, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Modabber, Morteza (Author) ; Mohammadi, Somayeh (Supervisor) ; Saniee Monfared, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, reliability assessment of production systems is crucial for ensuring continuous production and minimizing operational and maintenance (O&M) costs. One way to assess reliability at the system level is to create a reliability block diagram (RBD) and estimate the failure rates of equipment over their operational periods. This approach has been utilized in this thesis, focusing on assessment of the reliability of various units within the methanol plant at Khark Petrochemical Complex. In this context, understanding the condition of the equipment criticality is essential for constructing the reliability block diagram. The Crespo model and total criticality per risk (CTR) measure have been...

Topology and vulnerability of the Iranian power grid

    , Article Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications ; Vol. 406, issue , July , 2014 , p. 24-33 ; ISSN: 03784371 Saniee Monfared, M. A ; Jalili, M ; Alipour, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper we investigated the structural properties of the ultra high voltage power transmission network of Iran. We modeled the power grid as a network with 105 nodes and 142 connection links. We found that the Iranian power grid displays a relatively moderate clustering coefficient-much larger than that of corresponding random networks-and small characteristics path length comparable to that of corresponding random networks; i.e. the power grid is a small-world network with exponential degree distribution. Global efficiency was considered as an indicator of grid's performance and the influence of random and intentional nodal failures on the efficiency was investigated. We also studied...

    Abstract
Smart environments are complex systems encompassing multitude of devices with complex interconnections and interactions. User must not only be able to figure out the devices’ functionalities, but also understand the architectural and semantic relations between various components. Providing such information leads to better understanding and user satisfaction, if users get the appropriate mental models. One way to train users about such smart environments is Interactive Realistic Virtual Reality based Simulations (IRVRS): multimedia rich collaborative 3D virtual environments. IRVRS also facilitate easy and inexpensive access to population masses, thus they can be used for conducting large...

Creating a TiAlN/ZrN Superlattice Nnanostructured Coating using Physical Vapour Deposition and Evaluating Coating Hardness

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Monfared, Ali Akbar (Author) ; Dolati, Abolqasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Despite the wide application of physical vapor deposition coating in various industries, one of the most important challenges is to achieve super hard coating with the help of this method. Super-hard coatings are coatings whose hardness is greater than 40 GPa. So far, various researches have been done to achieve this goal. One of the most important methods that has made it possible to achieve this goal is the creation of nanostructured coatings. Nanostructured coatings that cause a significant increase in hardness include superlattices and nanocomposites. In superlattice coatings, two layers with different shear modulus and lattice constant are deposited to each other with a very low...

    Abstract
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the different brain regions has been documented in clinical and laboratory experiments. Anodal tDCS on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has shown promising effects in enhancing cognition. Furthermore, such stimulations have been proposed in treatment of several neurological and psychological disorders. Investigations have verified the positive effect of such stimulations on drug addicts by diminishing their drug craving after stimulation. In spite of the extended research in this field, the effect of tDCS on different brain region and brain networks has yet not been studied through computational models. In this study, we evaluated...

    , Article 2004 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, Parma, 14 June 2004 through 17 June 2004 ; 2004 , Pages 218-221 Saniee, M ; Habibi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
Real-time, fuzzy rule-based guidance systems for autonomous vehicles on limited-access highways are investigated. The goal of these systems is to plan trajectories that are safe, while satisfying the driver's requests based on stochastic information about the vehicle's state and the surrounding traffic. This paper presented a new method to implement an automated highway driving behaviour. The main advantage of the suggested system is its well-defined structure. To test the designed system, a simulation tool is implemented. By using the described tool, we can analyse the operation of the implemented decision making system in a simulated highway. Results show an acceptable performance of the...

    Abstract
The process of monitoring the events occurring in a computer system or network and analyzing them for sign of intrusions is known as intrusion detection system (IDS). The objective of this paper is to extract fuzzy classification rules for intrusion detection in computer networks. The proposed method is based on the iterative rule learning approach (IRL) to fuzzy rule base system design. The fuzzy rule base is generated in an incremental fashion, in that the evolutionary algorithm optimizes one fuzzy classifier rule at a time. The performance of final fuzzy classification system has been investigated using intrusion detection problem as a high-dimensional classification problem. Results show...

    Abstract
Analyzing contact stress in rails and wheels are very important in mechanical and railway engineering. In this paper, new formulations of the contact stress are presented for two rolling bodies by exponential and power law forms semi-analytically. Innovative elastic wheel-rail contact models and FE Modeling are proposed. The present model assumes the collection of rail and wheel as elastic deformable bodies and needs numerical and novel analytical solutions. Results of this work are close to the Hertz Stress, previous published work and FEM results, in which good agreements are found among the results. So, we can rely on this method and their results. With this approach, suitable results...

Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm, calculates TLC acceptably. © 2004 IFAC

Modification of carbohydrate polymers via grafting in air. 1. Ceric-Induced synthesis of starch-g-polyacrylonitrile in presence and absence of oxygen [electronic resource]

    , Article Starch - Starke ; Volume 54, Issue 3-4, pages 140–147, April 2002 Pourjavadi, A. (Ali) ; Zohurian Mehr, Mohammad J
    Abstract
Monomer grafting, a unique technique for polysaccharide modification, is always performed under inert (e.g., N2) atmosphere. This work is the first report related to evaluating the possibility and efficiency of the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) onto starch in presence of oxygen. Thus, corn starch (in both granular and gelatinized states) as well as soluble starch were grafted by AN using a ceric-carbohydrate redox initiating system. Graft copolymerizations were performed under nitrogen, air, and oxygen atmospheres at similar conditions. Grafting occurrence was verified using chemical and spectral proofs. The polymerization mechanism and kinetics were investigated by recording the...

Modification of carbohydrate polymers via grafting in Air. 2. Ceric-Initiated graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile onto natural and modified polysaccharides [electronic resource]

    , Article Starch - Stärke ; Volume 54, Issue 10, pages 482–488, October 2002 Pourjavad, A. (Ali) ; Zohuriaan-Mehr, Mohammad J
    Abstract
Acrylonitrile (AN) was grafted onto various natural and modified polysaccharides (i.e., gum arabic, gum tragacanth, xanthan gum, sodium alginate, chitosan, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose) by using ceric-carbohydrate redox initiating system. After overcoming practical problems, mainly from the high viscosity of the aqueous solutions of the different substrates, the graft copolymerization reactions were run either in air or in N2 atmosphere under similar conditions. Grafting was confirmed using chemical and spectral (FTIR) proofs. The reactions were kinetically investigated using semi-empirical expressions and time-temperature profiles. An anomalous...

    Abstract
Cascade impactors are the instruments which are used to assess the particle size distribution and the cut off diameter. Cascade impactors are wildly used for hygiene purposes, environmental, and toxicological studies. However, to find out the accurate size distribution, the cut off diameter of each stage which is different for different types of impactors with different geometry specifications should be determined. In this study first the basis of the cascade impactor operation is described. Next, different types of cascade impactors are introduced, and the Andersen Cascade Impactor (ACI) is chosen to design. The design criteria are explained and the dimension of each stage, entrance cone,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Panah, Hossein (Author) ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Ghannad, Mohammad Ali (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Statistical studies indicate the fact that in Iran, like many other developing countries, a significant percentage of buildings are made of traditional materials and most of them are adobe buildings especially in rural areas. Furthermore, geological data indicates that Iran is located in alps-Himalayas seismic zone and exposed by destructive earthquakes and adobe buildings suffer the most damages comparing with other type of the structures. According to these explanations, this research deals with adobe buildings behavior and provides solutions for reinforcing them and improving the seismic response of these buildings. These studies include numerical modeling with finite elements methods by...

    Abstract
In this paper, we use simulated annealing heuristics for constructing an intrusion detection system (IDS). The proposed IDS combines the learning ability of simulated annealing heuristics with the approximate reasoning method of fuzzy systems. The use of simulated annealing is an effort to effectively explore the large search space related to intrusion detection problems, and find the optimum set of fuzzy if-then rules. The aim of this paper is to present the capability of simulated annealing based fuzzy system to deal with intrusion detection classification problem as a new real-world application area. Experiments were performed with KDD-Cup99 intrusion detection benchmark data set. © 2008...

    Abstract
In recent years, application of silica nanoparticles for wettability alteration of reservoir rocks as an effective approach in enhancing oil recovery from petroleum reservoirs is introduced. However, in this area, lack of fundamental studies to provide a clear understanding about the interaction between these nanoparticles and carbonate rocks (as the predominant reservoir rocks in the world and Iran), which is of particular importance, is sensed. Therefore, the main purpose of this dissertation is to present a mechanistic investigation about the interaction of silica nanoparticles (the most used nanoparticles) with carbonate rock from theoretical and experimental viewpoints. To better...

Distributed Fault-tolerant Computation for Massive Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahvari Habibabadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Maddah-Ali, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we consider the problem of distributed computation by many processors. We mainly concentrate on matrix multiplication problem in this thesis because of its importance. A distributed system consists of N worker processors and one master processor. The master processor should distribute the computation between workers and after computation in each of them, collect the results. In this thesis, we are going to mitigate the effect of straggler processors by using coding methods. Straggler processors can cause delays in the computation time.In this thesis, we firstly introduce a method to multiply any number of matrices in each other. The proposed method occurred in one shot without...
