Flight envelope expansion in landing phase using classic, intelligent and adaptive controllers [electronic resource]
, Article Journal of aircraft ; 2006, Vol. 43, No. 1 ; Izadi, Hojjat Allah ; Pakme, Mehrdad
Abstract
An expanding flight envelope in the landing phase of a typical jet transport aircraft in presence of strong wind shears using a learning capable control system (LCCS) is investigated. The idea stems fromhuman beings functional architecture that gives them the ability to do more as they age and gain more experience. With the knowledge that classical controllers lack sufficient generality to cope with nonlinear as well as uncertain phenomenon such as turbulent air, the focuse is on different types of intelligent controllers due to their learning and nonlinear generalization capabilities as candidates for the landing flight phase. It is shown that the latter class of controllers could be used...
Mind-Body Problem from Wittgenstein’s Perspective
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hojjat, Mino (Supervisor)
Abstract
To provide a stable foundation for human knowledge Descartes presumed that human being is composed of two distinct substances, the mind and the body. But, the solution through which he wanted to explain the correlation between these substances, was not accepted by other philosophers, and thereafter this problem was known as mind-body problem. This problem arises some other philosophical problems including solipsism and the problem of other minds. In this thesis, considering the grammar of such words like memory, understanding, and thinking I will show that having an exact description of these concepts we would be able to escape from these inclination to seek something behind these words, and...
Designing a System for Pulse Pile-Up Processing in Gamma Ray Spectroscopy Based on Digital Method
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hosseini, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
Abstract
In Radiation Detection Systems applied in Spectroscopy and Imaging, if the rate of particle incidence with detector is high, the output pulses being stacked up on each other will be expected, which is known as “Pulse Pile-up”. Pulse pile-up might result in a serious disorder of energy and timing data expected from the pulses. In recent decades and after successful implementation of pile-up rejection methods on analog circuits, considering development and progression in the field of digital, different algorithms based on pileup correction methods have been developed to obtain all spectrum information, whether energy, rise time and recorded pulses. Such methods can be compared in different...

Abstract
In the IEEE 802.1D standard for the Media Access Control layer (MAC layer) bridges, there is an STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) definition, based on the algorithm that was proposed by Radia Perlman. In this paper, we give a formal proof for correctness of the STP algorithm by showing that finally a single node is selected as the root of the tree and the loops are eliminated correctly. We use formal inductive reasoning to establish these requirements. In order to ensure that the bridges behave correctly regardless of the topology of the surrounding bridges and LANs, the Rebeca, modular verification techniques are applied. These techniques are shown to be efficiently applicable in model checking...

Abstract
Low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) with low-noise performance are critical components in communication systems. However, reaching a high level of performance is difficult. This study introduces a LNA for radio frequency front-end receivers with a frequency range of 6–12 GHz. The planned LNA contains a two-stage high-electron-mobility transistor cascade amplifier with a minimum measured noise figure of 0.8 dB and a peak gain of 25 dB at room temperature. The proposed LNA is based on a gallium arsenide field-effect transistor transistor (CE3512K2) because of its good low-noise performance at microwave frequency bands. The measured results demonstrate that the proposed LNA is perfectly matched over...

Abstract
An optimal preview control of a vehicle suspension system traveling on a rough road is studied. A three-dimensional seven degree-of-freedom car-riding model and several descriptions of the road surface roughness heights, including haversine (hole/bump) and stochastic filtered white noise models, are used in the analysis. It is assumed that contact-less sensors affixed to the vehicle front bumper measure the road surface height at some distances in the front of the car. The suspension systems are optimized with respect to ride comfort and road holding preferences including accelerations of the sprung mass, tire deflection, suspension rattle space and control force. The performance and power...

Abstract
Stochastic optimal control of a vehicle suspension on a random road is studied. The road roughness height is modelled as a filtered white noise stochastic process and a four-degree-of-freedom half-car model is used in the analysis. It is assumed that a sensor is mounted in the front bumper that measures the road irregularity at some distances in the front of the vehicle. Two other sensors also measure relative velocities of the vehicle body with respect to the unsprung masses in the vehicle suspension spaces. All measurements are assumed to be conducted in a noisy environment. The state variables of the vehicle system are estimated using a method similar to the Kalman filter. The suspension...

Abstract
combination of smart antenna techniques and OFDM could be considered as a promising solution for improving the performance and enhancing the data rates of next generation wireless communication systems operating in frequency selective fading environments. There are different design parameters which could affect the application of adaptive arrays in OFDM-based systems. Various beam-forming methods in frequency or time domain, different array architectures and various number of array elements are important factors which are able to change the performance and complexity of the system. These parameters may show different effects in different channel conditions. In this paper we implemented a new...

Abstract
Porous carbon template decorated with mixed transition metals/metal oxides with tunable architecture is becoming increasingly important and attractive as a kind of novel electrode materials. In this way, mixed-metallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide an opportunity for fabrication of homogeneous mixed metals/metal oxides distribution in the porous carbon frame without any carbon precursor additive. Also, structures, dimensions and electrochemical performance of MOFs can be readily manipulated by simply tuning the metals molar ratio. In this study, we demonstrate the design and fabrication of petal-like NiCo/NiO-CoO metal/metal oxides with a rational composition embedded in 3D...

Abstract
Dirac leaky-wave antennas (DLWAs) are derived from photonic crystals exhibiting Dirac cone dispersion around their Γ-point. DLWAs provide high directive beams and continuous frequency beam scanning, non-fluctuating leakage constant and real non-zero Bloch impedance at and around broadside, due to the closed and linear Dirac dispersion relation around broadside. These features, along with their inherent compatibility for higher frequency designs (larger unit cells compared to metamaterials), make DLWAs an ideal candidate for the upper microwave, mm-wave and terahertz frequencies, and for applications such as radar, 5G, spectroscopy, etc. In this review, we cover the recent developments on...

Abstract
Over the last few years, substantial efforts have been made to develop earth-abundant bi-functional catalysts for urea oxidation and energy-saving electrolytic hydrogen production due to their low cost and the potential to replace traditional noble-metal-based catalysts. Nevertheless, finding a straightforward and effective route to prepare efficient catalysts with unique structural features and optimal supports still is a big challenge. Among the various candidates, metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived materials show great advantages as new kinds of active non-precious catalysts. On the other hand, the controllable integration of MOFs and carbon-based nanomaterials leads to further...

Abstract
In the majority of leaky-wave antennas (LWAs), the lack of broadside radiation is due to the existence of an open-stopband (OSB) at broadside. In this letter, we present a study on the OSB suppression in LWAs. In particular, we start from a simple unit cell comprising a planar waveguide having alternating open and short sidewalls. The analytical and simulated band structures testify consistently that OSB suppression can indeed be realized by proper design, analytically studied using mode-matching, and further supported by full-wave simulations. An LWA is then implemented using the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology, which provides interesting features such as a high directive...

Abstract
Exploring bi-functional electrocatalysts with excellent activity, good durability, and cost-effectiveness for electrochemical hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) in the same electrolyte is a critical step towards a sustainable hydrogen economy. Three main features such as high density of active sites, improved charge transfer, and optimized electronic configuration have positive effects on the electrocatalyst activity. In this context, understanding structure–composition–property relationships and catalyst activity is very important and highly desirable. Herein, for the first time, we present the design and fabrication of novel MOF-derived ultra-small Ru/RuO2 nanoparticles...

Abstract
In this paper, a wideband coupled-resonator microstrip bandpass filter is designed and experimentally demonstrated in the S-Band. The filter is comprised of quarter-wavelength hair-pin resonators, reducing resonator and filter footprint compared to conventional hairpin designs. Additionally, it is considerably forgiving to fabrication tolerances and yields remarkably close matched results between theory, simulation, and measured results. One demonstration presented has minimal insertion loss ${(< 1{dB})}$ for the entire wide bandwidth of 3.4 GHz to 4.2 GHz. Wider bandwidths up to 60% are also observed using the design. The proposed filter is an attractive solution when space is a critical...
Driver’s Behavior at Intersection with Yield Control in Minor Road
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vaziri, Manouchehr (Supervisor)
Abstract
Compared to systematically signalized intersections, in the absence of any systematic instruction or signalization at unsignalized-prioritized intersections and due to lower levels of control, driver performance strongly steps in as a decisive factor of intersection traffic and geometric design. Therefore, the study of driver behavior at these intersections appears necessary. This thesis aims to study driver behavior at four prioritized intersections where the minor stream has to yield right of way to the main stream in the city of Mashhad, Iran. Following extraction of raw statistical data from extensive filming, the initial database was constructed consisting of 29 variables. Based on the...
On The Weil Conjectures
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jafari, Amir (Supervisor)
Abstract
” The story of the "Weil conjectures" is a marvelous example of mathematical imagination, and one of the most striking instances exhibiting the fundamental unity of mathematics.”In 1949,Andre Weil stated some conjectures on the zeta function of Algebraic varieties over finite fields .These conjectures were analogue of the properties of Riemann zeta function ,in particular Riemann hypothesis. In fact ,Weil built a bridge between Diophantine structure on varieties over finite fields (Counting of rational points on varieties) and cohomological structure of them over the field of complex numbers(topology of variety). In this thesis, first we state Weil’s motivations for these conjectures and state...

Abstract
Congestion is the inseparable part of everyday life in large transportation networks. Expansion of road networks especially in downtown area is next to impossible and it is resulting multiplicative congestion problems. Congestion imposes private and public costs. Therefore, restricting policies on road use through cordon-based or area-based pricing is proposed to reduce the negative impacts of traffic, travel demand management and optimal use of transportation systems. This would produce better resource allocation through transportation network optimization. Implementation of congestion pricing policies induces short-term and long-term effects. In this thesis, it is attempted to determine...
The Modeling of Hydrogen Purification and Carbon Dioxide Capture by two Dimensional Porous Membranes Using Molecular Dynamicssimulations
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tafazzoli, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
Carbon dioxide is one of the most significant greenhouse gases in biocycle. This gas makes the equilibrium temperature by absorbing IR radiations on the earth. It is the reason that prevent the earth from freezing. Increasing CO2 emissions in atmosphere, makes problems such as global warming. According to the Kyoto Protocol, all the countries attended to this protocol, must decrease greenhouse gases emissions. Although H2 fuel is one of the best alternative fuel against fossil fuels, the most important industrial process (steam-methane reforming) produce CO2 as by-product. Thus, gas separation has a prominent role in industrial processes such as CO2 capture and H2 purification.Today, gas...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Shahrokhian, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, nanocomposite containing reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (RGO) and trimetallic three-dimensional (3D) Pt-Pd-Co porous nanostructures was fabricated by galvanic replacement technique. First, GO suspension was drop-casted on the electrode surface, then GO film reduction was carried out by cycling the potential in negative direction to form the RGO on GCE (RGO/GCE). Then, electrodeposition of the cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) as sacrificial seeds was performed onto the RGO/GCE by using cyclic voltammetry. Afterward, Pt-Pd-Co 3D porous nanostructures fabrication occurs through galvanic replacement method based on a spontaneous redox process between CoNPs and solution...
Interferometric Laser Imaging for Droplet Sizing (ILIDS)in Sparse Sprays
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kebriaee, Azadeh (Supervisor)
Abstract
In the present work we first introduced ILIDS and review the theory of interferometry and light scattering from droplets. Bases on ILIDS method, droplets are irradiated by monochrome sheet laser, where the superposition of reflected and first-order refracted beams form a parallel fringe pattern at out of focus plane on the imaging sensor in the forward-scatter region. This pattern can be related to the droplet size by using simple geometrical optics. For the present work, an image processing algorithm is utilized to capture weak and noisy images of droplets to reduce the lost data in the sizing procedure. Since ILIDS method is applied for small and dilute spray, it is suitable for...
