Structural virality estimation and maximization in diffusion networks

    , Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 206 , 2022 ; 09574174 (ISSN) Sepehr, A ; Beigy, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Social media usage is one of the most popular online activities and people shares millions of message in a short time; however this information rarely goes viral. The diffusion process begins with an initial set of source nodes and continues with other nodes. In addition, the viral cascade is triggered when the number of infected nodes exceeds a specific threshold. Then, we find an initial set of source nodes that maximizes the number of infected nodes given the source nodes. This study aims to answer the following questions: how does a spread like a viral cascade propagate in a network? Do the structural properties of the propagation pattern play an important role in virality? If so, can we...

    Abstract
Recent advances in storage and processing have provided the ability of automatic gathering of information which in turn leads to fast and contineous flow of data. The data which are produced and stored in this way are named data streams. It has many applications such as processing financial transactions, the recorded data of various sensors or the collected data by web sevices. Data streams are produced with high speed, large size and much dynamism and have some unique properties which make them applicable in precise modeling of many real data mining applications. The main challenge of data streams is the occurrence of concept drift which can be in four types: sudden, gradual, incremental or...

Fault-tolerant Attitude Control of Sattelite Using Neural Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sepehr, Firoozeh (Author) ; Asadian, Nima (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research aims to introduce a new integrated fault tolerant attitude control system of satellites based on the neural networks. First, a linear controller and an optimal controller are designed assuming that no fault occurs in the reaction wheels of the satellite. It is obvious that these controllers are not able to respond properly when a fault occurs. Therefore, artificial neural networks are employed in the fault tolerant controller design. Neural networks are well-known for their adaptiveness and the ability to learn the dynamics of a system. Therefore, they can be used to predict the faulty conditions. In this research two approaches are examined to deal with the faulty conditions....

    , Article 2008 International Symposium on Telecommunications, IST 2008, Tehran, 27 August 2008 through 28 August 2008 ; October , 2008 , Pages 295-300 ; 9781424427512 (ISBN) Hamidi Sepehr, F ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are well-promising future networks especially for ubiquitous connection to Internet. In this paper, we propose an analytical model in order to evaluate the maximum stable throughput of a WMN based on a simplified version of IEEE 802.11s MAC protocol. Our modeling approach is based on a multi-class open queueing network. In this respect, we map some of the important features of IEEE 802.11s MAC protocol, esp., its contention-based and contention-free periods onto different parameters of the proposed queueing network. By solving the related traffic equations and applying the stability condition, we determine the maximum stable throughput, i.e., the maximum packet...

    , Article 2012 11th International Conference on Information Science, Signal Processing and their Applications, ISSPA 2012, 2 July 2012 through 5 July 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 1383-1387 ; 9781467303828 (ISBN) Seifi, S ; Karimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper presents the stability analysis for a single-phase phase-locked loop (PLL) for power systems applications. The dynamical equations of a previously presented single-phase PLL are systematically derived and linearized for design and stability analysis purposes. Based on the linearized model of the PLL, parameters of the loop filter and the PI controller are accurately determined. The main advantages of the PI controller are discussed as well as its design procedure. Moreover, it is shown that, unlike the conventional single-phase PLLs, the mentioned PLL does not suffer from double-frequency ripples. Simulations carried out in MATLAB and SIMULINK verify the performance of the PLL...

Motion Planning & Control of Mobile Robots

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seifi, Sepehr (Author) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wheeled mobile robots form a subcategory of mobile robots and are usually accompanied with geometric constraints on their velocities. These constraints do not allow the robots to move in any path that only does not collide with obstacles, in order to move from one point to another. On the other hand, the nonlinear nature of these systems make their control difficult. A general approach in motion planning and control for mobile robots is using standard forms equivalent to their state equations; Usually, solving motion planning and control problems for these forms is easier than that of the original system. Also, the mentioned problems are more prospective to have a systematic solution for...

Modern Approaches to Scattering Amplitude with Applications

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seifi, Aslan (Author) ; Torabian, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we first explain how we can construct three-point amplitudes for both massive and massless particles by solely knowing the Lorentz invariance and spin or helicity of particles. Then, using BCFW recursion relation, we determine the tree-level amplitudes. To calculate the loop amplitude, we apply the unitarity of Smatrix. The unitarity relates the tree-level amplitudes to loop level. Finally, I discuss some exciting topics in this field, including color-kinematics duality, some relevant applications of contemporary S-matrix theory in effective field theories

Investigation of Dissipation Effects in Quantum Emission and Problem of Classical Noise in Decoherence Process

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Seifi, Mina (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recent studies suggest that the selectivity filter may exhibit quantum coherence, which could play a role in explaining the processes of ion selection and conduction. As the ion channel system interacts with its environment, it undergoes a decoherence process. In this thesis, the relationship between jump rates and coherence preservation in ion channels is examined initially. To this end, using the Lindblad master equation to describe a three-level system, results are analyzed in different quantum regimes. To directly study coherence in the system, distillable coherence was used as a coherence measure, and the second-order coherence function was calculated. As expected, distillable coherence...

    Abstract
There have been many applications for machine learning algorithms in different fields. The importance of hyperparameters for machine learning algorithms is their control over the behaviors of training algorithms and their crucial impact on the performance of machine learning models. Tuning hyperparameters crucially affects the performance of machine learning algorithms, and future advances in this area mainly depend on well-tuned hyperparameters. Nevertheless, the high computational cost involved in evaluating the algorithms in large datasets or complicated models is a significant limitation that causes inefficiency of the tuning process. Besides, increased online applications of machine...

Detection of Change in Nonlinear Profiles using Kriging and Comparison with Self Organizing Clustering Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seifi Shishavan, Hadi (Author) ; Mahlooji, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Control Charts are the most popular monitoring tools for profiles. The time that a control chart gives an out-of-control signal is not the real time of change. The actual time of change is called the change point. This study suggests two new algorithms to find the change (shift) in parameters of nonlinear profiles. First, using ordinary Kriging method, new points are estimated. Then, with the help of Bernoulli hypothesis test, the probability of detecting the change for new points is tested. Nonlinear profiles in this study follow the exponential family of distributions; in particular, Exponential, Poison and Gaussian distribution structures are used as nonlinear profiles. The proposed...

A Robust Simulation Optimization Algorithm using Bayesian Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Seifi, Farshad (Author) ; Akhavan Niaki, Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Huge availability of data in last decade has raised the opportunity to use data for decision making. The idea of using existing data to achieve more coherent reality solution has led to a branch of optimization called data-driven optimization. Presence of uncertain variables makes it crucial to design robust optimization methods for this area. On the other hand, in many real-world problems, the closed-form of the objective function is not available and a meta-model based framework is necessary. Motivated by this, we are using a Gaussian process in a Bayesian optimization framework to design a method that is consistent with the data in predefined confidence level. The goodness of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fotouhi, Amin (Author) ; Khorasheh, Fahad (Supervisor) ; Sadighi, Sepehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The harmful environmental effects of gases resulting from the combustion of sulfur compounds in fuel, poisoning of catalysts, corrosion of equipment, as well as the intensification of environmental considerations and new standards adopted for the maximum amount of sulfur, have made the desulfurization of fuels important; Meanwhile, the desulfurization method using hydrogen has a high potential to remove sulfur compounds. For example, diesel fuel contains a variety of impurities such as sulfur, nitrogen (basic and Non-basic), and aromatic compounds, the sulfur in diesel fuel causes many problems related to environmental pollution and corrosion of engine components. Also, due to the high...

    Abstract
A heuristic approach is proposed to solve a real Periodic Vehicle Routing Problem (PVRP) that aims at extending the market share with the minimum transportation cost. In PVRP, vehicles are assigned to routes in different workdays to satisfy the frequency of visiting customers. The objective is to determine the scheduling and routing policies of the vehicles to minimise the fleet size and to maximise the selling benefits. The vehicle capacity and the trip time are the main constraints. The proposed approach is verified by real data and obtained results imply a significant improvement as compared to the current status
