    Abstract
In the high energy cosmic ray surface arrays, the primary energies are often determined by fitting the lateral distribution function to the distribution of detected secondary particles of extensive air showers. The accuracy of this model-dependent approach depends on the accuracy of the lateral distribution function and consequently can cause some difficulties. Here, we have presented a new model-independent method for finding core locations that uses two common principles of extensive air showers: The average distance between the secondary particles near the core location is smaller than in other regions. Also, the front of extensive air shower is thinner near the core and thicker in region...

    Abstract
Numerical modeling of the fully coupled phenomena of solid deformation-fluid flow in partially saturated porous media is of great interest in many branches of science and engineering. In this study, a new formulation based on one of the famous mesh-less methods, called Element-Free Galerkin (EFG), is developed to simulate the water and air movement through variably saturated soils. For this purpose, the governing partial differential equations including the equilibrium equation and mass conservation laws for each fluid phase are discretized in space using the same EFG shape functions. To enforce the essential boundary conditions, penalty method is employed. Temporal discretization is...

    Abstract
In the past few decades, numerical simulation of multiphase flow systems has received increasing attention because of its importance in various fields of science and engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model is developed for the analysis of simultaneous flow of two fluids through porous media. The numerical approach is fairly new based on the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method. The EFG is a type of mesh-less method which has rarely been used in the field of flow in porous media. The weak forms of the governing partial differential equations are derived by applying the weighted residual method and Galerkin technique. The penalty method is utilized for imposition of the...

    Abstract
Background: Real-time crash prediction models are often structured as general log-linear categorical models which must be calibrated using an extensive database. However, there is no method to optimally select the number of categories and the values that define the boundaries between categories when representing continuous measures as categorical variables within the log-linear model. This raises the question of how important the calibration is to the safety impacts estimated when using the crash prediction model. In this paper, we examined the impact that the process used to calibrate the crash prediction model has on estimates of safety impacts of a variable speed limit system. Methods:...

    Abstract
Hydraulic fracturing (HF) of underground formations has widely been used in different fields of engineering. Despite the technological advances in techniques of in situ HF, the industry uses semi-analytical tools to design HF treatment. This is due to the complex interaction among various mechanisms involved in this process, so that for thorough simulations of HF operations a fully coupled numerical model is required. In this study, using element-free Galerkin (EFG) mesh-less method, a new formulation for numerical modeling of hydraulic fracture propagation in porous media is developed. This numerical approach, which is based on the simultaneous solution of equilibrium and continuity...

Escort patterns in Dual-worker households with Students: A Comparison between Individual and Group Decision Making Mechanism

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmati, Yalda (Author) ; Samimi, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Individuals have been regarded as independent decision makers in the majority of transportation analysis. However, individual behaviors are usually affected by the interactions between the members in group decisions; and consequently, individual decision making paradigm could result in less-accurate predictions. Besides, as the data used for travel demand modeling typically comes from household level surveys, the idea of random sampling holds at household level and not the individual; and therefore, individual information would not be consistent with the theory of the discrete choice models when the household is the actual sampling unit. The present paper aims at modeling the way that...

Destination Choice Modeling For Shopping Trips; Case Study For The City of Shiraz

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahimi, Ehsan (Author) ; Samimi, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The fratar model that is one of the most common models of travel distribution has some weak points. Due to its strong tendency to existing distribution and disregarding the zonal characteristics, this model is unable to consider sudden changes in plan on the horizon. In order to identify the variables affecting the distribution of travel, using the behavioral approach is vital. For this purpose, Multinomial Logit model is used for distribution of shopping trips in the city of Shiraz. The city of Shiraz is divided into 156 zones. If all zones be considered as the choice set for each traveler, the results of model won't be efficient. To address this problem, sampling should be done based on...

Study on Very High Energy Cosmic Ray at Tehran Surface

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sheidaei, Farzaneh (Author) ; Samimi, Jalal (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The cosmic ray astronomy was born in 1937 when Victor Hess flied with his balloon to the height of 17,500 feet. He found that the cosmic rays come from out of atmosphere. There are three fundamental questions from that time. The goal of all cosmic ray's experimental activities and related theories is finding out the answer of these questions. The first question is about the energy and composition spectrum of cosmic rays. The second one is finding the sources which can product the very high energy particles such as the protons with the energy of 1021eV found in some observatory such as AGASA and Haverah Park. The last question is the process of diffusion of cosmic rays in the galaxy. One of...

Stochastic Analysis of Base-Isolated Structures Considering Soil-Structure Interaction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Samimi, Soheil (Author) ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main purpose of this study is stochastic analysis of base-isolated structures considering soil-structure interaction. Due to stochastic nature of earthquake and existence of uncertainties in non-linear behavior of and properties of soil, it is better to calculate the responses of the structure via random vibrations approach. In this approach first of all, the differential equations of structure are obtained in deterministic vibration mode and then by the available theories, differential equations of covariance of the responses are obtained. Solving these equations leads to the finding of the standard deviations of the responses of the structure in each moment. In backward differential...
