Effect of gamma ray on poly(lactic acid)/poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) blends as biodegradable food packaging films
, Article Radiation Physics and Chemistry ; Vol. 96 , 2014 , pp. 12-18 ; ISSN: 0969806X ; Dadbin, S ; Frounchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(vinyl acetate-. co-vinyl alcohol) [P(VAc-. co-VA)] blends as new transparent film packaging materials were prepared at various blend compositions and different vinyl alcohol contents. The blends and pure PLA were irradiated by gamma rays to investigate the extent of changes in the packaging material during gamma ray sterilization process. The miscibility of the blends was dependent on the blend composition and vinyl alcohol content; gamma irradiation had little effect on the extent of miscibility. The glass transition temperature of pure PLA and PLA/P(VAc-. co-VA) miscible blends reduced after irradiation. On the other hand in PLA/P(VAc-. co-VA) immiscible...

Abstract
The oxygen-barrier properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) [P(VAc-co-VA)] were investigated. P(VAc-co-VA)s with vinyl alcohol (VA) contents of 5, 10, and 15 mol % were prepared with the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate). The obtained copolymers with various contents of VA were blended with PLA at 5/95, 10/90, and 15/85 compositions. Films of the blends were prepared by a solution-casting method with chloroform as the cosolvent. Although the blend with 5% VA in the copolymer appeared to be miscible, the blends with 10 and 15% VA content in the copolymer were immiscible, as verified by dynamic mechanical analysis. The oxygen-barrier properties...

Abstract
Polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites with 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt-% nanoclay contents were prepared. X-ray diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscopy images, tensile test, and thermogravimetric analysis were utilised to reveal the morphological, mechanical, and thermal-resistant properties of the prepared nanocomposites. The exfoliated structure was obtained for nanoclay contents up to 3 wt-%. Incorporation of nanoclay to the PU matrix prompted the thermal stability of the polymer. A nanocomposite filled with 3 wt-% nanoclay showed the best tensile strength in the prepared nanocomposites. Subsequently, the nanocomposite with the 3 wt-% nanoclay was reinforced with carbon and glass...

Abstract
Modified versions of the Zener drag equation were obtained by evaluating a non-random distribution of incoherent ceramic particles in a nano-crystalline material. Analytical investigation of particle-boundary correlation indicates that the limiting grain size would be proportional to fV -1/3 for fV larger than 2.96%. The limiting grain size can be obtained by a combination of random and non-random Zener drag pressure in the case of volume fractions smaller than 2.96%

Abstract
In this paper, the shear deformation behavior of A286 Iron-based superalloy was studied with an emphasis on the influence of η phase on shear strength. The η (Ni3Ti phase precipitates at high temperature heat treatment or during services at the expense of gamma prime phase. According to the microstructural features, no evidences of η phase were found at 650 and 720°C. η phase precipitated at 780 and 840°C and the amount of it increased with an increase the time and temperature. Because of using the alloy as fasteners, investigation of shear properties and the influence of η phase on it are indispensable. The shear strength of the alloy with different volume fractions of η was examined. It...

Abstract
Laser assisted machining (LAM) is a promising technology for machining hard to cut materials. In most experimental cases, LAM is undergone in two stages; first, the temperature at the material removal point (Tmr) is tuned by adjusting laser parameters and next, the cutting tool is engaged. Introduction of highly localized heat energy to the workpiece makes the modeling of this process very complicated. Hence, an analytical model for the first stage of the process - rather than multiple experiments or FE modelling - would be beneficial. This article presents an analytical solution to the transient, temperature field in a rotating cylinder subject to a localized laser heat source. The...

Abstract
Modeling of the laser-assisted machining (LAM) process requires an accurate estimate of the surface absorption coefficient. In addition to the laser type and material properties, this parameter is dependent on the state of the process in terms of surface quality, texture, oxidation state, and temperature change during the machining process. In this article, two methods are presented for calculating this coefficient based on the surface temperature obtained from measurement by a pyrometer and an analytical model of the process. In the first method, the pyrometer is fixed on a lathe bed while in the second method, a co-moving pyrometer is used. Temperature measurements in both methods are...

Abstract
A stable capillary liquid jet formed by an electric field is an important physical phenomenon for formation of controllable small droplets, power generation and chemical reactions, printing and patterning, and chemical-biological investigations. In electrohydrodynamics, the well-known Taylor cone-jet has a stability margin within a certain range of the liquid flow rate (Q) and the applied voltage (V). Here, we introduce a simple mechanism to greatly extend the Taylor cone-jet stability margin and produce a very high throughput. For an ethanol cone-jet emitting from a simple nozzle, the stability margin is obtained within 1 kV for low flow rates, decaying with flow rate up to 2 ml/h. By...

Abstract
In this paper, a new genetic algorithm (GA) method is presented to solve the optimization problem in coordination of overcurrent and earth fault relays. In addition to optimal coordination of overcurrent relays, earth fault relays are also coordinated by GA, considering critical fault condition for the relays located in two sides of network's transformers. The objective function is developed by adding new terms that are the constraints related to the coordination of overcurrent and earth fault relays in critical fault conditions considering different winding arrangements of transformers. The paper concluded by the results of a study carried out on a sample power network. The results...

Abstract
This paper presents experimental results on the synthesis of nanostructured aluminium matrix nanocomposite powders by comilling of nanoscaled SiC and Al2O3 particles and micrometric aluminium powder. The effect of the nanometric reinforcement particles on the mechanical milling (MA) process of the soft matrix was studied by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, laser particle size analyser and standard metallographic techniques. It was found that at the early stage of milling, the nanoparticles are smeared on the surface of the aluminium powder and thus do not significantly contribute in the MA process. As the milling continues, the hard...

Abstract
The effect of high-energy ball milling on the textural evolution of alumina nanopowders (compaction response, sinter-ability, grain growth and the degree of agglomeration) during post sintering process is studied. The applied pressure required for the breakage of the agglomerates (P y) during milling was estimated and the key elements of compressibility (i.e. critical pressure (P cr) and compressibility (b)) were calculated. Based on the results, the fracture point of the agglomerates decreased from 150 to 75 MPa with prolonged milling time from 3 to 60 min. Furthermore, the powders were formed by different shaping methods such as cold isostatic press (CIP) and uniaxial press (UP) to better...

Abstract
Wireless body area networks (WBANs) are characterized by short-range wireless communication between inherently resource-limited sensors that operate in the vicinity of the human body for recording certain physiological signals. One of the main limitations of WBANs is in terms of their available power. Since the nodes are typically battery-driven, an efficient power transmission is essential to guarantee long-lasting communications among nodes without the need for frequent battery replacement or charging. In this study, aiming to improve the WBAN performance, we first investigate the power allocation problem by choosing the ergodic capacity and the outage probability as the desired metrics....

Abstract
Wireless body area network (WBAN) is composed of miniaturised sensors that operate in the vicinity of the human body for recording the vital physiological signals and wirelessly transmitting them to a central hub for further processing. In this study, a statistical approach is applied to an experimental channel data set to extract the models for the squared channel gain that best describe the characteristics of the transmission medium between the sensors and the central hub. The derived models are then utilised to investigate the error rate performance of WBAN sensors. On the basis thereof, an optimisation problem is formed for which the cost function is the symbol error rate (SER) metric....

Abstract
Following our previous work on morphology, corrosion resistance and thermal properties of unsaturated polyester (UP)/nanoclay composites, the effect of electron beam (EB) irradiation on mechanical properties of UP/nanoclay composites with various nanoclay contents is investigated in this work. Moreover, influence of EB irradiation with doses of 100, 500 and 1000 kGy on tensile properties and hardness of nanocomposite was examined. FTIR spectroscopy was employed to examine the effect of irradiation on chemical structure of polymer. EB irradiation up to 500 kGy led to the improvement of tensile strength and hardness of the samples. The best mechanical properties were observed for the...

Abstract
Hot deformation behaviour of as-extruded Al-5vol% Al 2O 3 nanocomposite was investigated at temperatures range 350 to 450°C and initial strain rates of 5.5 × 10 -4 to 10 -1 s -1 and compared with those of monolithic (unreinforced) aluminium. Both extruded materials exhibited work-softening during hot deformation. The results showed that with the addition of 5 vol% alumina nanoparticles with an average particle size of 35 nm, a significant increase in compressive strength of aluminium was obtained. For instance, at 350°C an abrupt rise of ∼340% in hot strength of the nanocomposite relative to monolithic aluminium was achieved. TEM investigation of microstructure of the nanocomposite after hot...

Abstract
This study investigates an ethanol liquid jet subjected to combination of an air crossflow and a normal electric field. The results on the liquid jet trajectory and subsequent droplets flight paths are presented. The liquid jet trajectory was found as a function of two non-dimensional quantities; the liquid jet to the crossflow momentum ratio and the electroinertial number. The electroinertial number is defined as the ratio between the liquid jet specific momentum and the electric force. A correlation is introduced for the jet trajectory in low crossflow speeds and electric field intensities. The same two quantities control the detached droplets flight paths. Satellite droplets flight angles...
