Evolution of costly signaling and partial cooperation

Abstract
Two seemingly unrelated, but fundamental challenges in evolutionary theory, are the evolution of costly signals and costly cooperative traits, both expected to reduce an individual’s fitness and diminish by natural selection. Here, by considering a well mixed population of individuals who produce signals and decide on their strategies in a game they play, based on the signals, we show that costly signals and costly cooperative strategies can co-evolve as a result of internal dynamics of the system. Abstract
We consider a population of individuals living in an uncertain environment. Individuals are able to make noisy observations of the environment and communicate using signals. We show that the model shows an order-disorder transition from an ordered phase in low communication noise in which a consensus about the environmental state is formed to a disordered phase in high communication noise in which no consensus is formed. Gold nanotubes/nanowires (GNT/NW) were synthesized by using the template-assisted electrodeposition technique and mixed with castor oil-polyethylene glycol based polyurethane (PU) to fabricate porous composite scaffolds for biomedical application. 100 and 50 ppm of GNT/NW were used to synthesize composites. The composite scaffolds were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Abstract
This paper investigates local elastic buckling of thin long cylindrical shells under external pressure. Based on Donnell's and Sanders’ theories of thin shells and von Karman nonlinearity assumptions, the potential energy is derived. The buckling load and curves of the static equilibrium path are obtained using the Ritz method. The results are validated with the existing ones in the literature. Furthermore, the case where the pressure is perpendicular to the deformed state is compared with a dead loading. It is demonstrated that the former yields a lower critical pressure in both shell theories. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

We consider a population of mobile agents able to make noisy observations of the environment and communicate their observation by production and comprehension of signals. Individuals try to align their movement direction with their neighbors. Besides, they try to collectively find and travel towards an environmental direction. Abstract: In the current paper, the removal efficiency of metronidazole (MNZ) using a catalytic ozonation process (COP) in the presence of magnesium oxide nanocrystals, as a catalyst, was investigated in deionized water and compared with a sole ozonation process (SOP). The influence of several operational factors on both removal processes was evaluated: solution pH, MgO dosage, initial MNZ concentration, and reaction time. Biodegradability improvement, mineralization rate, oxidation intermediates, and toxicity were also studied for the COP. By combining the two ideas of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and PCL (Passive Coherent Location) in radar, one can achieve the advantages of both recently developed techniques simultaneously.
