, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Pourpouneh Najafabadi, Mohsen (Author) ; Daneshagr, Amir (Supervisor) ; Ramezanian, Rasoul (Supervisor) ; Sen, Arunava (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Matching theory plays an important role in analyzing economic behavior in social networks. The matching theory has application in marriage problems, kidney exchange, allocating workers to firms and etc. The main problem in matching theory is to design a mechanism such that it results in maximizing the welfare and it is incentive compatible, to tell the truth for each individual. In this thesis, we introduce a measure for comparing any two matchings and we investigate two matchings mechanisms under certain domains

    Abstract
At present, nanoparticles are used for various biomedical applications where they facilitate laboratory diagnostics and therapeutics. More specifically for drug delivery purposes, the use of nanoparticles is attracting increasing attention due to their unique capabilities and their negligible side effects not only in cancer therapy but also in the treatment of other ailments. Among all types of nanoparticles, biocompatible superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with proper surface architecture and conjugated targeting ligands/proteins have attracted a great deal of attention for drug delivery applications. This review covers recent advances in the development of SPIONs together...

Information theory of mixed population genome-wide association studies

    Abstract
Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) addresses the problem of associating subsequences of individuals' genomes to the observable characteristics called phenotypes. In a genome of length G, it is observed that each characteristic is only related to a specific subsequence of it with length L, called the causal subsequence. The objective is to recover the causal subsequence, using a dataset of N individuals' genomes and their observed characteristics. Recently, the problem has been investigated from an information theoretic point of view in [1]. It has been shown that there is a threshold effect for reliable learning of the causal subsequence at Gh ( N L/G ) by characterizing the capacity of...

Comparing the nature of quantum plasmonic excitations for closely spaced silver and gold dimers

    Abstract
In the new field of quantum plasmonics, plasmonic excitations of silver and gold nanoparticles are utilized to manipulate and control light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. While quantum plasmons can be described with atomistic detail using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (DFT), such studies are computationally challenging due to the size of the nanoparticles. An efficient alternative is to employ DFT without approximations only for the relatively fast ground state calculations and use tight-binding approximations in the demanding linear response calculations. In this work, we use this approach to investigate the nature of plasmonic excitations under the variation of the...

A novel joint routing and power management algorithm for energy-constraint Ad-hoc Sensor Network

    Abstract
In this paper a combination of routing and power management within the context of wireless Ad-hoc Sensor Networks is considered. Using lower layer information (e.g. collision that is considered in MAC layer) is another novel concern which is used in routing decisions. More specifically in this paper we introduce a cross-layer design in which each node dynamically chooses the number of its neighbors and adjusts its power just enough to reach its farthest determined neighbor. In this algorithm the power of transmission and collision are used as metrics for routing and the number of neighbors in which the total energy consumption in data transmission will be the minimum is selected. © 2005 IEEE...

    Abstract
A readout box prototype for the CMS Hadron Forward calorimeter upgrade was built and tested in the CERN H2 beamline. The prototype was designed to enable simultaneous tests of different readout options for the four anode upgrade PMTs, new front-end electronics design and new cabling. The response of the PMTs with different readout options was uniform and the background response was minimal. Multi-channel readout options further enhanced the background elimination. Passing all the electronic, mechanical and physics tests, the readout box proved to be capable of providing the forward hadron calorimeter operational requirements in the upgrade era
