An improvement of the matrix-fracture transfer function in free fall gravity drainage
, Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 31, issue. 24 , Apr , 2011 , Pages. 2612-2620 ; 10916466 (ISSN) ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The simulation of fractured reservoir is conventionally performed by using dual porosity formulation in which the type of transfer function may be critical. Over the past few years, various models with their strength and weakness have been developed to account for matrix-fracture interporosity flow. However, some of them are unable to simulate some mechanisms like gravity drainage. In this work, the most well-known transfer functions have been examined for simulation of the gravity drainage in a single block model and an improvement has been introduced to modify them. The validation of the developed approach have been done by using fine grid simulation

Abstract
Iran is a country with numerous traffic accidents, offenses, and disruptions. According to the deterrence theory, increased detection of traffic offenses would decrease violations. Detection of traffic offenses is insufficient in Iran due to the limited operational capacity of the police. Reducing traffic violations would reduce accidents, disorders, and socio-economic costs. In this paper, a scheme for detecting and reporting speeding and parking violations to infringement processing through a crowdsourcing platform is proposed as a solution considering Iran's economic and social context. Two scenarios for detecting and reporting speeding and parking violations were considered: public...

Abstract
In this paper, a three-dimensional simulation of fully coupled multiphase fluid flow and heat transfer through deforming porous media is presented in the context of EFG mesh-less method. Spatial discretization of the system of governing equations is performed using EFG and a fully implicit finite difference scheme is employed for temporal discretization. Penalty method is used for imposition of essential boundary conditions. The developed numerical tool is employed to simulate two problems of nuclear waste disposal and CO2 sequestration in deep underground strata. The obtained results demonstrate the capability and robustness of the developed EFG code. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract
In fractured oil reservoirs, the gravity drainage mechanism has great potentials to higher oil recovery in comparison with other mechanisms. Recently, the forced gravity drainage assisted by gas injection has also been considered; however, there are few comprehensive studies in the literature. Dual porosity model, the most common approach for simulation of fractured reservoirs, uses transfer function concept to represent the fluid exchange between matrix and its neighborhood fractures. This study compares the results of different available transfer functions with those of fine grid simulations when forced gravity drainage contributes to oil production from a single matrix block. These...

Abstract
The activity and travel patterns of people with disabilities are generally distinct, as their activities are more dependent on others due to their special physical condition. This paper elaborates on the patterns of regular out-of-home activities (i.e. for different trip purposes) of disabled persons along with the way that they are accompanied to perform the activities. Household Travel Tracker Survey data collected by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning is used to develop new travel models. Two multinomial logit models are estimated to explore the influential variables and elaborate the consequences of ignoring their inter-dependency. From the influential parameters perspective,...

Abstract
Economic development and population growth in Tehran has increased demand for goods movement and road transportation. This trend has increased mobile source emissions and citizens’ exposure, imposing severe health risks. We used the framework of Land-Use Regression models to quantify the effect of real-time traffic, within buffer distance, on hourly exposure of CO, NO2, and PM2.5. Effect of residential, industrial, and governmental land-use in addition to the effect of pollution sources, such as construction sites and airport were assessed on air pollution. Meteorological variables were also employed to adjust between day variations. R-squared of the models were 38, 27, and 38% for CO, NO2,...

Abstract
We have simulated more than 105 extensive air showers (EAS) by CORSIKA code, with a proton as the primary particle. The range of energy for primary particles was selected from 50 TeV to 5 PeV, with differential flux given by dN/dE E-2.7. Using the secondary charged particles produced of these EASs, we obtained the function dNsp(θ,X)/dθ, where Nsp(θ,X) is the number of secondary charged particles in EASs as a function of atmosphere depth, X, and zenith angle, θ. A sin θcos n(X)θ distribution was obtained for zenith angle distribution of the number of secondary charged particles, where power index, n(X), is a function of atmosphere depth, X. We obtained n(X)=3.02+0.003Xln X-8.28×10-9X3-1.35ln...

Abstract
Crash forecasting enables safety planners to take appropriate actions before casualty or loss occurs. Identifying and analyzing the attributes influencing forecasting accuracy is of great importance in road crash forecasting. This study aims to model the forecasting accuracy of 31 provinces using their macroeconomic variables and road traffic indicators. Iran's road crashes throughout 2011–2018 are calibrated and cross-validated using the Holt-Winters (HW) forecasting method. The sensitivity of crash forecast reliability is studied by a regression model. The results suggested that the root mean square error (RMSE) of crash prediction increased among the provinces with higher and more variant...

Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the impact of mobility on the spread of COVID-19 in Tehran, Iran. We have performed a time series analysis between the indicators of public transit use and inter-city trips on the number of infected people. Our results showed a significant relationship between the number of infected people and mobility variables with both short-term and long-term lags. The long-term effect of mobility showed to have a consistent lag correlation with the weekly number of new COVID-19 positive cases. In our statistical analysis, we also investigated key non-transportation variables. For instance, the mandatory use of masks in public transit resulted in observing a 10% decrease in...

Abstract
Numerical modeling of the fully coupled phenomena of solid deformation-fluid flow in partially saturated porous media is of great interest in many branches of science and engineering. In this study, a new formulation based on one of the famous mesh-less methods, called Element-Free Galerkin (EFG), is developed to simulate the water and air movement through variably saturated soils. For this purpose, the governing partial differential equations including the equilibrium equation and mass conservation laws for each fluid phase are discretized in space using the same EFG shape functions. To enforce the essential boundary conditions, penalty method is employed. Temporal discretization is...
A novel three-dimensional element free Galerkin (EFG) code for simulating two-phase fluid flow in porous materials
, Article Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements ; Vol. 39, issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 53-63 ; ISSN: 09557997 ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In the past few decades, numerical simulation of multiphase flow systems has received increasing attention because of its importance in various fields of science and engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model is developed for the analysis of simultaneous flow of two fluids through porous media. The numerical approach is fairly new based on the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method. The EFG is a type of mesh-less method which has rarely been used in the field of flow in porous media. The weak forms of the governing partial differential equations are derived by applying the weighted residual method and Galerkin technique. The penalty method is utilized for imposition of the...
Sensitivity of a real-time freeway crash prediction model to calibration optimality
, Article European Transport Research Review ; Volume 4, Issue 3 , September , 2012 , Pages 167-174 ; 18670717 (ISSN) ; Hellinga, B ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Background: Real-time crash prediction models are often structured as general log-linear categorical models which must be calibrated using an extensive database. However, there is no method to optimally select the number of categories and the values that define the boundaries between categories when representing continuous measures as categorical variables within the log-linear model. This raises the question of how important the calibration is to the safety impacts estimated when using the crash prediction model. In this paper, we examined the impact that the process used to calibrate the crash prediction model has on estimates of safety impacts of a variable speed limit system. Methods:...

Abstract
Meshless methods are a relatively new type of numerical methods that have attracted the attention of many researchers over the past years. So far, a number of meshless methods have been developed and applied to solve problems in various fields of engineering, including solid mechanics and geotechnical problems. The Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method is adopted in this study for solving the governing partial differential equations of equilibrium and continuity of pore fluid flow for numerical simulation of coupled hydro-mechanical problems. For this purpose, the weak form of the governing equations is derived by applying the weighted residual method and Galerkin technique. The penalty method...

Abstract
Hydraulic fracturing (HF) of underground formations has widely been used in different fields of engineering. Despite the technological advances in techniques of in situ HF, the industry uses semi-analytical tools to design HF treatment. This is due to the complex interaction among various mechanisms involved in this process, so that for thorough simulations of HF operations a fully coupled numerical model is required. In this study, using element-free Galerkin (EFG) mesh-less method, a new formulation for numerical modeling of hydraulic fracture propagation in porous media is developed. This numerical approach, which is based on the simultaneous solution of equilibrium and continuity...

Abstract
Fully coupled flow-deformation analysis of deformable multiphase porous media saturated by several immiscible fluids has attracted the attention of researchers in widely different fields of engineering. This paper presents a new numerical tool to simulate the complicated process of two-phase fluid flow through deforming porous materials using a mesh-free technique, called element-free Galerkin (EFG) method. The numerical treatment of the governing partial differential equations involving the equilibrium and continuity equations of pore fluids is based on Galerkin’s weighted residual approach and employing the penalty method to introduce the essential boundary conditions into the weak forms....
Escort patterns in Dual-worker households with Students: A Comparison between Individual and Group Decision Making Mechanism
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Samimi, Amir (Supervisor)
Abstract
Individuals have been regarded as independent decision makers in the majority of transportation analysis. However, individual behaviors are usually affected by the interactions between the members in group decisions; and consequently, individual decision making paradigm could result in less-accurate predictions. Besides, as the data used for travel demand modeling typically comes from household level surveys, the idea of random sampling holds at household level and not the individual; and therefore, individual information would not be consistent with the theory of the discrete choice models when the household is the actual sampling unit. The present paper aims at modeling the way that...
