, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Behzadi Poor, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
The Quadriceps Muscle as one of the major muscles of the human body plays a key role in knee function. Strengthening of this muscle is recommanded to prevent knee pain and even cure some diseases. Many believe that by strengthening the medial part with respect to the lateral part of the quadriceps muscles, patellofemoral pain syndrome can be prevented or treated. In this regard, a muscle strengthening system, based on magneticorheological brake is designed which provides isometric, isotonic and isokinetic exercise of knee joint and also enables the selective muscle strengthening. Beforehand a musculoskeletal model of lower extremity is developed in OpenSim software, capable to estimate force...
Motion Planning & Control of Mobile Robots
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Wheeled mobile robots form a subcategory of mobile robots and are usually accompanied with geometric constraints on their velocities. These constraints do not allow the robots to move in any path that only does not collide with obstacles, in order to move from one point to another. On the other hand, the nonlinear nature of these systems make their control difficult. A general approach in motion planning and control for mobile robots is using standard forms equivalent to their state equations; Usually, solving motion planning and control problems for these forms is easier than that of the original system. Also, the mentioned problems are more prospective to have a systematic solution for...

Abstract
This paper presents the stability analysis for a single-phase phase-locked loop (PLL) for power systems applications. The dynamical equations of a previously presented single-phase PLL are systematically derived and linearized for design and stability analysis purposes. Based on the linearized model of the PLL, parameters of the loop filter and the PI controller are accurately determined. The main advantages of the PI controller are discussed as well as its design procedure. Moreover, it is shown that, unlike the conventional single-phase PLLs, the mentioned PLL does not suffer from double-frequency ripples. Simulations carried out in MATLAB and SIMULINK verify the performance of the PLL...
Modern Approaches to Scattering Amplitude with Applications
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Torabian, Mahdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this thesis, we first explain how we can construct three-point amplitudes for both massive and massless particles by solely knowing the Lorentz invariance and spin or helicity of particles. Then, using BCFW recursion relation, we determine the tree-level amplitudes. To calculate the loop amplitude, we apply the unitarity of Smatrix. The unitarity relates the tree-level amplitudes to loop level. Finally, I discuss some exciting topics in this field, including color-kinematics duality, some relevant applications of contemporary S-matrix theory in effective field theories

The meaning of smooth acceleration curve is to reduce jerk and shock caused by inappropriate driver behaviors and to control the car's torque and acceleration to a desirable level. In this project, first, the...
Detection of Change in Nonlinear Profiles using Kriging and Comparison with Self Organizing Clustering Method
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahlooji, Hashem (Supervisor)
Abstract
Control Charts are the most popular monitoring tools for profiles. The time that a control chart gives an out-of-control signal is not the real time of change. The actual time of change is called the change point. This study suggests two new algorithms to find the change (shift) in parameters of nonlinear profiles. First, using ordinary Kriging method, new points are estimated. Then, with the help of Bernoulli hypothesis test, the probability of detecting the change for new points is tested. Nonlinear profiles in this study follow the exponential family of distributions; in particular, Exponential, Poison and Gaussian distribution structures are used as nonlinear profiles. The proposed...
A Robust Simulation Optimization Algorithm using Bayesian Method
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akhavan Niaki, Taghi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Huge availability of data in last decade has raised the opportunity to use data for decision making. The idea of using existing data to achieve more coherent reality solution has led to a branch of optimization called data-driven optimization. Presence of uncertain variables makes it crucial to design robust optimization methods for this area. On the other hand, in many real-world problems, the closed-form of the objective function is not available and a meta-model based framework is necessary. Motivated by this, we are using a Gaussian process in a Bayesian optimization framework to design a method that is consistent with the data in predefined confidence level. The goodness of the...

Abstract
A heuristic approach is proposed to solve a real Periodic Vehicle Routing Problem (PVRP) that aims at extending the market share with the minimum transportation cost. In PVRP, vehicles are assigned to routes in different workdays to satisfy the frequency of visiting customers. The objective is to determine the scheduling and routing policies of the vehicles to minimise the fleet size and to maximise the selling benefits. The vehicle capacity and the trip time are the main constraints. The proposed approach is verified by real data and obtained results imply a significant improvement as compared to the current status

Abstract
In this paper, Bat Algorithm is proposed to solve the Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem. The approach employs a Meta heuristic optimization algorithm called bat optimization algorithm to determine the optimal settings of control variables of OPF problem. The performance of proposed method examined on the IEEE 9, 14, 30 and 57-buses test systems with fuel cost minimization as the objective function. The numerical results are compared to those of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Harmony Search (HS) and Cuckoo algorithms. Simulation results obtained from the proposed approach demonstrate that this method provide effective and robust high-quality answer for the OPF problem. © 2016 IEEE

, Article IET Communications ; July 2011, Volume 5, Issue 10, P. 1328-1335 ; Mashhadi, Saeed ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this study the authors present an in-depth study, analysis and discussion on maximum likelihood (ML)-based receiver for a typical spectrally encoded spread-time CDMA in the presence of multiple narrowband interference (NBI) signals in an additive white Gaussian noise channel. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate that by combining useful properties of ML-based receiver and three-level codes, that is, codes with values of -1, 0, +1, the authors can introduce a new strategy in which superior performance with respect to previous receiver structure based on two-level codes, that is, codes with values of -1, +1, can be attained. With the help of an example, the authors drive, first, the...

Abstract
Petroleum monoaromatics including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) are among the notorious volatile organic compounds that contaminate water and soil. In this study, a surfactant- modified natural zeolite and its relevant granulated nanozeolites were evaluated as potential adsorbents for removal of petroleum monoaromatics from aqueous solutions. All experiments performed in batch mode at constant temperature of 20°C and pH of 6.8 for 48 h. The results revealed that the amount of BTEX uptake on granulated zeolites nanoparticles were remarkably higher than the parent micron size natural zeolite (in the order of four times). The isotherms data were analyzed using five models...
Investigation of Multiphase Flow in Oil Wells (with Focus on Two Phase Flow), Flow Pattern Recognition and Modeling
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
The concurrent flow of oil and water is a common occurrence in the field of multiphase flow in different fields including petroleum industry. In oil and gas, production engineers often face a situation in which more than one phase is flowing through the producers. In such conditions an accurate assessment of pressure loss inside the well plays a vital role in efficient and effective production planning. Changes in well orientation, wellbore diameter, reservoir and fluid properties as well as fluid flow rates are among parameters in which will affect the flow patterns that can occur inside a well during its life time. These flow patterns are created as a result of a competition between...
Casing Design Optimization Considering Drilling and Production Conditions
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Casing design is one of the most expensive parts in the drilling of oil wells, and any cost reduction with the basic design of these casing strings will significantly reduce the total cost of the operation. In recent years, occurring scenarios-based casing design has become popular; Because in many cases, it eliminates non-occurring scenarios such as gas kick and saves on drilling costs. In this study, we have tried to investigate all scenarios that may occur during the lifetime of the well, whether drilling or production, and for each well, based on its own field information, possible scenarios for each casing part are selected separately and the applying loads are calculated. For this...
PRI (Palm Rotation Indicator): a metric for postural stability in dynamic nonprehensile manipulation [electronic resource]
, Article Journal of MECHANIKA ; 2012, Vol. 18, No. 4, pp. 461-466 ; Meghdar, Ali ; Sohrabpour, Saeed ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this study, we discuss the postural stability of a nonprehensile manipulation problem, which deals with multibody objects. As a metric for postural stability, we define PRI. Then, the system is posturally stable, if PRI is inside the convex hull of the object-manipulator contact surface. We then discuss that dynamic biped locomotion is a special case of dynamic nonprehensile manipulation in all aspects; we prove that ZMP (zero-moment point) and FRI (zoot rotation indicator) are special cases of PRI (palm rotation indicator). Simulations and experiments corresponding to simple examples support the results
