Abstract
Cable-driven parallel robots have several outstanding characteristics that make them unique in many robotic applications. Since cables can only pull, one of the most important issues associated with these robots is obtaining their workspace. In this paper a spatial translational cable-driven robot with active/passive cables is considered and its workspace is investigated from several points of views. First the moment resisting capability of the robot is discussed and the effects of some robot's parameters on the workspace are studied. Then, both force-feasibility and moment-resisting capability of the robot are considered to find the region where the end-effector may exert the required...
Planning of Energy Storage Systems with the Main Goal of Managing the Output Power of Wind Farms
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Uncertain fuel prices and also global climate changes are accompanied by some state initiatives such as renewable portfolio standards (RPS). This has caused a fast growth in the amount of renewable energy installed worldwide especially wind energy over last decades. However, the intrinsic characteristics of wind farms output power, i.e. intermittency and volatility of wind speed along with being non-dispatchable in output generation of wind turbine raises many new technical and financial challenges for power system operators and planners. Up to these issues, large level of wind power penetration causes a growing concern in wind energy curtailment issue which the wind farm’s operator may be...
Kinematic and Dynamic Analysis and Workspace Optimization of a 3DoF Cable-Based Parallel Robot
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Cable-driven robots are referred to as parallel robots actuated with cables. In fact,in such robots rigid links are replaced by cables, which may be extended to desired lengths without making mechanism much heavy. This robot possesses a number of unique properties that makes it suitable for many industrial applications. The main factor which makes cable robots analysis different from other parallel robots is the incapability of cables to push objects. Hence, obtaining the workspace of a cable robot is one of the most important subjects associated with this type of robot. The goal of this thesis is to design a spatial translational cable driven robot, which may be used for object handling. For...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khaloo, Ali Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent decades the use of FRP materials for strengthening structures has been developed extensively, thanks to their high strength, sufficient stiffness, high durablity, and ease of use. A great deal of research has been conducted on strengthening reinforced concrete beams and columns with FRP composites. By contrast, not many researches are performed on slabs, especially two-way slabs. In these few researches, the loading and boundary conditions are limited to simplest ones. Therefore, in this thesis, the focus of attention is on strengthening reinforced concrete slabs under various loads and boundary conditions using FRP composites.
In this thesis, first, FRP composites and their...

Data Sharing Aware Scheduling for Reducing Memory Accesses in GPGPUs
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hesabi, Shahin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Access to global memory is one of the bottlenecks in performance and energy in GPUs. Graphical processors uses multi-thread in streaming multiprocessors to reduce memory access latency. However, due to the high number of concurrent memory requests, the memory bandwidth of low level memorties and the interconnection network are quickly saturated. Recent research suggests that adjacent thread blocks share a significant amount of data blocks. If the adjacent thread blocks are assigned to specific streaming multiprocessor, shared data block can be rused by these thread blocks. However the thread block scheduler assigns adjacent thread blocks to different streaming multiprocessors that increase...
Combinatorial Optimization with Reinforcement Learning
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Saleh Kaleybar, Saber (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the key subjects in the area of mathematical optimization is a class of problems known as combinatorial optimization. We can find the optimal solution of continuous optimization problems feasible in time. But, in combinatorial optimization, we aim to obtain the optimal solution of the problem over a finite set. These problems are NP-hard and no polynomial-time solution has been proposed for this class of problems so far. Thus, in practical scenarios, we often use heuristic methods for solving NP-hard problems. There are lots of heuristic methods and choosing the best one in different situations might be challenging. In recent years, with the advances in deep neural networks,...

Abstract
This paper presents a framework for expansion planning studies of distributed energy storage systems (DESSs) in high wind penetrated power systems. The main objective is to find optimal location and capacity of DESSs in the viewpoint of independent system operator (ISO) while ensuring the maximum usage of wind farms output generation. Three different criteria are introduced for expansion planning studies. Minimizing wind curtailment cost together with transmission congestion cost are considered to properly deal with the issues associated with the curtailment of wind energy and constraints of transmission network. Furthermore, the minimum normalized profit for all DESSs' owners needs to be...

Abstract
Object handling is one of the most important applications of cable-suspended robots, which can be obtained by use of a gripper as its end-effector. In this paper, a novel cable-driven multi-finger gripper assembled on a cable-suspended robot has been presented. Using lock/unlock mechanisms, the under-actuated finger mechanism has been designed to have a human like motion. A cable-suspended robot structure with 3 position degrees of freedom is also proposed by employing active/passive cables in such a way that makes it capable of resisting external moments, while it may be simplified to a spatial point-mass cable robot during positioning operation. Furthermore, the robot workspace has been...
Application of Graph Theory and Matrices of Relations in Modeling Complex Systems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
Abstract
Design of complex systems requires different challenges to be met simultaneously. Yet the current methods lack a sound theoretic framework and thus designers normally rely on heuristic or empirical methods; based on available experiences. Such approaches to the system design entail both technical and business risks and subsequently increase the probability of long-term problems. In this research, along with the theoretical framework of the systems design concepts, we discuss number of important models. The main concentration of the work, however, is to; somehow, correlate Axiomatic Design Matrix (ADM) with Design Structure Matrix (DSM). Here we exploit mathematical model based on sets and by...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Salehkaleybar, Saber (Supervisor) ; Hashemi, Matin (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, thanks to improvement of processing hardware and plenty of data available, artificial intelligence and specifically Deep Learning are being one of the powerful tools for solving different problems. Also graph is one of the powerful tools for modeling different data structures. Graph matching is one of the problems in the field of graph problems. In this thesis we consider the problem of graph matching in Erdos-Renyi graphs. The graph matching problem refers to recovering the node-to-node correspondence between two correlated graphs. Previous works theoretically showed that recovering is feasible in sparse Erdos-R´enyi graphs if and only if the probability of having an edge between a...

Abstract
Due to the system-level power constraints, it is encountered that not all cores in a multicore chip can be simultaneously powered-on at the highest voltage/frequency levels. Also, in the future technology nodes, reliability issues due to the susceptibility of systems to transient faults should be considered in multicore platforms. Therefore, two major objectives in designing multicore embedded systems are low energy/power consumption and high reliability. This letter presents an energy management system that optimizes the energy consumption such that it satisfies reliability target and meets timing, thermal design power (TDP) and thermal safe power (TSP) constraints. Toward the...

Abstract
Mixed-criticality embedded systems, as the next-generation of safety-critical systems, are increasingly employed in the industry due to consolidating functionalities with varying criticality levels onto the same computing platform. Technology scaling, battery-supplied design, and heavy computation in mixed-criticality systems necessitate employing energy management techniques. Due to the degrading effects of these techniques on the system's reliability, minimizing energy consumption and meeting tasks’ timing constraints without sacrificing the reliability requirement is a vital challenge in designing mixed-criticality systems. In this paper, we propose REALISM; a novel Reliability- and...

On Feenberg’s Alternative Thinking About Virtual Space Technologies
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
Cultural and social problems in the modern age have motivated many thinkers to analyze modernity. Some of them have tried to solve these problems and, if possible, prevent their occurrence in the future. Proposed solutions are mostly dystopian, i.e. by being disappointed, they think the only possible way to overcome these problems is to annihilate modern civilization, or they pursue a passive approach; i.e. they have accepted the problems of modernity but only seek a way to mitigate its challenges. Among these, solutions which try to make use of the capacities of the modern civilization, especially emerging technologies, are really scarce. These approaches seek to realize (and make...
