Robust Nonlinear Control of a Jet Tail-sitter UAV in Hovering Flight Phase
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Saghafi, Fariborz (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, the theory of robust control is applied to design a controller for the longitudinal dynamics of a tail-sitter jet engine unmanned aerial vehicle. The engine thrust deflection is considered as the input controller of the system. The aircraft dynamical model is developed based on the assumption of no aerodynamic loads in low speed flight associated with the hovering condition. The controller is primarily designed using both classical and modern control techniques. Then and synthesis approaches are applied to design the robust controller. The results obtained from different approaches are compared. It is shown that the robust controller techniques are more stable and robust...
Numerical Simulation of Particle Settling in Sedimentation Basins using the LES Model
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Firouzabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siyamak (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sedimentation basins are one of the most important and costly processes of water treatment, in which the process of particle settling takes place using gravity. There are two types of sedimentation basins namely, primary and secondary basins. In the primary basins, due to the low concentration of particles, in simulation, it is possible to ignore the effect of particles on the equation of motion. But in the secondary type because of buoyancy forces (which is dependent on particle concentration), the particles affect the flow field. So far, various studies have been done on the simulation of sedimentation basins with numerical methods, but a comprehensive research on the simulation of...

Abstract
This paper deals with realization of fractional-order impedance functions by passive electrical networks composed of a fractional capacitor and some RLC components. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such a realization are found in a general case. Also for impedance functions described by a class of fractional-order transfer functions, the realizability conditions are stated as some algebraic conditions on the parameters of the transfer function. Moreover, a procedure is proposed for implementation of such impedance functions by passive electrical networks composed of a fractional capacitor and some RLC components. Numerical examples are presented to show the...

Abstract
In this paper, conditions for checking the realizability of fractional-order impedance functions by passive networks composed of a fractional element (either a fractional capacitor or a fractional inductor) and some RLC components are derived. To this end, at first the newly obtained conditions for realizability of fractional-order impedance functions by a passive network composed of a fractional capacitor and some RLC components are extended to include the case that the polynomials involving in the impedance function can have roots on the imaginary axis. Then, the necessary and sufficient conditions are found on a fractional-order impedance function to be realized by a passive network...

Abstract
This paper deals with the consensus problem in an uncertain multi-agent system whose agents communicate with each other through a weighted undirected (primary) graph. The considered multi-agent system is described by an uncertain state-space model in which the involved matrices belong to some matrix boxes. As the main contribution of the paper, a unified optimization-based framework is proposed for simultaneously reducing the weights of the edges of the primary communication graph (optimizing the network topology) and synthesizing a controller such that the consensus in the considered uncertain multi-agent system is ensured with an adjustable convergence rate. Considering the NP-hardness...

Abstract
This article deals with solving distributed optimization problems with equality constraints by a class of uncertain nonlinear heterogeneous dynamic multiagent systems. It is assumed that each agent with an uncertain dynamic model has limited information about the main problem and limited access to the information of the state variables of the other agents. A distributed algorithm that guarantees cooperatively solving of the constrained optimization problem by the agents is proposed. Via applying this algorithm, the agents do not need to continuously broadcast their data. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can be useful in solving resource allocation problems. IEEE

Conditions Derivation of Implementability of Fractional-Order Functions by Passive Electrical Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tavazoei, Mohammad Saleh (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today, the fractional-order systems are widely used in the system identification and design and implementation of control systems. By production of electrical elements with fractional-order relationship between voltage and current of their terminals, implementation of fractional-order functions with passive elements is possible. Fractional order capacitors are one of these elements. It was shown that necessary and sufficient condition for the implementation of an integer order function by passive elements is positive realness of such a function.
Like systems with integer-order, in this thesis the aim is to find corresponding conditions for implementation of fractional-order functions...

Networked Cyber-Physical Dynamical Systems with Distributed Optimization-Based Missions
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Tavazoei, Mohammad Saleh (Supervisor)
Abstract
A new generation of physical and industrial systems is evolving towards communication and information technology as communication and information technologies progress. Cyber-Physical Systems, or CPSs, are physical systems situated in a cyber environment and use communication and information technology to improve efficiency. A CPS is an integrated synthesis of the principles of "control," "communication," and "computation" from an engineering point of view, attempting to provide a comprehensive framework in which all aspects of these three fields are covered. One of the capabilities of CPSs is the ability to deal with and implement a large scale system. A group of control missions in large...
Experimental Analysis of Effective Parameters in Hole Cleaning of Directional Wells While Drilling
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the major problems in directional and extended reach wells is poor hole cleaning. Directional and horizontal drilling is more complex than vertical wells. Ineffective particles transport leads to several undesirable issues during drilling. This thesis analyzed all parameters which have directly affected directional hole cleaning. The thesis is based on an experimental set-up designed in Sharif University. In the experimental work, two types of drilling fluid, Newtonian and Non-Newtonian with numerous rheological parameters, three different flow rate, three various nozzle sizes and three individual RPMs in three distinct inclinations 30°, 60° and 90° were used to simulate. Also, to...

Abstract
We investigate the problem of practical output regulation: Design a controller that brings the system output in the vicinity of a desired target value while keeping the other variables bounded. We consider uncertain systems that are possibly nonlinear and the uncertainty of the linear part is modeled element-wise through a parametric family of matrix boxes. An optimization-based design procedures is proposed that delivers a continuous-time control and estimates the maximal regulation error. We also analyze an event-triggered emulation of this controller, which can be implemented on a digital platform, along with an explicit estimates of the regulation error. IEEE

Abstract
In recent years, the spread of neurological disorders worldwide has been increasing, especially in developing countries. Due to the unknown function, complexity, and high importance of the brain, such disorders have been pervasive, severe, prolonged, and impose enormous costs on the individual, the family, and the community. Thus, increasing the knowledge about the brain and its areas in various activities is too vital and can facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of many different and unknown neuro- logical disorders. Different kinds of research have been done to automatically process and find the active and vital areas in various states and brain activities. The problem with most of these...
Proposing a new model to approximate the elasticity modulus of granite rock samples based on laboratory tests results

Abstract
An accurate examination of deformability of rock samples in response to any change in stresses is deeply dependent on the reliable determination of properties of the rock as analysis inputs. Although Young’s modulus (E) can provide valuable characteristics of the rock material deformation, the direct determination of E is considered a time-consuming and complicated analysis. The present study is aimed to introduce a new hybrid intelligent model to predict the E of granitic rock samples. Hence, a series of granitic block samples were collected from the face of a water transfer tunnel excavated in Malaysia and transferred to laboratory to conduct rock index tests for E prediction. Rock index...
