocation to a program is contigious, however this is non-contigious and the program is scattered in physical memory here and there. Assuming main memory partitioned into regions, each program accesses in its life time different regions which are not necessariliy close and occupy different percentages of the cache capacity. Considering what the replacement policy is chosen, the cache would be partitioned differently among regions, e.g., the commonly used LRU policy partitions the cache among regions on a demand basis, giving the more cache resource to regions whose miss ratio is higher, which is not necessarily optimal. In this thesis, we...
Three-user interference channel with common information: A rate splitting-based achievability scheme
, Article IET Communications ; Vol. 8, Issue. 4 , 2014 , Pages 462-470 ; ISSN: 17518628 ; Mirmohseni, M ; Aref, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
In this study, the three-user interference channel (IFC) with common information is considered, where each receiver decode not only the private message from the intended transmitter but also the common messages from the non-intended transmitters by applying a simultaneous decoding scheme. An achievable rate region is presented using rate splitting and superposition encoding at the transmitters and simultaneous joint decoding at the receivers in which the transmitters cooperatively send the split messages which allows the interference cancellation at the receivers. The implicit form of the achievable rate region is also extended to K-user IFC with common information. Finally the inner bound...

Abstract
In this paper, we report on 2D numerical simulation of spectral response for InGaN dual-band photodetector operating at near ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. The back-to-back p–i–n/n–i–p integrated structure enables independent and simultaneous detection of two bands under back-side illumination. The effect of indium content and absorption layer thickness of the two sub-detectors on external quantum efficiency and optical crosstalk between two sub-detectors have been investigated. The optimum values for indium content and thickness of absorption layer in sub-detectors are determined

Is Neurological Research Support New Social Media Injuries ?
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini, Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
For more than two decades psychologists and sociologists have been warning about the damage of new social media. in the last decade, the neurological research has been developed to provide an empirical foundation to support the above hypothesis. Much of the research has focused on teenagers and young adults as the so-called digital native and as the largest number of social media users. They hold that a significant contribution to the adolescent trend plays a significant role in the tendency of individuals toward social media, thus increasing impulsive behavior. The three parts of the brain, namely the "social cognition network," the "self-referential cognition network" and the "reward...

Abstract
Set of experiments has been developed to study existing runaway electrons in "Damavand" tokamak plasma upon characteristics of hard x-ray emissions produced by collision of the runaway electrons with the plasma particles and limiters. As a first step, spatial distribution of hard x-ray emissions on the equatorial plane of the torus was considered. Obtained spectra of hard x-ray emissions for different alignments of shielded detector indicate isotropic emissivity in the equatorial plane. This is in agreement with wide angle cone of bremsstrahlung radiations, deduced from the mean value of energy of the runaway electrons. The mean energy was calculated from the slope of the energy spectrum of...
Improving Utility of Cellular Spectrum to Secondary Users
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Golestani, Jamaloddin (Supervisor)
Abstract
This thesis investigates methods to improve the utility of cellular spectrum to secondary users. Here, secondary users exploit the spectrum by hierarchical spectrum access. Since the information of the channels is available at the central controller, cellular networks can play an active role in spectrum use of the secondary users and increase their utility in this way. Transmitting the information available at the central controller to the secondary users and ordering the channels in use by primaries can help improve spectrum sensing. First, we consider the schemes which maximize secondary users’ utility by ordering the channel allocation process to primary users. We model the secondary...
Approximation behavior of Van der Pol equation: Large and small nonlinearity parameter
, Article IMECS 2011 - International MultiConference of Engineers and Computer Scientists 2011, 16 March 2011 through 18 March 2011 ; Volume 2 , March , 2011 , Pages 1539-1544 ; 9789881925121 (ISBN) ; Moghadas, P ; Rasouli, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The labels mathematician, engineer, and physicist have all been used in reference to Balthazar van der Pol. The van der Pol oscillator, which we study in this paper, is a model developed by him to describe the behavior of nonlinear vacuum tube circuits in the relatively early days of the development of electronics technology. Our study in this paper will be based entirely on numerical solutions. The rigorous foundations for the analysis (e.g., the proof that the equation has a limit cycle solution which is a global attractor) date back to the work of Lienard in 1928, with later more general analysis by Levinson and others

The effects of excitation control systems on parallel operation of DG with the main grid
, Article International Journal of Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 28, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 438-447 ; 10783466 (ISSN) ; Parniani, M ; Rasouli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2008
Abstract
This paper presents actual cases of steady reactive power oscillation of distributed generations (DGs) during parallel operation with the main grid. The cause of the problem was found to be the adverse effects of excitation system voltage regulation. It is shown, through preliminary investigation and detailed simulation studies, that how the excitation control system can be modified to overcome this problem. On-site test results verify the analysis results and effectiveness of the remedial actions. Finally, general practical recommendations are offered for excitation control of synchronous generator-based DG, such that it performs properly, both in grid connected and in islanding conditions

An Application of Algebraic Topology to Computer Sciences
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fanai, HamidReza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis we study one of the applications of algebraic topology to computer science and define some tools to analyze concurrent programs. For this purpose a geometric space is corresponded to every concurrent program and a partial order is considered on this space, so every path on it corresponds to an execution of the program. Some of these paths which are dihomotop (homotop in partial ordered spaces) with each other induce the same execution of the program. By defining “Fundamental Category” in which objects are points of the space and morphisms are dihomotopy classes, the space that should be analyzed shrinks to a smaller one. By defining component category in the next step, without...

Abstract
Entrance of air to close water conduits occurs in many ways. This phenomenon makes displeasing effects on water transport structures. Two-phase flows in closed conduits are studied experimentally, numerically and theoretically. Even after decades, due to the complexity of the subject, these studies still require development and reformation. Numerical and theoretical two-phase models are often limited to a special regime of flow."Volume Of Fluid"(VOF) is a model for non-mixing two-phase flows. "Fluent" software uses this model in this field of flows. Volume of fluid is used successfully in some problems like dam break or rising bubbles. Main disadvantage of this model is distribution of the...
