    , Article Optics Letters ; Volume 37, Issue 15 , 2012 , Pages 3078-3080 ; 01469592 (ISSN) Hosseinnia, A. H ; Khavasi, A ; Sarrafi, P ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An efficient frequency-domain method, the phase variation monitoring (PVM) method, is proposed to determine the electromagnetic eigenmodes in two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides. The proposed method is based on monitoring the reflection and transmission coefficients of incident plane waves. It is successfully applied to an illustrative line-defect photonic crystal waveguide and proved to be capable of calculating the in-plane leakage through the finite-size photonic crystal surrounding the line-defect. Calculation of the leakage loss is not only important for proper understanding of wave propagation within the defect but also for its significant role in applications of photonic...

Fast convergent and unconditionally stable galerkin's method with adaptive hermite-gauss expansion for guided-mode extraction in two-dimensional photonic crystal based waveguides

    Abstract
It has been recently shown that guided modes in two-dimensional photonic crystal based structures can be fast and efficiently extracted by using the Galerkin's method with Hermite-Gauss basis functions. Although quite efficient and reliable for photonic crystal line defect waveguides, difficulties are likely to arise for more complicated geometries, e.g., for coupled resonator optical waveguides. First, unwanted numerical instability may well occur if a large number of basis functions are retained in the calculation. Second, the method could have a slow convergence rate with respect to the truncation order of the electromagnetic field expansion. Third, spurious solutions are not unlikely to...

Surface electromagnetic waves supported by nano conducting layers with inhomogeneities in the conductivity profile

    , Article Optical and Quantum Electronics ; Volume 40, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 23-40 ; 03068919 (ISSN) Sarrafi, P ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Conducting interfaces and nano conducting layers can support surface electromagnetic waves. Uniform charge layers of non-zero thickness and their asymptotic behavior toward conducting interfaces of infinitely small thicknesses, where the thin charge layer is modeled via a surface conductivity σ s , are already studied. Here, the possible effects of inhomogeneity in the conductivity profile of the thin conducting layers are investigated for the first time and a new approximate yet accurate enough analytical formulation for mode extraction in such structures is given. In order to rigorously analyze the structure and justify the proposed approximate formulation, the Galerkin's method with...

Application of the splitting approach to solve population balance equations in chemical processes

    Abstract
Different processes in chemical industries deal with particles and multiphase flow. In such processes, particle or bubble size distribution (PSD) influences the final product quality and also process design. On the other hand, solutions to the dominant hydrodynamic and thermo-kinetic equations ignoring these distributions will make it impossible to accurately simulate these processes. Solutions to population balance equations (PBE's) are needed to attain the PSD. One of the most common methods for the solution of a PBE is the classes method (CM). However, as this method requires a large number of classes to give a reasonable result, it needs a huge amount of calculations and time. To...

"Bubble bunch" phenomenon in operation of a bubble column

    , Article Central European Journal of Chemistry ; Volume 7, Issue 4 , 2009 , Pages 803-808 ; 18951066 (ISSN) Bastani, D ; Baghaei, A ; Sarrafi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
While studying the operation of a rectangular bubble column in laboratory scale, it was observed that under certain circumstances tiny bubbles attach to larger bubbles without causing them to coalesce. In other words, bubbles with large diameters (d > 5 mm) swept tiny bubbles (d < 1 mm) in their way to the top of the column resulting in grapelike clusters of bubbles. This phenomenon was named "bubble bunch" by us and its effect on total gas holdup and interfacial area was discussed. Although it was found to have almost no affect on gas holdup, bubble bunch can increase the interfacial area up to 10% more than what is anticipated in the literature. The process of film thinning was modeled for...

Greatly reduced radiation loss in planar waveguides with two-dimensional conducting interfaces

    , Article IET Optoelectronics ; Volume 2, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 158-164 ; 17518768 (ISSN) Sarrafi, P ; Zareian, N ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A new strategy for radiation loss reduction in curved slab waveguides is presented. The proposed strategy is based on the proper modification of the boundary conditions at the core-to-cladding interface, whereupon extremely thin conductive nanolayers with non-zero surface conductance are imposed. The obtained numerical results show a noticeable decrease in the overall loss level. © 2008 The Institution of Engineering and Technology

Analytical extraction of leaky modes in circular slab waveguides with arbitrary refractive index profile

    , Article Applied Optics ; Volume 46, Issue 36 , 2007 , Pages 8656-8667 ; 1559128X (ISSN) Sarrafi, P ; Zareian, N ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Circular slab waveguides are conformally transformed into straight inhomogeneous waveguides, where-upon electromagnetic fields in the core are expanded in terms of Legendre polynomial basis functions. Thereafter, different analytical expression of electromagnetic fields in the cladding region, viz. Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin solution, modified Airy function expansion, and the exact field solution for circular waveguides, i.e., Hankel function of complex order, are each matched to the polynomial expansion of the transverse electric field within the guide. This field matching process renders different boundary conditions to be satisfied by the set of orthogonal Legendre polynomial basis...

    Abstract
The possibility of electromagnetic slow wave propagation in dielectric slab waveguides, when free two-dimensional interface charge layers are generated at film-substrate and film-cover interfaces, is already explored. In this paper, the propagation of electromagnetic slow waves supported by induced charge layers of nonzero thickness, whose induced charge densities have Gaussian profiles, is investigated for the first time. In order to analyze the effects of inhomogeneity in the conductivity profile, the electric field is expanded in terms of Hermite polynomials and each eigenmode is sought in the complete space spanned by them. © 2007 IEEE

    Abstract
A high-quality butt joint of aluminum to copper (Al/Cu) can rarely be achieved by conventional fusion and solid-state welding processes. In this research, the appropriateness of friction stir welding (FSW) for making high-quality Al/Cu welds was studied. A sound Al/Cu butt joint was achieved with relatively high strength in uni-axial tensile tests. Mechanical properties and microstructure of the sound friction stir welds were examined. The ultimate tensile strength of the joints reached about 75 percent of the aluminum base metal, with the fracture occurring at aluminum side. The metallurgical study of the welds before and after their failure in tensile tests showed that the heat affected...

    Abstract
A rigorous, fast and efficient method is proposed for analytical extraction of guided defect modes in two-dimensional photonic crystals, where each Bloch spatial harmonic is expanded in terms of Hermite-Gauss functions. This expansion, after being substituted in Maxwell's equations, is analytically projected in the Hilbert space spanned by the Hermite-Gauss basis functions, and then a new set of first order coupled linear ordinary differential equations with non-constant coefficients is obtained. This set of equations is solved by employing successive differential transfer matrices, whereupon defect modes, i.e. the guided modes propagating in the straight line-defect photonic crystal...

    Abstract
Using polynomial expansion of electromagnetic fields has been already reported for extraction of E polarized defect modes in two-dimensional photonic crystals. This approach is now applied to straight single-line defect optical waveguides, where H polarized defect modes are analytically extracted for the first time. Electromagnetic fields are expanded in accordance with the Floquet theorem, where each Floquet order is itself expanded in terms of Hermite polynomials and finally a new set of linear ordinary differential equations with non-constant coefficients is obtained. This set of equations is handled by employing differential transfer matrix method. In this fashion, algebraic and easy to...

    Abstract
The influence of different parameters such as welding pressure, rotational speed, and traverse speed on the weld properties has been evaluated earlier but there are some important parameters yet to be thoroughly investigated. In this study, an effort has been made to determine the influence of different ratios of rotational speed/traverse speed on mechanical properties of different zones of friction stir welded AZ31 magnesium alloy. Mechanical properties of different zones were determined by a shear punch test. It was found out that increasing the aforementioned ratio leads to a slight decrease in yield and ultimate strength of the stir zone and the transitional zone. It was also observed...

    Abstract
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a novel solid state welding process for joining materials. In this process a high speed tool is introduced into the weld seam and due to localized frictional heat, plastic deformation and transverse movement along the weld seam, joining is accomplished. In this study aluminum matrix composite A356 + 15%SiCp is chosen for friction stir welding. Fragmentation of SiC particles and silicon needles existing in eutectic phase as well as their homogenous distribution as a result of stirring with high plastic strains, improve mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity, yield and ultimate strength, elongation and hardness in the weld zone compared to that of...

Secrecy capacity scaling in large cooperative wireless networks

    Abstract
We investigate large wireless networks subject to security constraints. In contrast to point-to-point, interferencelimited communications considered in prior works, we propose active cooperative relaying-based schemes. We consider a network with nl legitimate nodes, ne eavesdroppers, and path loss exponent α ≥ 2. As long as n2e (log(ne))γ = o(nl ), for some positive γ , we show that one can obtain unbounded secure aggregate rate. This means zero-cost secure communication, given fixed total power constraint for the entire network. We achieve this result through: 1) the source using Wyner randomized encoder and a serial (multi-stage) block Markov scheme, to cooperate with the relays and 2) the...

Fast estimation of connectivity in fractured reservoirs using percolation theory

    , Article SPE Journal ; Volume 12, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 167-178 ; 1086055X (ISSN) Masihi, M ; King, P. R ; Nuratza, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Investigating the impact of geological uncertainty (i.e., spatial distribution of fractures) on reservoir performance may aid management decisions. The conventional approach to address this is to build a number of possible reservoir models, upscale them, and then run flow simulations. The problem with this approach is that it is computationally very expensive. In this study, we use another approach based on the permeability contrasts that control the flow, called percolation approach. This assumes that the permeability disorder of a rock can be simplified to either permeable or impermeable. The advantage is that by using some universal laws from percolation theory, the effect of the complex...

    Abstract
Recently, a new class of binary codes for overloaded CDMA systems are proposed that not only has the ability of errorless communication but also suitable for detecting active users. These codes are called COWDA. In [1], a Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoder is proposed for this class of codes. Although the proposed scheme for coding/decoding shows impressive performance, the decoder can be significantly improved. In this paper, by assuming practical conditions for the traffic in the system, we suggest and prove an algorithm that increases the performance of the decoder several orders of magnitude (the Bit-Error-Rate (BER) is divided by a factor of about 400 in some E b/N0's). The algorithm...

Estimation of the Effective Permeability of Heterogeneous Porous Media by Using Percolation Concepts

    Abstract
In this paper we present new methods to estimate the effective permeability (keff) of heterogeneous porous media with a wide distribution of permeabilities and various underlying structures, using percolation concepts. We first set a threshold permeability (kth) on the permeability density function and use standard algorithms from percolation theory to check whether the high permeable grid blocks (i.e., those with permeability higher than kth) with occupied fraction of “p” first forms a cluster connecting two opposite sides of the system in the direction of the flow (high permeability flow pathway). Then we estimate the effective permeability of the heterogeneous porous media in different...

    Abstract
It has long been understood that flow behavior in heterogeneous porous media is largely controlled by the continuity of permeability contrasts. With this in mind, we are looking in new methods for a fast estimation of the effective permeability which concentrates on the properties of the percolating cluster. From percolation concepts we use a threshold permeability value (Kth) by which the gridblocks with the highest permeability values connect two opposite side of the system in the direction of the flow. Those methods can be applied to heterogeneous media of a range of permeabilities distribution and various underlying structures. We use power law relations and weighted power averages that...

    Abstract
Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films have been deposited using RF sputtering technique at different pressures, RF powers, and substrate temperatures. Variations in surface morphology, optical properties, and film resistances were measured and analyzed. It is shown that a very low value of sheet resistance (1.96 ω/sq.) can be achieved with suitable arrangement of the deposition experiments. First, at constant RF power, deposition at different pressure values is done, and the condition for achieving minimum sheet resistance (26.43 ω/sq.) is found. In the next step, different values of RF powers are tried, while keeping the pressure fixed on the previously found minimum point (1-2 Pa). Finally,...
